Wavelet-Guided Water-Level Estimation for ISAC

Real-time water-level monitoring across many locations is vital for flood response, infrastructure management, and environmental forecasting. Yet many sensing methods rely on fixed instruments - acoustic, radar, camera, or pressure probes - that are costly to install and maintain and are vulnerable during extreme events. We propose a passive, low-cost water-level tracking scheme that uses only LTE downlink power metrics reported by commodity receivers. The method extracts per-antenna RSRP, RSSI, and RSRQ, applies a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) to the RSRP to isolate the semidiurnal tide component, and forms a summed-coefficient signature that simultaneously marks high/low tide (tide-turn times) and tracks the tide-rate (flow speed) over time. These wavelet features guide a lightweight neural network that learns water-level changes over time from a short training segment. Beyond a single serving base station, we also show a multi-base-station cooperative mode: independent CWTs are computed per carrier and fused by a robust median to produce one tide-band feature that improves stability and resilience to local disturbances. Experiments over a 420 m river path under line-of-sight conditions achieve root-mean-square and mean-absolute errors of 0.8 cm and 0.5 cm, respectively. Under a non-line-of-sight setting with vegetation and vessel traffic, the same model transfers successfully after brief fine-tuning, reaching 1.7 cm RMSE and 0.8 cm MAE. Unlike CSI-based methods, the approach needs no array calibration and runs on standard hardware, making wide deployment practical. When signals from multiple base stations are available, fusion further improves robustness.


Semantic-Aware Edge Intelligence for UAV Handover in 6G Networks

6G wireless networks aim to exploit semantic awareness to optimize radio resources. By optimizing the transmission through the lens of the desired goal, the energy consumption of transmissions can also be reduced, and the latency can be improved. To that end, this paper investigates a paradigm in which the capabilities of generative AI (GenAI) on the edge are harnessed for network optimization. In particular, we investigate an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) handover framework that takes advantage of GenAI and semantic communication to maintain reliable connectivity. To that end, we propose a framework in which a lightweight MobileBERT language model, fine-tuned using Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA), is deployed on the UAV. This model processes multi-attribute flight and radio measurements and performs multi-label classification to determine appropriate handover action. Concurrently, the model identifies an appropriate set of contextual "Reason Tags" that elucidate the decision's rationale. Our model, evaluated on a rule-based synthetic dataset of UAV handover scenarios, demonstrates the model's high efficacy in learning these rules, achieving high accuracy in predicting the primary handover decision. The model also shows strong performance in identifying supporting reasons, with an F1 micro-score of approximately 0.9 for reason tags.


BYON: Bring Your Own Networks for Digital Agriculture Applications

Digital agriculture technologies rely on sensors, drones, robots, and autonomous farm equipment to improve farm yields and incorporate sustainability practices. However, the adoption of such technologies is severely limited by the lack of broadband connectivity in rural areas. We argue that farming applications do not require permanent always-on connectivity. Instead, farming activity and digital agriculture applications follow seasonal rhythms of agriculture. Therefore, the need for connectivity is highly localized in time and space. We introduce BYON, a new connectivity model for high bandwidth agricultural applications that relies on emerging connectivity solutions like citizens broadband radio service (CBRS) and satellite networks. BYON creates an agile connectivity solution that can be moved along a farm to create spatio-temporal connectivity bubbles. BYON incorporates a new gateway design that reacts to the presence of crops and optimizes coverage in agricultural settings. We evaluate BYON in a production farm and demonstrate its benefits.


Conformal Prediction for Multimodal Regression

This paper introduces multimodal conformal regression. Traditionally confined to scenarios with solely numerical input features, conformal prediction is now extended to multimodal contexts through our methodology, which harnesses internal features from complex neural network architectures processing images and unstructured text. Our findings highlight the potential for internal neural network features, extracted from convergence points where multimodal information is combined, to be used by conformal prediction to construct prediction intervals (PIs). This capability paves new paths for deploying conformal prediction in domains abundant with multimodal data, enabling a broader range of problems to benefit from guaranteed distribution-free uncertainty quantification.


On the Application of Deep Learning for Precise Indoor Positioning in 6G

Accurate localization in indoor environments is a challenge due to the Non Line of Sight (NLoS) nature of the signaling. In this paper, we explore the use of AI/ML techniques for positioning accuracy enhancement in Indoor Factory (InF) scenarios. The proposed neural network, which we term LocNet, is trained on measurements such as Channel Impulse Response (CIR) and Reference Signal Received Power (RSRP) from multiple Transmit Receive Points (TRPs). Simulation results show that when using measurements from 18 TRPs, LocNet achieves a 9 cm positioning accuracy at the 90th percentile. Additionally, we demonstrate that the same model generalizes effectively even when measurements from some TRPs randomly become unavailable. Lastly, we provide insights on the robustness of the trained model to the errors in ground truth labels used for training.


