Even a rebrand may not be able to save America's most storied gaming event
Even a rebrand may not be able to save America's most storied gaming event In this week's newsletter: since 1988 the Game Developers Conference has been a core part of the gaming calendar - but exorbitant costs and Trumpism put that at risk E very year for as long as I have been alive (read: since 1988), the annual Game Developers Conference has been held in California. It started out as essentially a house party: a gathering of 27 people in the living room of Atari designer Chris Crawford. By the mid-90s it had left Chris's house and grown to more than 4,000 attenders, and in 2005 found a permanent home in San Francisco's Moscone Center. These days, about 30,000 game development professionals of all kinds attend every year. The online GDC Vault is a precious trove of game development history and useful advice for any gaming discipline.

'Windows Intelligence': Microsoft might be rebranding its Windows AI tools
According to Windows Central, Microsoft might be looking to rebrand its collection of Windows AI capabilities under a new name. A couple of weeks ago, one Twitter user was digging through the AppPrivacy.adml Specifically, a setting called "Let Apps Access Windows Intelligence." Microsoft has up until now been using the name "Copilot" for over a year to identify its suite of AI-powered tools and features. However, keen readers will remember that Copilot itself was a rebranding of what was previously known as Bing Chat, with the term "copilot" reminiscent of GitHub's AI-driven Copilot code completion tool.
Google's Bard AI officially becomes Gemini
If you asked a hundred people on the street what Google's generative artificial intelligence product is called, I'm betting that 98 of them wouldn't know, unless that street happens to be in San Jose. It's "Bard," for the record, unconsciously associating generative AI with British playwrights and D&D players who failed their sexual harassment prevention training. Now it's called "Google Gemini," after a brief period of rebranding, and it's debuting in Google's workplace products. Gemini is an umbrella term for Google's generative AI (a separate app on Android, embedded within the Google search app on iOS) and its integration into existing services like Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and Meet, where it was sometimes referred to as "Duet" before. Some advanced capabilities, like being a "personal tutor" or assistive writing in "more advanced coding scenarios," will be behind a Gemini Advanced paywall.
TechScape: Will Meta's open-source LLM make AI safer – or put it into the wrong hands?
The AI summer is well and truly upon us. Whether we call this period the peak of the "hype cycle" or simply the moment the curve goes vertical will only be obvious in hindsight, but the cadence of big news in the field has gone from weekly to almost daily. Let's catch up with what the biggest players in AI – Meta, Microsoft, Apple and OpenAI – are doing. Always one to keep its cards close to its chest, don't expect to hear of many R&D breakthroughs from Cupertino. Even the AI work that has made it into shipping products is hidden rather than shouted from the rooftops, with the company talking about "machine learning" and "transformers" at its annual worldwide developer conference (WWDC) last month, but conspicuously steering clear of saying "AI".

Grid.ai rebrands as Lightning AI, raises $40M for AI dev tools – TechCrunch
Lightning AI, the startup behind the open source PyTorch Lightning framework, today announced that it raised $40 million in a Series B round led by Coatue with participation from Index Ventures, Bain, the Chainsmokers' Mantis VC and First Minute Capital. CEO William Falcon told TechCrunch that the new money will be used to expand Lightning AI's 60-person team while supporting the community around PyTorch Lightning development. Lightning AI, formerly Grid.ai, is the culmination of work that began in 2018 at the New York University Computational Intelligence, Learning, Vision, and Robotics (NYU CILVR) Lab and Facebook AI Research (now Meta AI Research). After Falcon started developing PyTorch Lightning as an undergrad at Columbia in 2015, he founded Lightning AI in 2019 with Luis Capelo, the former head of data products at Forbes. While working on his PhD at NYU and Facebook AI Research, Falcon open sourced PyTorch Lightning and -- according to him -- the project quickly gained traction.

Bossa Nova de-emphasizes robots in 'retail AI' rebrand
Bossa Nova is taking a "broader approach" to image-based AI analytics for retailers. Bossa Nova Robotics is no stranger to pivoting its business. The company started out working on robotic toys when it was founded in 2005. Then it developed a robot for researchers called "mObi" that was based on Carnegie Mellon University's ballbot spherical locomotion technology. Then it rolled out what it's best known for – autonomous mobile robots for inventory tracking, with Walmart as its primary customer.
IPsoft Honors Pioneering Spirit of Conversational AI Innovation with Rebrand to Amelia - Amelia
New York, October 1, 2020 – IPsoft, the largest independent leader in enterprise artificial intelligence (AI), today announced that it has rebranded as Amelia, an IPsoft Company. Chetan Dube, founder and CEO of Amelia commented: "Since its naissance, the mission of IPsoft has been to create fulfilling, human experiences through groundbreaking AI solutions. "Emboldened by this pioneering spirit, we've changed our name to Amelia, in honor of the groundbreaking aviator Amelia Earhart.
Is artificial intelligence in need of a rebrand?
When we think of cutting-edge technology, it's usually in a positive context. New technologies are exciting, futuristic and belong in Hollywood's biggest blockbusters. So why has artificial intelligence (AI) gained such a bad reputation? Jaywing Intelligence recently conducted research into Twitter conversations about AI - exploring whether the negative media content around'robots stealing our jobs' was fake news. It found that data scientists are principally concerned with the development and techniques of AI and, while aware there will be an impact on jobs, they aren't displaying significant concern.
