Should 'catfishing' be made illegal?

BBC News

Anna Rowe had a whirlwind romance with Antony Ray after meeting him through the dating app Tinder. But their 14-month relationship came crashing down when she discovered his profile was a fake. In fact, he was a married dad who had initially used photos of a Bollywood actor on his profile and had lured in other women too. "He used me like a hotel with benefits under the disguise of a romantic, loving relationship that he knew I craved," says Anna. The practice of using a fake profile to start an online romance is known as "catfishing".

Google Just Discovered A Massive Web Leak... And You Might Want To Change All Your Passwords

Forbes - Tech

The CloudBleed bug could have leaked secrets from major web companies, like Uber and OKCupid, Google researchers claim. A Google researcher has uncovered what may be the most worrying web leak of 2017 so far, possibly exposing passwords, private messages and other sensitive data from a vast number of sites, including major services like Uber, FitBit and OKCupid. It's being dubbed CloudLeak by some, as the problem was caused by a vulnerability in code from a hugely popular web company, CloudFlare, and was not dissimilar to the infamous Heartbleed bug of 2015 (though possibly more severe in terms of the potential for data leakage). It's similar to Heartbleed in that CloudFlare, which hosts and serves content for a at least 2 million websites, was returning random chunks of memory from vulnerable servers when requests came in. Making the issue even more severe was the fact that search engines were caching that leaked information.

Microsoft's Cortana, Apple's Siri and Amazon's Alexa are among a growing army of intelligent assistants raising a cacophony of questions (all in Natural Language, of course) about man versus machine in the pursuit of a flawless customer experience. At this year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES), 2017 was heralded to be "the year of voice recognition". The advent of Deep Learning has dramatically enhanced language technologies and, while there remains considerable progress to be made, Voice Recognition technology is already making audible waves in the insurance industry. Faceless computing Two key stories have ushered this "era of so-called faceless computing" into the insurance arena. In early January, Fukoku Mutual Life decided to make thirty-four employees redundant in favour of artificial intelligence.

Fintech and AI: Kasisto introduces financial chatbots

#artificialintelligence

The fintech sector is looking at Artificial Intelligence with increasing interest. Indeed, Financial Technology has been growing exponentially: there are about 4,000 startups in the space (a conservative estimate, actually) and fintech's value has grown from $930 million in 2008 to $12 billion in 2014. Furthermore, proof of that AI has started integrating with finance and e-banking systems has come from a piece of news which has been missed by the general public. I'm talking about a statement released by Kasisto concerning the release of chatbots dedicated to stock investments and which can be integrated with common digital tools. Kasisto is an American startup, established as a spin-off of SRI International, the research Institute founded by the Stanford University which created Siri, the digital assistant used by Apple.

Peanut: The woman who shook up dating with Bumble launches app to connect lonely and isolated mothers

The Independent - Tech

When Michelle Kennedy had her first baby, she realised that nothing is capable of preparing you for the numbing isolation and loneliness that motherhood can entail. Integral to the launch of the highly successful dating app Bumble and a former executive of the European social networking site Badoo, Ms Kennedy said that she felt that modern parenting involved a new language that she didn't speak. So in the spirit of a true entrepreneur, she decided to transform her frustration into an opportunity. Ms Kennedy created a brand new app called Peanut, which aims to break the stigma around motherhood and help women--just like herself--to make meaningful connections based on common values and interests during this new--often scary and almost always transformative--phase of their lives. "There is still a stigma [about motherhood]on two levels," she told the Independent.

Apple Sets Up Seattle Hub To Work On AI, Machine Learning; Improved Siri In The Works?

International Business Times

Apple is setting up engineering operations in Seattle to develop artificial intelligence applications for its range of devices including the iPhone, MacBooks, Apple Watch and iPads among others. Geekwire reported Thursday the company has invested in the venture to realize its "AI ambitions" and has setup a $1 million endowed professorship in artificial intelligence and machine learning at the University of Washington in accordance with its acquisition of Australian start-up Turi in August last year. "We're trying to find the best people who are excited about AI and machine learning -- excited about research and thinking long term but also bringing those ideas into products that impact and delight our customers," Carlos Guestrin, director of machine learning at Apple told Geekwire on Thursday. He also added: "We work on the whole spectrum. It's not just about doing research, but it's about the technology transfer and how that gets embedded into experiences that customers love."

Artificial Intelligence Tools That Will Transform Your B2B Marketing Operations

#artificialintelligence

When you think of artificial intelligence (AI), do you imagine Will Smith battling humanoid robots? Well, think again…did you know that AI is already being applied in the Internet, helping you go about your daily life without drawing attention to itself? Artificial intelligence simulates traditionally human processes like learning, reasoning and self-correction. Unlike traditional programs, AI-based applications don't need to be continually fed data or manually coded to make changes to their functionality and output. AI can be (and already is) immensely useful to B2B professionals in all industries. Most people tend to think of "strong" AI examples like IBM's Watson, but "weak" or "narrow" AI is more common and useful to our businesses and everyday lives.

iOS 11: 5 Expected Features Of Apple's Upcoming OS Update including Improved Siri, 3D Touch Integration And Kinect Functionality

International Business Times

Just like it does every year, Apple is expected to launch its next major iOS update at its World Wide Developers Conference event, which will be held in San Jose in June. According to previous rumors, the device will have an edge-to-edge display, a front camera with depth measurement functionality and support wireless charging. This milestone could be another reason that Apple could put out a new update, bringing major changes to the existing version of the operating system. Artificial Intelligence enabled Siri: Artificial intelligence (AI) enabled voice assistants seem to be the new fad in the smartphone industry. While Google's Assistant and Amazon's Alexa have made their way not just to smartphones, but even to smart devices, HTC has come out with its own Sense Companion and Samsung is developing Bixby.

Tinder May Incorporate Artificial Intelligence to Help You Get Some

#artificialintelligence

At the recent Startup Grind Global conference in California, Tinder CEO and Founder Sean Rad said the future of the popular dating app may involve artificial intelligence. And that future may come much sooner than anticipated. Rad said that in the next five years, Tinder's millions of global users may be able to ask Siri to find them dates, which would then prompt AI to track down possible matches nearby. "In five years time, Tinder might be so good, you might be like'Hey [Apple voice assistant] Siri, what's happening tonight?' And Tinder might pop up and say'There's someone down the street you might be attracted to. She's also attracted to you. We know you both like the same band, and it's playing - would you like us to buy you tickets?'… and you have a match."

Integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Mobile Apps

#artificialintelligence

Artificial Intelligence (AI) reminds us of many Hollywood movies, like The Terminator, The Matrix etc, in which machines surpass ability and smartness of human beings to perform incredible acts. With significant advancement in technology, it is now actually possible to empower a machine with AI by using a few programming techniques and database management system. But AI is no restricted to machines robotics only, and is now seen as the next frontier of mobile devices too. Cortana, Siri and Google Now have already shown us how AI can make a difference in digital world to make human lives better. They behave as personal assistants to advise and suggest a user, like reminding birthdays of loved ones, an important meeting, a major event and many more.
