Efficient Adaptation in Mixed-Motive Environments via Hierarchical Opponent Modeling and Planning

Despite the recent successes of multi-agent reinforcement learning (MARL) algorithms, efficiently adapting to co-players in mixed-motive environments remains a significant challenge. One feasible approach is to hierarchically model co-players' behavior based on inferring their characteristics. However, these methods often encounter difficulties in efficient reasoning and utilization of inferred information. To address these issues, we propose Hierarchical Opponent modeling and Planning (HOP), a novel multi-agent decision-making algorithm that enables few-shot adaptation to unseen policies in mixed-motive environments. HOP is hierarchically composed of two modules: an opponent modeling module that infers others' goals and learns corresponding goal-conditioned policies, and a planning module that employs Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to identify the best response. Our approach improves efficiency by updating beliefs about others' goals both across and within episodes and by using information from the opponent modeling module to guide planning. Experimental results demonstrate that in mixed-motive environments, HOP exhibits superior few-shot adaptation capabilities when interacting with various unseen agents, and excels in self-play scenarios. Furthermore, the emergence of social intelligence during our experiments underscores the potential of our approach in complex multi-agent environments.


A Quantum Computing Approach for Multi-robot Coverage Path Planning

This paper tackles the multi-vehicle Coverage Path Planning (CPP) problem, crucial for applications like search and rescue or environmental monitoring. Due to its NP-hard nature, finding optimal solutions becomes infeasible with larger problem sizes. This motivates the development of heuristic approaches that enhance efficiency even marginally. We propose a novel approach for exploring paths in a 2D grid, specifically designed for easy integration with the Quantum Alternating Operator Ansatz (QAOA), a powerful quantum heuristic. Our contribution includes: 1) An objective function tailored to solve the multi-vehicle CPP using QAOA. 2) Theoretical proofs guaranteeing the validity of the proposed approach. 3) Efficient construction of QAOA operators for practical implementation. 4) Resource estimation to assess the feasibility of QAOA execution. 5) Performance comparison against established algorithms like the Depth First Search. This work paves the way for leveraging quantum computing in optimizing multi-vehicle path planning, potentially leading to real-world advancements in various applications.


High-Precision, Fair University Course Scheduling During a Pandemic

Scheduling university courses is extra challenging when classroom capacities are reduced because of social distancing requirements that are implemented in response to a pandemic such as COVID-19. In this work, we propose an expanded taxonomy of course delivery modes, present an integer program, and develop a course scheduling algorithm to enable all course sections -- even the largest -- to have a significant classroom learning component during a pandemic. Our approach is fair by ensuring that a certain fraction of the instruction in every course section occurs in the classroom. Unlike previous studies, we do not allow rotating attendance and instead require simultaneous attendance in which all students in a section meet in 1-5 rooms at the same time but less often than in a normal semester. These mass meetings, which create opportunities for in-person midterm exams and group activities, are scheduled at high precision across all days of the semester rather than a single, repeating week. A fast heuristic algorithm makes the schedule in an hour. Results: We consider the 1834 in-person course sections, 172 classrooms, and 96 days in the fall 2022 semester at [UniversityXYZ]. If average classroom capacity is reduced by 75% due to a pandemic, our approach still allows at least 25% of the instruction in every section, and more than 49% of all instruction across the entire campus, to be in the classroom. Our method also produces excellent results for regular classroom assignment. Managerial implications: An algorithm based on the principles of fairness and simultaneous attendance can significantly improve university course schedules during a pandemic and in normal times. High-precision schedules that prepare a campus for various pandemic possibilities can be created with minimal administrative effort and activated at a moment's notice before or during a semester if an outbreak occurs.


Do Zombies Understand? A Choose-Your-Own-Adventure Exploration of Machine Cognition

Recent advances in LLMs have sparked a debate on whether they understand text. In this position paper, we argue that opponents in this debate hold different definitions for understanding, and particularly differ in their view on the role of consciousness. To substantiate this claim, we propose a thought experiment involving an open-source chatbot $Z$ which excels on every possible benchmark, seemingly without subjective experience. We ask whether $Z$ is capable of understanding, and show that different schools of thought within seminal AI research seem to answer this question differently, uncovering their terminological disagreement. Moving forward, we propose two distinct working definitions for understanding which explicitly acknowledge the question of consciousness, and draw connections with a rich literature in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience.


Homotopic Path Set Planning for Robot Manipulation and Navigation

This paper addresses path set planning that yields important applications in robot manipulation and navigation such as path generation for deformable object keypoints and swarms. A path set refers to the collection of finite agent paths to represent the overall spatial path of a group of keypoints or a swarm, whose collective properties meet spatial and topological constraints. As opposed to planning a single path, simultaneously planning multiple paths with constraints poses nontrivial challenges in complex environments. This paper presents a systematic planning pipeline for homotopic path sets, a widely applicable path set class in robotics. An extended visibility check condition is first proposed to attain a sparse passage distribution amidst dense obstacles. Passage-aware optimal path planning compatible with sampling-based planners is then designed for single path planning with adjustable costs. Large accessible free space for path set accommodation can be achieved by the planned path while having a sufficiently short path length. After specifying the homotopic properties of path sets, path set generation based on deformable path transfer is proposed in an efficient centralized manner. The effectiveness of these methods is validated by extensive simulated and experimental results.


