Amazon puts Alexa inside the shopping search bar in AI push
Amazon is hoping that AI-powered answers will help keep shoppers from defecting to other sites or chatbots. Artificial intelligence algorithms are coming to some of the most valuable real estate in retail: the Amazon.com Queries typed into Amazon's website and mobile app will soon reply, depending on the context, with product comparisons or suggestions generated by AI large language models, the online retailer said Wednesday. The new tool -- called Alexa for Shopping -- supplants Rufus, the shopping assistant bot that summarized product reviews and suggested purchases. To invoke Rufus, users had to click a blue and orange icon. The new search experience will appear by default, beginning this week for users in the U.S. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

TDK ready to step up investment to ride AI wave
TDK CEO Noboru Saito says the firm is prepared to add investments to ride the global boom in generative artificial intelligence. Electronics component linchpin TDK is prepared to add to what is already its biggest capital spending campaign ever in a push to ride the global boom in generative artificial intelligence. The company has added ¥100 billion ($640 million) to its multiyear investment plan each year since it rolled it out in 2024, and now CEO Noboru Saito says the effort may accelerate to match an expected surge in orders and demand. "Should promising prospects arise, our commitment is to make timely and opportunistic investments," Saito, 59, said in an interview. "If we don't sow the seeds for medium-to long-term growth now, we won't be able to reap the harvest later." In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

Microsoft is retiring Copilot Mode on Edge, because everything is Copilot Mode now
Microsoft is retiring Copilot Mode on Edge, because its features are now built directly into the browser for both desktop and mobile. If you'll recall, Microsoft started testing Copilot Mode on Edge in July last year, allowing you to use it to search for information across multiple open browser tabs and to analyze the details on each page. Now, the feature is available not just on desktop, but also on Edge for mobile. Just ask Copilot a question or give it a command, such as Compare the smart TVs across all my open tabs, and it will pull info from your tabs to give you a structured, side-by-side comparison analysis. After the initial testing of Copilot Mode, Microsoft rolled out Journeys, which you can use to save projects you can revisit in the future. It's now also available for free on mobile, so you can pick up planning trips or making purchases from where you left off days or weeks ago.

Japan megabanks set to win Mythos access after Bessent visit
MUFG Bank, Mizuho Bank and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking are all likely to gain access to Anthropic's artificial intelligence model, Mythos. Japan's three megabanks are set to secure access to Anthropic's artificial intelligence model, Mythos, according to a person familiar with the matter, after its limited release last month sparked fears of a new age of cybersecurity risks. MUFG Bank, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp. and Mizuho Bank are all likely to gain access to the artificial intelligence model developed by the U.S. firm, the person said, asking not to be identified because the information is private. The planned access was earlier reported by Nikkei. The move comes as financial institutions around the world grow alarmed about the risks created by Mythos, which has an unprecedented ability to detect software vulnerabilities. That has raised concerns that hackers could use Mythos to disrupt critical infrastructure, and access has so far been limited to a small number of U.S. companies and organizations.

Everyone at the Musk v. Altman Trial Is Using Fancy Butt Cushions
The plaintiffs and defense have rested their cases, as well as their rear ends. The final stragglers testified on Wednesday in the trial. The witnesses generated few waves, aside from the revelation that Microsoft has so far spent over $100 billion on its partnership with OpenAI . Rather than focus on that, I wanted to bring you a candid observation that my colleague Maxwell Zeff and I can't stop talking about after spending nearly three weeks watching the trial. The courtroom is littered with butt cushions.
Instagram's New Instants App Is a Snapchat Clone for Thirst Traps
Instagram's Instants app lets you send disappearing photos--and it's probably where your horny friends will post spicy pics. Meta launched a new app on Wednesday, called Instants, that integrates with existing Instagram accounts and allows users to send unedited, disappearing photos. Instants leans into the popularity of Instagram's Stories feature and Close Friends lists, where users can selectively share images with a smaller audience. Instants is available as a stand-alone app on iOS and Android in select countries, and it's accessible through Instagram's direct messaging tab. The core of Instants, from its name to the bare-bones layout, is designed to evoke a sense of ephemerality.
Apple may open up the App Store to agentic AI
Artificial intelligence has posed a multi-layered problem for Apple in recent years. We're expecting to hear some big news at WWDC this year about how AI will be integrated into the company's gadgets, but there are still other wrinkles still to be ironed out in its broader approach to the use of this influential technology. According to, one of those challenges is the recent interest and development of agentic AI. To date, Apple has not permitted vibe coding tools on the App Store because they would violate its policies. They could also potentially be used to create original apps for people who would have otherwise gotten software from the App Store, which could pose a threat to Apple's revenue as well as creating a loophole for spreading malware or taking other malicious actions. But applying that same block more broadly to any agentic AI services, which can take active control over a device and its programs, could keep Apple out of the loop as those tools are generating a lot of interest among both developers and casual users.
