This work focuses on classification over time series data. When a time series is generated by non-stationary phenomena, the pattern relating the series with the class to be predicted may evolve over time (concept drift). Consequently, predictive models aimed to learn this pattern may become eventually obsolete, hence failing to sustain performance levels of practical use. To overcome this model degradation, online learning methods incrementally learn from new data samples arriving over time, and accommodate eventual changes along the data stream by implementing assorted concept drift strategies. In this manuscript we elaborate on the suitability of online learning methods to predict the road congestion level based on traffic speed time series data. We draw interesting insights on the performance degradation when the forecasting horizon is increased. As opposed to what is done in most literature, we provide evidence of the importance of assessing the distribution of classes over time before designing and tuning the learning model. This previous exercise may give a hint of the predictability of the different congestion levels under target. Experimental results are discussed over real traffic speed data captured by inductive loops deployed over Seattle (USA). Several online learning methods are analyzed, from traditional incremental learning algorithms to more elaborated deep learning models. As shown by the reported results, when increasing the prediction horizon, the performance of all models degrade severely due to the distribution of classes along time, which supports our claim about the importance of analyzing this distribution prior to the design of the model.

This review has been written with the intention of not only providing you with my opinion of the course but also to provide an insight into the topics covered and teach some of the key concepts. The Advanced Machine Learning and Signal Processing course was developed by IBM and available on Coursera. It is available as an individual course or as one-part of a four-part massive open online course (MOOC), the Advanced Data Science Specialization. The Fundamentals of Scalable Data Science focuses on the basics of Apache Spark in the cloud and acted as an introduction to IBM Watson Studio (IBM's cloud service). In contrast, this course is significantly more in-depth, focusing on more advanced machine learning concepts and signal processing. The course is delivered by two IBM data scientists, Romeo Kienzler and Nickolay Manchev.

It is sad that we are affected by Coronavirus outbreak which has led to schools/colleges being closed, engineering/mba internships being cancelled and job joining being postponed. But, on a positive side we can use this time of crisis to invest in ourselves to hone our skills and prepare for a better tomorrow. Having spent 6 years in the industry as a software developer/product manager and with a decade of experience in Python programming, I want to give back to the community in this time of crisis. I still learn new knowledge everyday with my growing passion in Data Science field. To pursue different career track as a graduating physics student there must be'Why' and'How' questions to be answered. Having been asked by a number of people about my transition from academia -- Physics to Data Science, I hope my story could answer the questions on why I decided to become a Data Scientist and how I pursued the goal, and ultimately encourage as well as inspire more people to pursue their passion.
