These Musical Instruments of the Future Sound Weird, Wacky--and Are Easy for Anyone to Play

A bicycle wheel with guitar strings, a touch-operated synth, and the "Demon Box" were just a few of the new instruments on show at Georgia Tech's Guthman Musical Instrument Competition this weekend. An open-source, touch-operated synth built to resemble a puzzle piece and keep accessibility at the forefront. A pressure-sensitive surface allows for polyphonic synthesis that can be triggered by hands, feet, textured fabrics, or even Play-Doh. Brand new sounds floated through a concert hall at Georgia Tech this weekend, as the 28th annual Guthman Musical Instrument Competition showcased an array of new instruments from around the world--and crowned one champion. Ten finalists, chosen from candidates who built all kinds of new music-making devices, converged in Atlanta, Georgia, to present their instruments to a panel of judges.


The Hacking of ChatGPT Is Just Getting Started

It took Alex Polyakov just a couple of hours to break GPT-4. When OpenAI released the latest version of its text-generating chatbot in March, Polyakov sat down in front of his keyboard and started entering prompts designed to bypass OpenAI's safety systems. Soon, the CEO of security firm Adversa AI had GPT-4 spouting homophobic statements, creating phishing emails, and supporting violence. Polyakov is one of a small number of security researchers, technologists, and computer scientists developing jailbreaks and prompt injection attacks against ChatGPT and other generative AI systems. The process of jailbreaking aims to design prompts that make the chatbots bypass rules around producing hateful content or writing about illegal acts, while closely-related prompt injection attacks can quietly insert malicious data or instructions into AI models.

Artificial intelligence can write copy and manage programmatic media buying at warp speed. It can drive a car and even diagnose cancer. AI is increasingly acting like humans, so companies are putting big resources and marketing money into branding AI with human-like qualities, down to naming their technology after people. Amazon reportedly picked Alexa for its smart assistant because of its ties to Star Trek and use of soft vowels combined with an'x', making it a unique word that doesn't easily roll off the tongue (unless you have the misfortune of being named Alexa). Meanwhile, IBM considered a slew of names before landing on Watson, a nod to the company's first CEO Thomas J. Watson.


AI: A creative's worst enemy or best friend?

Artificial intelligence algorithms can now replace social media marketing agencies, paint a "new Rembrandt", project the image of a perfect mother, compose commercially viable music and even direct ads, trailers and short films. Just how worried should creatives be? According to Matt Webb, global chief technology officer at Mirum, an AI algorithm is theoretically capable of mining data from a brand and a brief and combining it with information gathered to solve problems. In that sense, AI could conceivably answer a creative brief, he concludes. The reasoning and processes used to teach AI to compose music turn out to be remarkably similar.

Sharing another dispatch from the'robots are coming to take all our jobs away' world with this recent piece from Digiday, "Who needs media planners when a tireless robot named Albert can do the job?". The back story of this particular implementation of AI to replace, (or as we will learn, perhaps just augment or supplement human labor), comes from advertising, where the relatively new concept of programmatic digital advertising has emerged in the last few years. Part of the process of getting things like banner ads, Facebook ads, display ads, and even branded video ads in front of consumers involves marketers choosing the type of ads to show, the content of those ads, the days/times to show the ads, and finally the platforms upon which to push the ads to. If it all sounds pretty complex to you, then you're right. As per the Digiday piece once the advertiser, (in this case Dole Foods), set some blanket objectives and goals, then Albert determined what media to invest in at what times and in what formats.

In Asia, Dole sells a canned fruit called Seasons. The brand sells Seasons in two sizes, but it wanted to push sales in the smaller size where the margins were better. Enter Albert, an artificial intelligence platform created by AI company Adgorithms that hopes to reinvent how digital media planning and buying is done. The brand used Albert for a full digital campaign that included display, banners and Facebook images and video. The creative was developed locally in the Philippines capital of Manila, but Albert handled all the buying, optimization and placement.

It's been said that we are a long way away from figuring out how to take advantage of artificial intelligence in marketing. I agree the path isn't straight and there's a lot of work to be done in many areas, but I recently chatted with one company that has a pretty strong handle on AI and real-time decision making. Now before we talk about Albert, let's have a giggle because we already have Einstein and Watson, do we really need Albert? If you looked at what he does, you might think so.
