Esmail added that the show features different stages of Elliot's (Rami Malek) battle with a mental disorder. "The Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) character has to reflect what stage Elliot is in, and how to handle that disorder," Esmail said. "The second season was about the battle." He explained that since Elliot didn't want to have Mr. Robot in his life anymore, this made Mr. Robot extremely agitated.
