Klarna: AI lets us cut thousands of jobs - but pay more

BBC News

Klarna - which is based in Sweden, and has two UK offices - disclosed its job-cutting plans as it announced interim results which showed it increased its revenue by 27% to 13.3 billion Swedish krona ( 990 million). "Our proven scale efficiencies have been enhanced by our investment in AI, which has driven down operating expenses and improved gross profits," it said. It comes as unions have warned of mass job losses amid the growth of AI and are calling for legislation to protect workers. Mr Siemiatkowski said Klarna would reduce its headcount through what he called "natural attrition" - effectively a hiring freeze, where staff aren't replaced after they leave. Typically this means the people that remain are left with an increased workload. But Mr Siemiatkowski contended that AI would be replacing this work, and even claimed it was a potential "positive development" for some individuals who may be paid more.

As Employers Embrace AI, Workers Fret--and Seek Input

TIME - Tech

The Swedish buy-now-pay-later company Klarna has become something of a poster child for the potential benefits of generative artificial intelligence. The company relies on AI to create and tailor promotional images and to draft marketing copy, saving millions of dollars. Earlier this year it said an AI chatbot assistant was doing the work of 700 human customer-service agents, which it forecast would boost profits by 40 million this year. Klarna's approach highlights generative AI's promise for powering businesswide systems, like customer service. U.S. businesses are investing in AI, and they're eager to see such gains.

Klarna Adds ChatGPT as an Enhancement to Online Shopping – Digital Transactions

#artificialintelligence

ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence-based chatbot developed by OpenAI, is being rolled out by Klarna AB to provide what the payments platform calls personalized and intuitive shopping experiences. Online shoppers will be able to ask Klarna, through the chatbot, for product recommendations, as well as receive links to shop recommended products through Klarna's search and compare tool. While Klarna says it will not be using ChatGPT for payments, the company joins Stripe Inc. as one of the first payments companies to adopt the technology in any capacity. Stripe announced earlier this month it was incorporating ChatGPT's natural-language technology into its products and services. Klarna will enable the ChatGPT plugin for ChatGPT users, beginning with ChatGPT Plus subscribers in the United States and Canada, and gradually roll the technology out to other regions.

9 AI and machine learning startups you need to know about

#artificialintelligence

The global tech startup scene is a noisy, crowded space. And then there are the stories of those entrepreneurs whose ideas have endured into something truly transformational; Amazon, Apple, Google, you name it--many of the biggest and most influential companies in the world today were born of this heritage. "One thing we can all agree on: The key attribute of a startup is its ability to grow," wrote Forbes' Natalie Robehmed. And as my former CEO, Mark Jones, used to say, "All big companies were once small companies too. The only difference is that they grew up."
