CES 2026 opening night recap: All the early news you missed from Samsung and LG

Engadget

The first CES announcements are already landing before the show floor opens. CES 2026 is still a day away from officially opening, but Sunday, January 4, delivered the first real wave of news. As has become tradition, the pre-show slate set the tone for the week ahead, anchored by Samsung's annual First Look press conference and CES Unveiled, the latter of which where hundreds of companies previewed products before the show floor opens on January 6. Samsung once again dominated the early conversation with its First Look event, using the stage to outline how it sees AI shaping everything from TVs to home appliances in the year ahead. Rather than focusing on individual specs, Samsung framed its 2026 lineup around adaptive experiences, with screens and devices designed to respond more intelligently to their environment and the people using them.

British parts found in Russian drones, Zelensky says

BBC News

British microcomputers were among more than 100,000 foreign-made parts contained in Russian missiles and drones used in Sunday's deadly strikes on Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky has said. The Ukrainian president called for further effective sanctions after saying parts originating in allied countries including Germany, Japan and the US have been identified in Russian weapons. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) said it had recently undertaken efforts to crack down on UK firms whose products have continued to make their way into Russia's military supply chain. We take reports of goods from UK companies being found in Russian weaponry incredibly seriously, a government spokesperson said. The spokesperson said the government had banned the export of thousands of goods to Russia including every battlefield item Ukraine has brought to our attention, adding that they have imposed the most the most severe package of sanctions. What are the sanctions on Russia and are they working?

Denmark bans all civilian drone flights ahead of European summit

BBC News

Denmark has banned all civilian drone flights this week ahead of a European Union summit in Copenhagen, the country's transport minister said on Sunday. The ministry said the decision was made in order to simplify security work for the police, and they could not accept foreign drones creating uncertainty and disruption. Denmark is one of several European countries that have reported drone incidents in recent weeks, with unidentified drones sighted above Danish military sites as recently as Saturday. Defence ministers from 10 EU countries have agreed to create a drone wall in response to the sightings, and Nato says it has enhanced vigilance across the Baltic. In their statement announcing the ban, the transport ministry said police were on significantly increased alert ahead of this week's summit and that they needed to take care of Danes and our guests.

Massive Russian drone and missile attack kills four in Kyiv

The Japan Times

Men stand at the site of heavily damaged residential buildings following a Russian air attack on the outskirts of Kyiv on Sunday. KYIV - A massive Russian drone and missile attack against Ukraine lasting 12 hours into Sunday killed at least four people in Kyiv, including a 12-year-old girl, Ukrainian authorities said. Neighboring Poland scrambled jets to secure its airspace in the wake of the barrage, after NATO accused Moscow of being behind a series of violations of the defense alliance's airspace. Diplomatic efforts to stop the war have faltered, and Russia has vowed to press on with the offensive that it launched in February 2022. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

Drones were observed over Danish military sites Saturday night for the second straight day, Denmark's army said on Sunday. In a time of both misinformation and too much information, quality journalism is more crucial than ever.

A large-scale Russian drone attack in the southeastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro has killed three people, including a young girl, according to the regional governor, hours before officials from the United States, Europe and Ukraine gather in Paris to discuss the conflict. A student residence, an educational institution and a food processing plant were also damaged, Dnipro Mayor Borys Filatov added.
