It's not uncommon to catch drivers singing by themselves in their cars, but soon you may see more of them having conversations instead. Automakers around the world are jumping on the artificial intelligence bandwagon and aiming to offer ChatGPT and similar generative AI features in their vehicles soon. "Having an assistant and really being able to use voice that is clear enough that you can ask questions and get answers, I think that's what the artificial intelligence will enable us to do," GM CEO Mary Barra recently told FOX Business. One company that knows a lot about chit-chat on the move is SoundHound, a major supplier of voice recognition systems used by several automakers, including Hyundai and Mercedes-Benz.

With AI beginning to transform just about everything, the potential $1.8 trillion AI boom could mint a few millionaires. Even analysts at Bank of America are excited, noting that AI stocks are on the brink of an "iPhone moment" and could boost the global economy by $15.7 trillion in seven years. "We are at a defining moment – like the internet in the '90s – where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is moving towards mass adoption, with large language models like ChatGPT finally enabling us to fully capitalize on the data revolution," the firm told Business Insider. "It took ChatGPT just 5 days to reach 1 million users, 1 billion cumulative visits in 3 months, and an adoption rate which is 3x Tik Tok and 10x Instagram's," they added. "The technology is developing exponentially."

The craze surrounding OpenAI's ChatGPT has reached small-cap artificial intelligence stocks, as investors relay excitement over the potential future of the space. Under-the-radar firms BigBear.ai and SoundHound AI have both seen bullish runs in recent months. In January alone, BigBear saw an increase of 356%, while SoundHound climbed 56%. BigBear.ai is rooted in artificial intelligence, and the firm's breadth of products offer applications to industries including healthcare, government and manufacturing. SoundHound, meanwhile, focuses on conversational intelligence, which integrates AI interactions with users that is voice activated.

SoundHound, the company that once said it wanted to challenge Amazon and Google's dominance in the AI voice market, has reportedly cut about half its workforce. According to Gizmodo, the firm laid off about 200 employees last week as part of a company-wide restructuring. If Gizmodo's reporting is accurate, the mass layoffs would mark the second staff reduction SoundHound has undertaken in less than a year. In November, the company reportedly laid off 10 percent of its workforce. Before the first round of cuts, SoundHound employed approximately 450 people.

The new service combines speech-to-text processing with natural language understanding to annotate and mark different topics and speakers while they are still talking.