AI-Based Beam-Level and Cell-Level Mobility Management for High Speed Railway Communications

High-speed railway (HSR) communications are pivotal for ensuring rail safety, operations, maintenance, and delivering passenger information services. The high speed of trains creates rapidly time-varying wireless channels, increases the signaling overhead, and reduces the system throughput, making it difficult to meet the growing and stringent needs of HSR applications. In this article, we explore artificial intelligence (AI)-based beam-level and cell-level mobility management suitable for HSR communications, including the use cases, inputs, outputs, and key performance indicators (KPI)s of AI models. Particularly, in comparison to traditional down-sampling spatial beam measurements, we show that the compressed spatial multi-beam measurements via compressive sensing lead to improved spatial-temporal beam prediction. Moreover, we demonstrate the performance gains of AI-assisted cell handover over traditional mobile handover mechanisms. In addition, we observe that the proposed approaches to reduce the measurement overhead achieve comparable radio link failure performance with the traditional approach that requires all the beam measurements of all cells, while the former methods can save 50% beam measurement overhead.


Deep UAV Path Planning with Assured Connectivity in Dense Urban Setting

Unmanned Ariel Vehicle (UAV) services with 5G connectivity is an emerging field with numerous applications. Operator-controlled UAV flights and manual static flight configurations are major limitations for the wide adoption of scalability of UAV services. Several services depend on excellent UAV connectivity with a cellular network and maintaining it is challenging in predetermined flight paths. This paper addresses these limitations by proposing a Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) framework for UAV path planning with assured connectivity (DUPAC). During UAV flight, DUPAC determines the best route from a defined source to the destination in terms of distance and signal quality. The viability and performance of DUPAC are evaluated under simulated real-world urban scenarios using the Unity framework. The results confirm that DUPAC achieves an autonomous UAV flight path similar to base method with only 2% increment while maintaining an average 9% better connection quality throughout the flight.


RL-Based Cargo-UAV Trajectory Planning and Cell Association for Minimum Handoffs, Disconnectivity, and Energy Consumption

Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is a promising technology for last-mile cargo delivery. However, the limited on-board battery capacity, cellular unreliability, and frequent handoffs in the airspace are the main obstacles to unleash its full potential. Given that existing cellular networks were primarily designed to service ground users, re-utilizing the same architecture for highly mobile aerial users, e.g., cargo-UAVs, is deemed challenging. Indeed, to ensure a safe delivery using cargo-UAVs, it is crucial to utilize the available energy efficiently, while guaranteeing reliable connectivity for command-and-control and avoiding frequent handoff. To achieve this goal, we propose a novel approach for joint cargo-UAV trajectory planning and cell association. Specifically, we formulate the cargo-UAV mission as a multi-objective problem aiming to 1) minimize energy consumption, 2) reduce handoff events, and 3) guarantee cellular reliability along the trajectory. We leverage reinforcement learning (RL) to jointly optimize the cargo-UAV's trajectory and cell association. Simulation results demonstrate a performance improvement of our proposed method, in terms of handoffs, disconnectivity, and energy consumption, compared to benchmarks.


Hierarchical ML Codebook Design for Extreme MIMO Beam Management

Beam management is a strategy to unify beamforming and channel state information (CSI) acquisition with large antenna arrays in 5G. Codebooks serve multiple uses in beam management including beamforming reference signals, CSI reporting, and analog beam training. In this paper, we propose and evaluate a machine learning-refined codebook design process for extremely large multiple-input multiple-output (X-MIMO) systems. We propose a neural network and beam selection strategy to design the initial access and refinement codebooks using end-to-end learning from beamspace representations. The algorithm, called Extreme-Beam Management (X-BM), can significantly improve the performance of extremely large arrays as envisioned for 6G and capture realistic wireless and physical layer aspects. Our results show an 8dB improvement in initial access and overall effective spectral efficiency improvements compared to traditional codebook methods.


Machine Learning Aided Holistic Handover Optimization for Emerging Networks

In the wake of network densification and multi-band operation in emerging cellular networks, mobility and handover management is becoming a major bottleneck. The problem is further aggravated by the fact that holistic mobility management solutions for different types of handovers, namely inter-frequency and intra-frequency handovers, remain scarce. This paper presents a first mobility management solution that concurrently optimizes inter-frequency related A5 parameters and intra-frequency related A3 parameters. We analyze and optimize five parameters namely A5-time to trigger (TTT), A5-threshold1, A5-threshold2, A3-TTT, and A3-offset to jointly maximize three critical key performance indicators (KPIs): edge user reference signal received power (RSRP), handover success rate (HOSR) and load between frequency bands. In the absence of tractable analytical models due to system level complexity, we leverage machine learning to quantify the KPIs as a function of the mobility parameters. An XGBoost based model has the best performance for edge RSRP and HOSR while random forest outperforms others for load prediction. An analysis of the mobility parameters provides several insights: 1) there exists a strong coupling between A3 and A5 parameters; 2) an optimal set of parameters exists for each KPI; and 3) the optimal parameters vary for different KPIs. We also perform a SHAP based sensitivity to help resolve the parametric conflict between the KPIs. Finally, we formulate a maximization problem, show it is non-convex, and solve it utilizing simulated annealing (SA). Results indicate that ML-based SA-aided solution is more than 14x faster than the brute force approach with a slight loss in optimality.
