Deakin University Welcomes New Avalon Facility

#artificialintelligence

Deakin University says it welcomes the announcement from Hanwha Defense Australia, and the Australian Government, that its new armoured vehicle centre of excellence will be constructed at Avalon Airport. Deakin Vice-Chancellor Professor Iain Martin said the Geelong-based centre would cement the University's close connection with Hanwha, facilitating investment in local research expertise and the development of high-tech jobs. It's expected the new bespoke production facility will create a minimum of 300 jobs, spread across construction, acquisition and maintenance, as well as generating ongoing support opportunities for Australian industry until the late 2040s. Deakin and Hanwha Defense Australia signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) last year, an agreement to drive collaboration in modelling and simulation, machine learning applications and human performance. "Deakin and Hanwha share a common goal in the development of emerging technologies and advanced manufacturing, with a focus on growing the local economy through education and employment opportunities," Professor Martin said.

Valentine's Day scams: Beware phony romances, fake shopping offers

USATODAY - Tech Top Stories

Unfortunately, scams trying to steal your heart and money are, too. As Valentine's Day nears, potential scammers are attempting to take advantage, focused on stealing personal information or money. Whether you're looking for love on social networks or dating sites or looking to buy a special gift for your loved one, scammers are lurking to trick you. This season in particular, as many Americans remain homebound due to COVID-19 outbreaks, the number of scams related to romance or Valentine's Day is on the rise. Lynette Owens, global director of internet safety at Trend Micro, said scams related to romance are up 20% over last year, caused by the "double whammy" of people staying online more due to the pandemic and increased isolation.

AI Meets Pro AV

#artificialintelligence

Data-driven AV is nothing new. For the past five years, AV endpoints have been migrating to the network with the promise of capturing room metrics and system analytics. The cloud, 5G's lightning-fast connectivity, IoT sensors, and artificial intelligence (AI) are converging to capture more valuable data in more locations. Some AV professionals believe this confluence will usher in a new era of design, one in which systems are built with learned user behaviors in mind. AI is already making an impact in higher education.

Not for cis straight men: the dating app that launched a thousand queer love stories

The Guardian

Caché Owens and Cynthia Velásquez reached the same conclusion within days of meeting: they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together. The pair first started talking on Instagram in January, through a popular account that offered a contemporary version of traditional newspaper personal ads. Owens, a 29-year-old artist and professor, had never had much luck on dating apps, but the Personals page was different. It did not use photos, but instead featured a long list of bios of queer and trans people looking for internet friends, lovers or partners across the globe. Velásquez and Owens' DMs turned into daily phone calls, they got engaged in April, Velásquez moved from Los Angeles to North Carolina to be with Owens in May, and the two are getting married next month, just before the one-year anniversary of their first Instagram chat.

Guardian's In-Car Camera Watches the Driver--And Everyone Else

WIRED

If sometimes you feel like somebody's watching you, get ready to feel that way all the time. At least if you spend a good amount of time in your car. And you'll only be more surveilled in the future, as automakers find new and more efficient ways to keep track of what's happening inside their vehicles. One of the latest tools in this move toward a, let's say senior sibling, state comes from Guardian Optical Technologies, an Israeli outfit promising a whole new view of what's happening inside the car. This week at CES in Las Vegas, the Tel Aviv-based startup showed off what it calls Optical Cabin Control.

Getty Images Is Using Artificial Intelligence to Help Newsrooms Choose Better Photos

#artificialintelligence

Getty Images is embracing artificial intelligence, starting with a way to help publishers pick photos. Today, the photo agency debuted a tool that uses AI to analyze a story and suggest photos that might go along with it depending on the text and content. The tool, called Panels, uses natural language processing--a term for how computers can learn to "read" human words, phrases and sentences--to then match a story based on keywords, images, captions and other criteria. Publishers also will then have access to custom filters and a self-improving algorithm to move around keywords or select images through a more human-driven process. Here's how it works: When someone enters in the URL for a story or copies and pastes in the text, Panels will analyze the words before suggesting people, places and things that appear in the story after weighing different options based on frequency and relevance.
