As the scope for cyber breaches continues to expand with the increase in encrypted web traffic volume and supply chain attacks, security professionals in India will spend more on tools that use Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to fight malware attacks, said a Cisco report on Wednesday. Applying these tools can help enhance network security defences and, over time, "learn" how to automatically detect unusual patterns in encrypted web traffic, Cloud and Internet of Things (IoT) environments. The "Cisco 2018 Annual Cybersecurity Report" showed that more than half of the organisations surveyed in India are reliant on automation, ML and AI. "Attackers are exploiting undefended gaps in security, many caused by the expanding Internet of Things (IoT) and use of Cloud services. Defenders often pay scant attention to the security of these systems. Unpatched and unmonitored IoT devices present attackers with opportunities to infiltrate networks," Vishak Raman, Director, Security Business, Cisco India & Saarc, told IANS.

Artificial intelligence (AI), to use a hackneyed term, is already causing a paradigm shift for marketers. AI, in brief, is helping brands to rapidly collaborate with and learn from online followers. And while there probably exists many a Luddite that deems AI a pervasive jobs threat, the flip side is that it may be a golden opportunity to let the machines do mundane stuff like customer support, enabling humans to become more creative. The issue, of course, is that data is everywhere these days. But the underlying problem, noted Tara Thomas, a content writer for Boomtrain, a market technology firm that provides AI solutions to companies/organizations, is that large chunks of data don't make things easier – "in fact, they can make things so complicated that the first instinct is to abandon the data and go by intuition alone – but this won't give you the right results."

According to tests conducted by Carnegie Mellon University researchers, so-termed conversational agents -- like the ubiquitous Siri, Alexa and Cortana -- are effective at giving users the latest weather or map locations. However, these early forms of'artificial intelligence' are invariably ineffective when asked for atypical information or when follow-up questions are pitched. These limitations can be overcome, the researchers contend, by adding humans to the loop. Through innovative human/machine hybrid research, the scientists created a new form of conversational agent called Evorus. This is presented by the developers as the first chatbot to use human brainpower to answer a broad range of questions.
