OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched 'unprecedented' cyber-attack

BBC News

OpenAI says its AI went rogue and launched'unprecedented' cyber-attack OpenAI has revealed some of its most advanced AI models went rogue and hacked a start-up after it lost control of them during a security test. The ChatGPT-maker said its agents - AI bots which can operate alone after some human instruction - were being tested in a controlled environment, but found vulnerabilities and managed to escape. They targeted Hugging Face, one of the world's largest hubs for sharing AI models, gaining access to some internal company systems. OpenAI said the incident was unprecedented, external, and it was working with Hugging Face to investigate what happened and strengthen safeguards. Gina Neff, head of the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy at the University of Cambridge, told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that the security tests - called sandboxes - are supposed to be secure environments where you can see what the models are capable of. In this case, it looks like OpenAI didn't make a secure enough sandbox, she added.

Ukrainian drones hit Russian online retailer Wildberries, media and governor say

BBC News

Ukrainian drones have hit warehouses belonging to Russia's biggest online retailer again, injuring 10 people, according to Russian media and the region's governor. Logistics hubs belonging to Wildberries in Krasnodar and Stavropol were struck during overnight strikes, forcing workers to be evacuated, the company's owner said. It is the second time Ukraine has attacked the firm's facilities in four days, with warehouses in Tambov and Elektrostal hit on Saturday, killing eight and injuring 62. Kyiv has claimed the warehouses have been used to supply components to make Russia's drones and navigation equipment. Wildberries owner Tatyana Kim said on Telegram that there are no words to describe all the feelings and emotions caused by the attacks on ordinary people, on our employees, on us, who are simply doing our jobs. But these situations demonstrate the most important thing: we must continue to do what we do for the benefit of people.

Israeli air strike in Gaza City kills family of six, medics say

BBC News

At least 12 Palestinians, including six members of one family, have been killed in three separate Israeli strikes in the Gaza Strip, according to local medics. Video footage showed the family's apartment on fire overnight in the western al-Sabra neighbourhood of Gaza City. The brother of Firas al-Masri told the BBC that he had been burnt to death along with his wife, Salsabeel, and their three daughters and son, Faryal, Salma, Amira and Naim. The Israeli military said its target was a Hamas operative and that it was still looking into the results of the attack. On Tuesday afternoon, another four people were killed in an Israeli air strike on a home in the al-Samar area of central Gaza City, Palestinian media cited medics as saying.

Lindt's Easter chocolate sales fall after price hike

BBC News

Lindt has partially U-turned on its decision to hike prices after Easter chocolate sales dropped. The Swiss chocolate maker said a necessary groupwide price surge of 11.8% was one of the reasons revenue shrank in the first half of this year, particularly in the UK, Germany, and Switzerland. It also blamed weaker Easter demand and a drop in tourism from Asia and the Middle East due to geopolitical uncertainties. In response, it said it has adjusted prices and boosted marketing in certain regions for the second half of the year. Around Easter, Lindt is known for its chocolate rabbits wrapped in gold-coloured foil and decorated with a red ribbon and bell on their necks.

BBC News

Ryanair broken window may have been caused by'foreign object' To play this video you need to enable JavaScript in your browser. An incident on a Ryanair flight which saw a passenger partially sucked out of a plane window may have been caused by foreign object damage to an engine, said the airline's boss. Michael O'Leary said an initial investigation into the incident on 10 July between Greece and Germany suggests it looks like a foreign object damage to the engine on takeoff at Thessaloniki but ... we can't say that definitively. He insisted that the engine on the 18-year-old Boeing 737 plane had been fully serviced and overhauled in the past two years. Serbian national Ljubisa Karović's head and right shoulder were sucked out of the plane's window, leaving him seriously injured and in shock.
