Tactical Game-theoretic Decision-making with Homotopy Class Constraints

We propose a tactical homotopy-aware decision-making framework for game-theoretic motion planning in urban environments. We model urban driving as a generalized Nash equilibrium problem and employ a mixed-integer approach to tame the combinatorial aspect of motion planning. More specifically, by utilizing homotopy classes, we partition the high-dimensional solution space into finite, well-defined subregions. Each subregion (homotopy) corresponds to a high-level tactical decision, such as the passing order between pairs of players. The proposed formulation allows to find global optimal Nash equilibria in a computationally tractable manner by solving a mixed-integer quadratic program. Each homotopy decision is represented by a binary variable that activates different sets of linear collision avoidance constraints. This extra homotopic constraint allows to find solutions in a more efficient way (on a roundabout scenario on average 5-times faster). We experimentally validate the proposed approach on scenarios taken from the rounD dataset. Simulation-based testing in receding horizon fashion demonstrates the capability of the framework in achieving globally optimal solutions while yielding a 78% average decrease in the computational time with respect to an implementation without the homotopic constraints.


Under-Canopy Navigation using Aerial Lidar Maps

Autonomous navigation in unstructured natural environments poses a significant challenge. In goal navigation tasks without prior information, the limited look-ahead of onboard sensors utilised by robots compromises path efficiency. We propose a novel approach that leverages an above-the-canopy aerial map for improved ground robot navigation. Our system utilises aerial lidar scans to create a 3D probabilistic occupancy map, uniquely incorporating the uncertainty in the aerial vehicle's trajectory for improved accuracy. Novel path planning cost functions are introduced, combining path length with obstruction risk estimated from the probabilistic map. The D-Star Lite algorithm then calculates an optimal (minimum-cost) path to the goal. This system also allows for dynamic replanning upon encountering unforeseen obstacles on the ground. Extensive experiments and ablation studies in simulated and real forests demonstrate the effectiveness of our system.


Online Pareto-Optimal Decision-Making for Complex Tasks using Active Inference

When a robot autonomously performs a complex task, it frequently must balance competing objectives while maintaining safety. This becomes more difficult in uncertain environments with stochastic outcomes. Enhancing transparency in the robot's behavior and aligning with user preferences are also crucial. This paper introduces a novel framework for multi-objective reinforcement learning that ensures safe task execution, optimizes trade-offs between objectives, and adheres to user preferences. The framework has two main layers: a multi-objective task planner and a high-level selector. The planning layer generates a set of optimal trade-off plans that guarantee satisfaction of a temporal logic task. The selector uses active inference to decide which generated plan best complies with user preferences and aids learning. Operating iteratively, the framework updates a parameterized learning model based on collected data. Case studies and benchmarks on both manipulation and mobile robots show that our framework outperforms other methods and (i) learns multiple optimal trade-offs, (ii) adheres to a user preference, and (iii) allows the user to adjust the balance between (i) and (ii).


Search-based versus Sampling-based Robot Motion Planning: A Comparative Study

Robot motion planning is a challenging domain as it involves dealing with high-dimensional and continuous search space. In past decades, a wide variety of planning algorithms have been developed to tackle this problem, sometimes in isolation without comparing to each other. In this study, we benchmark two such prominent types of algorithms: OMPL's sampling-based RRT-Connect and SMPL's search-based ARA* with motion primitives. To compare these two fundamentally different approaches fairly, we adapt them to ensure the same planning conditions and benchmark them on the same set of planning scenarios. Our findings suggest that sampling-based planners like RRT-Connect show more consistent performance across the board in high-dimensional spaces, whereas search-based planners like ARA* have the capacity to perform significantly better when used with a suitable action-space sampling scheme. Through this study, we hope to showcase the effort required to properly benchmark motion planners from different paradigms thereby contributing to a more nuanced understanding of their capabilities and limitations. Mixed Strategy Nash Equilibrium for Crowd Navigation

Robots navigating in crowded areas should negotiate free space with humans rather than fully controlling collision avoidance, as this can lead to freezing behavior. Game theory provides a framework for the robot to reason about potential cooperation from humans for collision avoidance during path planning. In particular, the mixed strategy Nash equilibrium captures the negotiation behavior under uncertainty, making it well suited for crowd navigation. However, computing the mixed strategy Nash equilibrium is often prohibitively expensive for real-time decision-making. In this paper, we propose an iterative Bayesian update scheme over probability distributions of trajectories. The algorithm simultaneously generates a stochastic plan for the robot and probabilistic predictions of other pedestrians' paths. We prove that the proposed algorithm is equivalent to solving a mixed strategy game for crowd navigation, and the algorithm guarantees the recovery of the global Nash equilibrium of the game. We name our algorithm Bayes' Rule Nash Equilibrium (BRNE) and develop a real-time model prediction crowd navigation framework. Since BRNE is not solving a general-purpose mixed strategy Nash equilibrium but a tailored formula specifically for crowd navigation, it can compute the solution in real-time on a low-power embedded computer. We evaluate BRNE in both simulated environments and real-world pedestrian datasets. BRNE consistently outperforms non-learning and learning-based methods regarding safety and navigation efficiency. It also reaches human-level crowd navigation performance in the pedestrian dataset benchmark. Lastly, we demonstrate the practicality of our algorithm with real humans on an untethered quadruped robot with fully onboard perception and computation.


