Situationally-aware Path Planning Exploiting 3D Scene Graphs

--3D Scene Graphs integrate both metric and semantic information, yet their structure remains underexploited for improving path planning efficiency and interpretability. In this work, we present S-Path, a Situationally-aware Path planner that leverages the metric-semantic structure of indoor 3D Scene Graphs to significantly enhance planning efficiency. S-Path follows a two-stage process: it first performs a search over a semantic graph derived from the scene graph to yield a human-understandable high-level path. This also identifies relevant regions for planning, which later allows the decomposition of the problem into smaller, independent subproblems that can be solved in parallel. We also introduce a replanning mechanism that, in the event of an infeasible path, reuses information from previously solved subproblems to update semantic heuristics and prioritize re-use to further improve the efficiency of future planning attempts. Extensive experiments on both real-world and simulated environments show that S-Path achieves average reductions of 5.7x in planning time while maintaining comparable path optimality to classical sampling-based planners, and surpassing them in complex scenarios, making it an efficient and interpretable path planner for environments represented by indoor 3D scene graphs. Traditional path planners for indoor robot navigation rely on dense sampling of the configuration space (C-space) to find feasible paths, but their computational cost grows rapidly with its size and complexity, limiting efficiency and usability.
Hierarchical Sampling-based Planner with LTL Constraints and Text Prompting

This project introduces a hierarchical planner integrating Linear Temporal Logic (LTL) constraints with natural language prompting for robot motion planning. The framework decomposes maps into regions, generates directed graphs, and converts them into transition systems for high-level planning. Text instructions are translated into LTL formulas and converted to Deterministic Finite Automata (DFA) for sequential goal-reaching tasks while adhering to safety constraints. High-level plans, derived via Breadth-First Search (BFS), guide low-level planners like Exploring Random Trees (RRT) and Probabilistic Roadmaps (PRM) for obstacle-avoidant navigation along with LTL tasks. The approach demonstrates adaptability to various task complexities, though challenges such as graph construction overhead and suboptimal path generation remain. Future directions include extending to considering terrain conditions and incorporating higher-order dynamics.

Deep-Reinforcement-Learning-based Path Planning for Industrial Robots using Distance Sensors as Observation

Industrial robots are widely used in various manufacturing environments due to their efficiency in doing repetitive tasks such as assembly or welding. A common problem for these applications is to reach a destination without colliding with obstacles or other robot arms. Commonly used sampling-based path planning approaches such as RRT require long computation times, especially in complex environments. Furthermore, the environment in which they are employed needs to be known beforehand. When utilizing the approaches in new environments, a tedious engineering effort in setting hyperparameters needs to be conducted, which is time- and cost-intensive. On the other hand, Deep Reinforcement Learning has shown remarkable results in dealing with unknown environments, generalizing new problem instances, and solving motion planning problems efficiently. On that account, this paper proposes a Deep-Reinforcement-Learning-based motion planner for robotic manipulators. We evaluated our model against state-of-the-art sampling-based planners in several experiments. The results show the superiority of our planner in terms of path length and execution time.
Efficient Path Planning in Narrow Passages for Robots with Ellipsoidal Components

Path planning has long been one of the major research areas in robotics, with PRM and RRT being two of the most effective classes of planners. Though generally very efficient, these sampling-based planners can become computationally expensive in the important case of "narrow passages". This paper develops a path planning paradigm specifically formulated for narrow passage problems. The core is based on planning for rigid-body robots encapsulated by unions of ellipsoids. Each environmental feature is represented geometrically using a strictly convex body with a $\mathcal{C}^1$ boundary (e.g., superquadric). The main benefit of doing this is that configuration-space obstacles can be parameterized explicitly in closed form, thereby allowing prior knowledge to be used to avoid sampling infeasible configurations. Then, by characterizing a tight volume bound for multiple ellipsoids, robot transitions involving rotations are guaranteed to be collision-free without needing to perform traditional collision detection. Furthermore, by combining with a stochastic sampling strategy, the proposed planning framework can be extended to solving higher dimensional problems in which the robot has a moving base and articulated appendages. Benchmark results show that the proposed framework often outperforms the sampling-based planners in terms of computational time and success rate in finding a path through narrow corridors for both single-body robots and those with higher dimensional configuration spaces. Physical experiments using the proposed framework are further demonstrated on a humanoid robot that walks in several cluttered environments with narrow passages.

Learning Sampling Distributions Using Local 3D Workspace Decompositions for Motion Planning in High Dimensions

Earlier work has shown that reusing experience from prior motion planning problems can improve the efficiency of similar, future motion planning queries. However, for robots with many degrees-of-freedom, these methods exhibit poor generalization across different environments and often require large datasets that are impractical to gather. We present SPARK and FLAME , two experience-based frameworks for sampling-based planning applicable to complex manipulators in 3 D environments. Both combine samplers associated with features from a workspace decomposition into a global biased sampling distribution. SPARK decomposes the environment based on exact geometry while FLAME is more general, and uses an octree-based decomposition obtained from sensor data. We demonstrate the effectiveness of SPARK and FLAME on a Fetch robot tasked with challenging pick-and-place manipulation problems. Our approaches can be trained incrementally and significantly improve performance with only a handful of examples, generalizing better over diverse tasks and environments as compared to prior approaches.
Using Local Experiences for Global Motion Planning

Sampling-based planners are effective in many real-world applications such as robotics manipulation, navigation, and even protein modeling. However, it is often challenging to generate a collision-free path in environments where key areas are hard to sample. In the absence of any prior information, sampling-based planners are forced to explore uniformly or heuristically, which can lead to degraded performance. One way to improve performance is to use prior knowledge of environments to adapt the sampling strategy to the problem at hand. In this work, we decompose the workspace into local primitives, memorizing local experiences by these primitives in the form of local samplers, and store them in a database. We synthesize an efficient global sampler by retrieving local experiences relevant to the given situation. Our method transfers knowledge effectively between diverse environments that share local primitives and speeds up the performance dramatically. Our results show, in terms of solution time, an improvement of multiple orders of magnitude in two traditionally challenging high-dimensional problems compared to state-of-the-art approaches.
