Russia vows to repair planes damaged by Ukraine in massive drone attack, claims they were 'not destroyed'
Russia is vowing Thursday to repair the warplanes damaged by Ukraine in a massive drone attack earlier this week, with an official claiming they were "not destroyed but damaged." The comments from Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov come after Ukraine said its forces destroyed 40 of Russia's most powerful bomber jets and surveillance planes in "Operation Spider's Web," a series of coordinated drone strikes Sunday penetrating deep into Russian territory. "As the defense ministry said, these aircraft were not destroyed but damaged. They will be repaired," Ryabkov was quoted telling Russia's state-run TASS news agency. However, satellite images of Russian airfields show extensive damage to the planes.

Russian drone strike kills 5 as Moscow pledges response to Ukraine attacks
A Russian drone strike has killed five people in the northern town of Pryluky in Chernihiv region, including three members of one family, Ukrainian authorities said. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on Thursday morning that a local first responder's wife, daughter and one-year-old grandson were killed in the attack. Regional Governor Viacheslav Chaus said the family was among five people killed when Russia launched six drones to attack the town overnight. Six others were admitted to hospital, he said. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy slammed the attacks and accused Moscow of "constantly trying to buy time for itself to continue killing. "When it does not feel strong enough condemnation and pressure from the world – it kills again," he wrote on X. Zelenskyy said Russia launched 103 drones and one ballistic missile overnight targeting the Donetsk, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, Chernihiv, Dnipro and Kherson regions. "This is yet another reason to impose maximum sanctions and put pressure together.

Israel Launched Missiles as Well as Drones at Iran, Officials Say
Israeli warplanes fired missiles on Iran during a retaliatory strike early Friday morning, one Western official and two Iranian officials said, suggesting that the attack included more advanced firepower than initial reports indicated. It was not immediately clear the types of missiles used, from where they were fired, whether any were intercepted by Iran's defenses or where they landed. The Western official and the Iranian officials requested anonymity to discuss classified information. Previously, Iranian officials said Friday's attack on a military base in central Iran was conducted by small aerial drones, most likely launched from inside Iranian territory. A separate group of small drones, they said soon after the attack, was shot down in the region of Tabriz, roughly 500 miles north of Isfahan.

Russian fighter jet buzzes manned US warplane over Syria, threatening crew
U.S. Air Forces Central said Thursday that a Russian military fighter jet engaged with U.S. aircraft over Syria for 2nd consecutive day. The incident followed a previous clash on Wednesday. A Russian fighter jet flew dangerously close to a manned U.S. surveillance craft in the air over Syria, endangering the lives of all four American crew members, the U.S. military announced Monday. The Sunday flyby was the latest in a series of incidents in which Russian aircraft harassed American warplanes and drones in the air over Syria. A Russian SU-35v approached a U.S. MC-12 in a manner that could have resulted in a fatal accident, officials said.

US says it killed ISIL leader Osama al-Muhajer in drone strike
The United States military says it has killed a leader of the ISIL (ISIS) group in eastern Syria in a drone strike. The strike on Friday resulted in the death of Osama al-Muhajer, the US Central Command said in a statement on Sunday. "We have made it clear that we remain committed to the defeat of ISIS throughout the region," US Central Command (CENTCOM) chief General Michael Kurilla said, using another acronym for the ISIL armed group. "ISIS remains a threat, not only to the region but well beyond," he added. According to CENTCOM, no civilians were killed in the operation but coalition forces are "assessing reports of a civilian injury".

Russian fighter aircraft hold combat drills over Baltic Sea
Russia has started tactical fighter jet exercises over the Baltic Sea with the goal of testing readiness to perform combat and other special operations, the country's defence ministry has said, a day after Moscow said its jets had scrambled to intercept United Kingdom military planes over the Black Sea. "The main goal of the exercise is to test the readiness of the flight crew to perform combat and special tasks as intended," Russia's defence ministry said on Tuesday. "The crews of the Su-27 [fighter jets] of the Baltic Fleet fired from airborne weapons at cruise missiles and mock enemy aircraft," the ministry announced on the Telegram messaging channel, adding that as well as improving skills, Russian fighter pilots are on "round-the-clock combat duty" guarding the air space of Russia's Kaliningrad exclave. Wedged between Poland and Lithuania on the Baltic coast, Kaliningrad is Moscow's westernmost state and was part of Germany until the end of World War II. Given to the Soviet Union at the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the enclave has roughly 1 million residents – mainly Russians but also a small number of Ukrainians, Poles and Lithuanians.

Russia unveils new 'Checkmate' stealth fighter jet at air show
Fox News correspondent Lucas Tomlinson has the details from the Pentagon on'Special Report' Russian President Vladimir Putin inspected the country's newly unveiled "Checkmate" warplane on Tuesday. The prototype of the Sukhoi fifth-generation stealth fighter was revealed at the MAKS-2021 International Aviation and Space Salon, Reuters reported. The show opened Tuesday in Zhukovsky, outside Moscow. Fifth-generation refers to the jet's stealth characteristics, a capability to cruise at supersonic speed as well as artificial intelligence to assist the pilots, among other advanced features. "What we saw in Zhukovsky today demonstrates that the Russian aviation has a big potential for development and our aircraft making industries continue to create new competitive aircraft designs," Putin said in a speech at the show.

Turkey to be among pioneers of AI-controlled warplane: Erdoğan
Turkey aims to be among the first countries to have an entirely artificial intelligence (AI)-controlled unmanned warplane, with plans for it to take to the Turkish skies in 2023, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Wednesday. The success of Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) in the field has produced results that "require war strategies to be rewritten," the president said. Erdoğan was speaking at the ruling Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) parliamentary group meeting in the capital Ankara. The president added that currently a total of 180 Bayraktar TB2 unmanned combat aerial vehicles (UCAVs) are operated in four countries, including Turkey. Previously, Turkish drone magnate Baykar's Chief Technology Officer Selçuk Bayraktar said the maiden flight of the prototype of the country's domestically-made unmanned fighter jet is scheduled for 2023.

US Air Force to begin testing drone-zapping laser atop F-15 warplane
This summer, the US Air Force will begin testing a laser mounted on an F-15 warplane, an official said Monday. The Pentagon last year awarded a $26 million contract to Lockheed Martin for a laser program called SHiELD (Self-protect High Energy Laser Demonstrator.) The idea is to put a laser system on aircraft with an output of about 50 kilowatts to test their ability to zap drones or cruise missiles. Air Force scientists hope to have a laser that can defeat drones and missiles ready to put on an F-15 by summer 2019. 'We have got tests starting this summer and the flight tests next summer,' Jeff Stanley, deputy assistant secretary of the Air Force for science, technology and engineering, told reporters. 'There are still some technical challenges that we have to overcome, mainly size, weight, power.'