TRIP-PAL: Travel Planning with Guarantees by Combining Large Language Models and Automated Planners

Travel planning is a complex task that involves generating a sequence of actions related to visiting places subject to constraints and maximizing some user satisfaction criteria. Traditional approaches rely on problem formulation in a given formal language, extracting relevant travel information from web sources, and use an adequate problem solver to generate a valid solution. As an alternative, recent Large Language Model (LLM) based approaches directly output plans from user requests using language. Although LLMs possess extensive travel domain knowledge and provide high-level information like points of interest and potential routes, current state-of-the-art models often generate plans that lack coherence, fail to satisfy constraints fully, and do not guarantee the generation of high-quality solutions. We propose TRIP-PAL, a hybrid method that combines the strengths of LLMs and automated planners, where (i) LLMs get and translate travel information and user information into data structures that can be fed into planners; and (ii) automated planners generate travel plans that guarantee constraint satisfaction and optimize for users' utility. Our experiments across various travel scenarios show that TRIP-PAL outperforms an LLM when generating travel plans.


A Semi-Lagrangian Approach for Time and Energy Path Planning Optimization in Static Flow Fields

In this context, new challenges arise when robotic systems address not just a singular objective but multiple and often conflicting goals. These objectives can range from minimizing travel time and energy consumption simultaneously to optimizing factors like safety and resource allocation [2]. In single-objective approaches, the most commonly prioritized factors are typically the path's length [3, 4] and travel time [5, 6]. However, by incorporating other additional attributes, such as path safety/vulnerability and smoothness [7, 8], we can significantly improve both the quality and the applicability of results. Regarding the more general class of routing problems, where a sequence of visits is demanded, a multi-objective variant of the Orienteering Problem (OP) was proposed in [9], where the goal was to maximize the cumulative reward obtained while concurrently minimizing the exposure to sensors deployed in the environment. Furthermore, it is also imperative to acknowledge that, in numerous domains, environmental dynamics substantially influence the trajectories and behaviors of the vehicles. This is particularly evident in fields such as aerospace, where factors like air density, wind patterns, and gravitational forces intricately shape the aircraft flight paths [10].


MINER-RRT*: A Hierarchical and Fast Trajectory Planning Framework in 3D Cluttered Environments

Trajectory planning for quadrotors in cluttered environments has been challenging in recent years. While many trajectory planning frameworks have been successful, there still exists potential for improvements, particularly in enhancing the speed of generating efficient trajectories. In this paper, we present a novel hierarchical trajectory planning framework to reduce computational time and memory usage called MINER-RRT*, which consists of two main components. First, we propose a sampling-based path planning method boosted by neural networks, where the predicted heuristic region accelerates the convergence of rapidly-exploring random trees. Second, we utilize the optimal conditions derived from the quadrotor's differential flatness properties to construct polynomial trajectories that minimize control effort in multiple stages. Extensive simulation and real-world experimental results demonstrate that, compared to several state-of-the-art (SOTA) approaches, our method can generate high-quality trajectories with better performance in 3D cluttered environments.


Temporal Planning via Interval Logic Satisfiability for Autonomous Systems

Many automated planning methods and formulations rely on suitably designed abstractions or simplifications of the constrained dynamics associated with agents to attain computational scalability. We consider formulations of temporal planning where intervals are associated with both action and fluent atoms, and relations between these are given as sentences in Allen's Interval Logic. We propose a notion of planning graphs that can account for complex concurrency relations between actions and fluents as a Constraint Programming (CP) model. We test an implementation of our algorithm on a state-of-the-art framework for CP and compare it with PDDL 2.1 planners that capture plans requiring complex concurrent interactions between agents. We demonstrate our algorithm outperforms existing PDDL 2.1 planners in the case studies. Still, scalability remains challenging when plans must comply with intricate concurrent interactions and the sequencing of actions.


Trajectory Planning for Autonomous Driving in Unstructured Scenarios Based on Graph Neural Network and Numerical Optimization

In unstructured environments, obstacles are diverse and lack lane markings, making trajectory planning for intelligent vehicles a challenging task. Traditional trajectory planning methods typically involve multiple stages, including path planning, speed planning, and trajectory optimization. These methods require the manual design of numerous parameters for each stage, resulting in significant workload and computational burden. While end-to-end trajectory planning methods are simple and efficient, they often fail to ensure that the trajectory meets vehicle dynamics and obstacle avoidance constraints in unstructured scenarios. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel trajectory planning method based on Graph Neural Networks (GNN) and numerical optimization. The proposed method consists of two stages: (1) initial trajectory prediction using the GNN, (2) trajectory optimization using numerical optimization. First, the graph neural network processes the environment information and predicts a rough trajectory, replacing traditional path and speed planning. This predicted trajectory serves as the initial solution for the numerical optimization stage, which optimizes the trajectory to ensure compliance with vehicle dynamics and obstacle avoidance constraints. We conducted simulation experiments to validate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm and compared it with other mainstream planning algorithms. The results demonstrate that the proposed method simplifies the trajectory planning process and significantly improves planning efficiency.
