GLAAD Media Awards nominates Paper Mario after Nintendo restored trans representation

Engadget

Ten video games have received nominations for the 36th Annual GLAAD Media Awards. This program celebrates media works that feature "fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and the issues that affect their lives." There are nominees for television, film, music, theater, journalism and comics as well as video games. One of the 2024 nominees for outstanding video game is the re-release of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door for the Nintendo Switch. The original Japanese version of the GameCube title included a minor character named Vivian who was transgender. The game contained dialogue about her challenges being misgendered and her journey to understanding her own identity.

Identity fraud never sleeps. Neither does this ID theft assistant.

#artificialintelligence

From sanitizing wipes to romantic encounters, the pandemic turned 2020 into a record-breaking year for scams – which are often linked to identity theft and fraud. No one knows this better than employees of the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC). Demands for live-chat support had been steadily increasing since 2014. But the ITRC was flooded with requests in 2020, including 1.1 million website visits and 11,000 contact center requests. How could they keep up with the continual, frenzied growth in demand?

New ID crime chatbot could have future B2B cyber applications

#artificialintelligence

A new AI-based chatbot tool used to help identity crime victims seek after-hours help was also designed with future B2B applications in mind, including helping employees report a cyberattack when the IT or security team is unavailable. This chatbot helper is a new service currently undergoing beta testing by the Identity Theft Resource Center (ITRC), leveraging technology developed by its partner SAS Institute. Thanks to ViViAN, individuals do not have to wait until normal ITRC business hours in order to report an incident; rather, they can lodge their complaints with the chatbot and receive reassurance and guidance on the immediate next steps they should take. All communications with ViViAN are then later followed up by a live agent when one becomes available. But at least this way, victims are able to act swiftly when their data is at stake and time is of the essence.
