Waymo Is Suing People Who Allegedly Smashed and Slashed Its Robotaxis

WIRED

The people of San Francisco haven't always been kind to Waymo's growing fleet of driverless taxis. The autonomous vehicles, which provide tens of thousands of rides each week, have been torched, stomped on, and verbally berated in recent months. Now Waymo is striking back--in the courts. This month, the Silicon Valley company filed a pair of lawsuits, neither of which have been previously reported, that demand hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages from two alleged vandals. Waymo attorneys said in court papers that the alleged vandalism, which ruined dozens of tires and a tail end, are a significant threat to the company's reputation.

The Tricky Business of Computing Ethical Values

Slate

An expert in computing responds to Tara Isabella Burton's "I Know Thy Works." In 2018 researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab, Harvard University, the University of British Columbia, and Université Toulouse Capitole shared the results of one of the largest moral experiments conducted to date. They recorded 40 million ethical decisions from millions of people across 233 countries. The experiment's "Moral Machine" posed to users variations of the classic trolley problem, imagining instead the trolley as a self-driving car. Should the car swerve and collide with jaywalking pedestrians or maintain its current trajectory, which would yield inevitable doom for the passengers inside?

Company that launched 2FA is pioneering AI for digital identity

#artificialintelligence

Joe Burton, CEO of digital identity authentication company Telesign, spoke with TechRepublic about how the "fuzzy" realm between statistical analysis and artificial intelligence can fuel global, fast and accurate identity management. Telesign may have been instrumental in the development of two-factor authentication, but it has a marginal share of a market dominated by companies like Persona, OpenID, Okta, Duo Security and LastPass. Burton said the company is looking forward, with big plans to use new technologies and services powered by AI to set itself apart from competitors. A key approach since 2019 has been evolving its Communications Platform-as-a-Service leadership, dispensing with passwords and focusing on mobile numbers for identity verification, data modeling and customized communications. Can you match the car with the director who 'designed' it? AI creates vehicles reflecting filmmakers

Daily Mail - Science & tech

If the world's most famous film directors designed a car, what would it look like? Thanks to artificial intelligence, we now have the answer. A car scrap collection firm based in the UK used DALL-E-2 - an AI platform that creates images based on text inputs - to imagine what cars designed by Wes Anderson, Christopher Nolan, Alfred Hitchcock and James Cameron, among others, would look like. The results show how powerful this particular artificial intelligence system, which was built by OpenAI, can be when given this type of assignment. British-born director Christopher Nolan is recognized for his work on the Batman trilogy as well as films like Interstellar, which explored many quantum physics themes, and the World War II film Dunkirk.

Funko moves into video games with former Traveller's Tales developers

Engadget

Funko, which is best known for its Pop vinyl figurines, is about to venture into new territory. The studio is led by Jon Burton, the founder of Traveller's Tales and TT Games. "By partnering with 10:10 Games and utilizing the best creators in the business, we will have the talent to deliver games that reflect Funko's unique look and feel across its lines and varied products," Funko CEO Andrew Perlmutter said in a statement. The first game under the partnership is an action platformer that's coming to PC and consoles in 2023. Funko says the untitled game will have "major third-party studio integration," which probably shouldn't be a big shock given the high-profile licensing deals Funko has for collectibles and Burton's experience with the various Lego games.
