AI researcher says 'world is in peril' and quits to study poetry

BBC News

AI researcher says'world is in peril' and quits to study poetry An AI safety researcher has quit US firm Anthropic with a cryptic warning that the world is in peril. In his resignation letter shared on X, Mrinank Sharma told the firm he was leaving amid concerns about AI, bioweapons and the state of the wider world. He said he would instead look to pursue writing and studying poetry, and move back to the UK to become invisible. It comes in the same week that a OpenAI researcher said she had resigned, sharing concerns about the ChatGPT maker's decision to deploy adverts in its chatbot . Anthropic, best known for its Claude chatbot, had released a series of commercials aimed at OpenAI, criticising the company's move to include adverts for some users.

Disney advert banned for showing 'disturbing' severed body

BBC News

Disney advert banned for showing'disturbing' severed body A menacing Disney advert featuring a severed body has been banned by the advertising regulator, which said it was likely to frighten and cause distress to children. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) found the entertainment giant had broken its rules with its advert for the Predator Badlands film. Parents complained that the digital poster, which featured a large alien holding aloft the severed body of a smaller, human figure, was inappropriate and disturbing for young children. Disney said the severed body was actually that of a robot, and the fact it had been cut in two further emphasised its non-human nature. The advert, which was seen on the roadside in Giffnock, Glasgow, was promoting the Disney sci-fi film ahead of its release in November.

Celebrity appearances, controversial ads and other Super Bowl takeaways

BBC News

Latin megastar Bad Bunny performed a medley of his top hits at the Super Bowl on Sunday in a star-studded show that was criticised as terrible by the US president. The Puerto Rican singer, also known as Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, was joined on stage by a host of fellow music stars including Lady Gaga, Ricky Martin and Cardi B. Sitting in the stands, Kim Kardashian and Lewis Hamilton made their first major public appearance together, after weeks of speculation about their romance. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion and the reality TV star were spotted chatting and smiling together during the game, and were caught on video by NBC News. Fellow musical superstars Lady Gaga, Cardi B and Jessica Alba joined the dancers on stage alongside Bad Bunny, who was the world's most-played artist in 2025 on Spotify, according to the streaming service. Chilean-American actor Pedro Pascal and Puerto Rican singer Ricky Martin also joined the performance, which was populated by a largely pan-American crowd of celebrities.

McDonald's pulls AI Christmas ad after backlash

BBC News

McDonald's pulls AI Christmas ad after backlash McDonald's has taken down a Christmas advert made with Artificial Intelligence (AI) following online backlash. The 45-second advert was produced with generative AI clips and released publicly on McDonald's Netherlands YouTube channel on 6 December. Viewers on social media denounced the use of AI in the film, with one commenter calling it the most god-awful ad I've seen this year . On 9 December McDonald's Netherlands removed the video, adding in a statement to BBC News that the moment served as an important learning as the company explored the effective use of AI. The advert was created for McDonald's by Dutch company TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop.

Nike, Superdry and Lacoste ads banned over misleading green claims

BBC News

Adverts for Nike, Superdry and Lacoste have been banned for making misleading claims about their green credentials. The UK's advertising watchdog challenged the brands over the use of the word sustainable in paid-for Google ads which were not backed up by evidence of their sustainability. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) identified three adverts from the retailers promising customers sustainable materials, sustainable style and sustainable clothing. The UK's advertising code states that the basis of claims about environmental sustainability must be clear and supported by a high level of substantiation. In each case, it asked the companies for evidence to back up the claims about the sustainability of the products.

Fashion house Valentino criticised over 'disturbing' AI handbag ads

BBC News

Italian luxury fashion house Valentino is facing criticism after posting disturbing adverts made using artificial intelligence (AI) for one of its luxury handbags online. The brand announced a collaboration with digital artists as part of what it dubbed a digital creative project promoting its new DeVain handbag. But an AI-generated advert it posted on Instagram has been met with intense criticism from fans, who called the visuals - and use of AI - sloppy and sad. The BBC has approached Valentino for comment. The Instagram post promoting the handbag, which has a label to say it was made using AI, shows a surreal collage of models spliced between Valentino logos and its DeVain bag.

Hotel adverts banned over misleadingly cheap rooms

BBC News

Adverts by four of Britain's biggest hotel and travel firms have been banned for stating misleading minimum prices for rooms. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) upheld complaints against the Hilton hotel group, Travelodge, Booking.com and Accor over their use of eye-catching so-called from prices. The watchdog found only a small number of rooms actually available to book at the promoted price and concluded the adverts overstated the deals. It said this was unfair on those looking for good deals or seeking to make informed choices about where to book. ASA operations manager Emily Henwood said: Advertised prices must match what's really available.

Armed police in US handcuff teen after AI mistakes crisp packet for gun

BBC News

A US teenager was handcuffed by armed police after an artificial intelligence (AI) system mistakenly said he was carrying a gun - when really he was holding a packet of crisps. Police showed up, like eight cop cars, and then they all came out with guns pointed at me talking about getting on the ground, 16-year-old Baltimore pupil Taki Allen told local outlet WMAR-2 News . Baltimore County Police Department said their officers responded appropriately and proportionally based on the information provided at the time. It said the AI alert was sent to human reviewers who found no threat - but the principal missed this and contacted the school's safety team, who ultimately called the police. But the incident has prompted calls by some for the schools' procedures around the use of such technology to be reviewed.

David Gandy: 'Britain produces some of the greatest models. We want to keep it that way'

BBC News

David Gandy: 'Britain produces some of the greatest models. We want to keep it that way' The Essex-born supermodel is sitting in his light-filled kitchen, sipping a glass of water and reflecting on his almost 25-year career. At 45, Gandy's striking dark brown hair, sharp cheekbones and piercing blue eyes have been at the centre of some of fashion's most iconic campaigns of the last two decades, and he is one of the few male models to become a household name. I always say that I was inspired by the female supermodels, Gandy says, name-checking Cindy Crawford, Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell. You don't even need to say the surnames.
