Artificial intelligence technology is reaching all realms of society, from shopping and health care to transportation and farming. In the past two years, nearly 30 innovative applications of the algorithm sciences have been rolled out, and the number of companies attracted to Shanghai's high profile in the sector is increasing. The city is home to some 1,116 companies involved in artificial intelligence work. Last year, that sector was valued at 147.7 billion yuan (US$21 billion). A robotic assistant has been installed for six months at the inpatient wards at the Pediatric Respiratory Department of Shanghai Children's Medical Center.
