'Impressive for a robot': home care chatbots among AI tools being embraced by Australia's health system From GPs using the technology to record consultations to AI'detectives' finding brain lesions on scans, experts say it's only the beginning Fri 3 Oct 2025 11.00 EDTLast modified on Fri 3 Oct 2025 11.02 EDT Peta Rolls came to expect Aida's call at 10am each morning. A daily check-in call from an AI voice bot was not part of the service Rolls expected when she signed up for St Vincent's home care but when they asked her to be part of the trial four months ago, the 79-year-old said yes because she wanted to help. Although, truth be told, her expectations were low. Nevertheless, when she got the call, she says: "I was so overtaken by how responsive she was.

Buttigieg's message on restricting civilian drones near Hurricane Helene damage prompts outcry, clarification
Fox News contributor Marc Thiessen joined'Fox & Friends' to discuss why President Biden and Vice President Harris are facing scrutiny for their response to Hurricane Helene. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) clarified a message that warned civilian drone pilots not to fly near Hurricane Helene recovery and rescue efforts -- or risk penalty, fines or "criminal prosecution" -- after facing intense backlash online. Reached by Fox News Digital, a DOT spokesperson said civilian drone pilots are permitted and are assisting in rescue and recovery efforts, and previous "temporary flight restrictions" have since been lifted. Some X users -- collectively with millions of followers -- reacted adversely to a message addressed to drone pilots and with accompanying video from Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg shared by the department earlier this week. The message and video argued the restrictions would prohibit civilian volunteers from legally searching for victims or survivors when response time matters most or capturing their own footage of the disaster.

AV group unveils federal policy framework for Congress, DOT
The Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association on Wednesday released a U.S. policy framework outlining key priorities for federal AV legislation and regulation. The group's framework includes several recommendations for Congress and the U.S. Department of Transportation to steer federal action and advance the deployment and commercialization of AVs across the U.S. "AVs are testing and operating in states around the country, bringing people and goods to where they need to go. America is currently the leader in AV technology, but other countries are surging forward," said Jeff Farrah, executive director of the trade association, whose members include Aurora, Cruise, Ford, Volkswagen, Waymo and Zoox. "It is time for the U.S. to solidify our leadership," he continued, "and these policy recommendations will expand opportunities for AVs to increase road safety, create new mobility options and support economic growth and new jobs." The group said it is the first recommended federal framework that covers all modes of AVs, including delivery vehicles, trucks and passenger cars.

Self-driving cars face uncertain path to U.S. deployment
WASHINGTON, Oct 28 (Reuters) - Automakers and tech companies face a bumpy road to clearing regulatory roadblocks to deploying autonomous vehicles (AVs) without human controls on public roads, industry officials and lawmakers said. On Wednesday, Ford Motor Co (F.N) and Volkswagen AG (VOWG_p.DE) said they would shutter self-driving startup Argo AI, saying the technology was a long way off. The same is true when it comes to rules around the technology as well. Legislation in Congress has been stalled for more than five years over how to amend regulations to encompass self-driving cars, including the scope of consumer and legal protections. And U.S. regulators have given no indication when they might act on petitions to initially approve a few thousand self-driving cars on U.S. roads without steering wheels or brake pedals.

Leaked Docs Show China Using Artificial Intelligence to Target Entire Groups of People for Arrest
Democratic socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has accused Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg of pushing Republican philosophy when it comes to the topic of free education. AOC, who has been a big fan of presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders in the past, is a huge supporter of tuition-free university along with the cancellation of student debt. Sanders is also a big proponent of both of those policies. Here's more from Washington Examiner: In a campaign video tweeted out on Thursday, Buttigieg agreed that college should be "affordable for everybody," but questioned the feasibility of implementing a tuition-free system for all. "There are some voices saying, 'well that doesn't count unless you go even further, unless it's free even for the kids of millionaires,' but I only want to make promises that we can keep," the South Bend, Indiana, mayor stated.

Pete and Chasten Buttigieg's em Other /em Potential First: a White House App Marriage
It's common knowledge that Barack Obama met the woman who eventually became his wife, Michelle Robinson, when he came to work at her law firm as a summer associate. George W. Bush met the future Mrs. Bush, who was Laura Welch back then, at a barbecue and took her mini-golfing the next day. And we all remember that Bill and Hillary Clinton were law school sweethearts. The historical record is full of these president-and-first-lady origin stories: Harry Truman was just 6 when he met the woman he would go on to marry, in church. So it's only natural to ask how the current crop of presidential candidates' how-they-met stories stack up.

'Too complex to fly'? Trump riff on planes shows aversion to technological change and science
He has demanded "goddamned steam" to power the Navy's aircraft carriers and prefers a wall to drones and other technology to secure the country's southern border. He has rejected the scientific consensus on climate change and repeatedly, wrongly, pointed to occasional wintry weather as proof that he's right. And this week, amid a safety scare involving Boeing's 737 MAX 8 and MAX 9 airplanes, President Trump complained that modern jets are "too complex to fly." He added: "I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better."
