Tweet round up from #ECAI2024: part 2

The 27th European Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ECAI-2024) took place from 19-24 October. Held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, the event featured a full programme of technical papers, keynote and invited talks, workshops and tutorials, and panels. We took a look at what participants got up to over the second half of the event. AI Regulation: The European Scenario shed light on policy shifts, and The Economic Impact of AI discussed the challenges and opportunities ahead. Huge thanks to everyone who came to my #ecai2024 presentation and made it such a rewarding experience with your insightful questions and discussions!

Causality is represented mathematically via Structural Causal Models (SCMs), with two key elements, a graph and a set of equations. The golden standard causal graph, C E, R, is a Bidirected Cyclic Multi-Graph or Causal Loop-Graph Network (BCG/CGN), where entity-vertices E (circles, nodes, points) in a causal BCG represent variables and edges R (arrows, links, ties, arcs, lines) represent causation, direct or inverse. It is strongly connected containing a directed path from x to y (and from y to x) for every pair of vertices (x, y), while having circuits or loops, that is, arcs that directly connect nodes with themselves, and multiple arrows with the same source and target nodes, thus covering all possible directed graphs as a Directed Acyclic Graphs (DAG) or weighted directed graphs/networks. The set of equations is a Structural Equation Model (SEM), showing the causal connections and the details of the relationship. SEMs represent all possible interrelationships between or among variables.

With automated driving features set to be unleashed on motorways next year, car manufacturers and industry have created a new set of guidelines to ensure the technology is marketed'accurately and responsibly' to drivers. Concerns around the safety implications and mis-selling of varying technologies and their capabilities has resulted in the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, SMMT publishing guiding principles to ensure motorists know if and when they can use hands-free driving features. These new guidelines have been co-developed and agreed by experts within the Centre for Connected and #AutonomousVehicles and backed by road safety groups. The industry-led principles will ensure consumers receive'consistent and clear information' regarding the difference between'automated' and'assisted' driving features, with the latter requiring drivers to keep their hands on the wheel at all times.

The system can use any brain's electrical signals measured by applications on the scalp, on the cortical surface, or in the cortex to control external application. The most researched signals are: Electrical and magnetic signals of brain's activity captured by the intracortical electrode array, electrocorticography (ECoG), electroencephalography (EEG), magnetoencephalography (MEG) techniques. Metabolic signals measuring blood flow in the brain acquired by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) or functional near-infrared imaging (fNIRS) techniques.