Collision and Obstacle Avoidance for Industrial Autonomous Vehicles -- Simulation and Experimentation Based on a Cooperative Approach

One of the challenges of Industry 4.0, is to determine and optimize the flow of data, products and materials in manufacturing companies. To realize these challenges, many solutions have been defined such as the utilization of automated guided vehicles (AGVs). However, being guided is a handicap for these vehicles to fully meet the requirements of Industry 4.0 in terms of adaptability and flexibility: the autonomy of vehicles cannot be reduced to predetermined trajectories. Therefore, it is necessary to develop their autonomy. This will be possible by designing new generations of industrial autonomous vehicles (IAVs), in the form of intelligent and cooperative autonomous mobile robots.In the field of road transport, research is very active to make the car autonomous. Many algorithms, solving problematic traffic situations similar to those that can occur in an industrial environment, can be transposed in the industrial field and therefore for IAVs. The technologies standardized in dedicated bodies (e.g., ETSI TC ITS), such as those concerning the exchange of messages between vehicles to increase their awareness or their ability to cooperate, can also be transposed to the industrial context. The deployment of intelligent autonomous vehicle fleets raises several challenges: acceptability by employees, vehicle location, traffic fluidity, vehicle perception of changing environments (dynamic), vehicle-infrastructure cooperation, or vehicles heterogeneity. In this context, developing the autonomy of IAVs requires a relevant working method. The identification of reusable or adaptable algorithms to the various problems raised by the increase in the autonomy of IAVs is not sufficient, it is also necessary to be able to model, to simulate, to test and to experiment with the proposed solutions. Simulation is essential since it allows both to adapt and to validate the algorithms, but also to design and to prepare the experiments.To improve the autonomy of a fleet, we consider the approach relying on a collective intelligence to make the behaviours of vehicles adaptive. In this chapter, we will focus on a class of problems faced by IAVs related to collision and obstacle avoidance. Among these problems, we are particularly interested when two vehicles need to cross an intersection at the same time, known as a deadlock situation. But also, when obstacles are present in the aisles and need to be avoided by the vehicles safely.


Revolutionizing Battery Disassembly: The Design and Implementation of a Battery Disassembly Autonomous Mobile Manipulator Robot(BEAM-1)

The efficient disassembly of end-of-life electric vehicle batteries(EOL-EVBs) is crucial for green manufacturing and sustainable development. The current pre-programmed disassembly conducted by the Autonomous Mobile Manipulator Robot(AMMR) struggles to meet the disassembly requirements in dynamic environments, complex scenarios, and unstructured processes. In this paper, we propose a Battery Disassembly AMMR(BEAM-1) system based on NeuralSymbolic AI. It detects the environmental state by leveraging a combination of multi-sensors and neural predicates and then translates this information into a quasi-symbolic space. In real-time, it identifies the optimal sequence of action primitives through LLM-heuristic tree search, ensuring high-precision execution of these primitives. Additionally, it employs positional speculative sampling using intuitive networks and achieves the disassembly of various bolt types with a meticulously designed end-effector. Importantly, BEAM-1 is a continuously learning embodied intelligence system capable of subjective reasoning like a human, and possessing intuition. A large number of real scene experiments have proved that it can autonomously perceive, decide, and execute to complete the continuous disassembly of bolts in multiple, multi-category, and complex situations, with a success rate of 98.78%. This research attempts to use NeuroSymbolic AI to give robots real autonomous reasoning, planning, and learning capabilities. BEAM-1 realizes the revolution of battery disassembly. Its framework can be easily ported to any robotic system to realize different application scenarios, which provides a ground-breaking idea for the design and implementation of future embodied intelligent robotic systems.


Perceive With Confidence: Statistical Safety Assurances for Navigation with Learning-Based Perception

Rapid advances in perception have enabled large pre-trained models to be used out of the box for transforming high-dimensional, noisy, and partial observations of the world into rich occupancy representations. However, the reliability of these models and consequently their safe integration onto robots remains unknown when deployed in environments unseen during training. In this work, we address this challenge by rigorously quantifying the uncertainty of pre-trained perception systems for object detection via a novel calibration technique based on conformal prediction. Crucially, this procedure guarantees robustness to distribution shifts in states when perceptual outputs are used in conjunction with a planner. As a result, the calibrated perception system can be used in combination with any safe planner to provide an end-to-end statistical assurance on safety in unseen environments. We evaluate the resulting approach, Perceive with Confidence (PwC), in simulation and on hardware where a quadruped robot navigates through previously unseen indoor, static environments. These experiments validate the safety assurances for obstacle avoidance provided by PwC and demonstrate up to $40\%$ improvements in empirical safety compared to baselines.


Autonomous Mobile Robot Navigation: Tracking problem

This paper presents a study on autonomous robot navigation, focusing on three key behaviors: Odometry, Target Tracking, and Obstacle Avoidance. Each behavior is described in detail, along with experimental setups for simulated and real-world environments. Odometry utilizes wheel encoder data for precise navigation along predefined paths, validated through experiments with a Pioneer robot. Target Tracking employs vision-based techniques for pursuing designated targets while avoiding obstacles, demonstrated on the same platform. Obstacle Avoidance utilizes ultrasonic sensors to navigate cluttered environments safely, validated in both simulated and real-world scenarios. Additionally, the paper extends the project to include an Elegoo robot car, leveraging its features for enhanced experimentation. Through advanced algorithms and experimental validations, this study provides insights into developing robust navigation systems for autonomous robots.


Path Planning for a Cooperative Navigation Aid Vehicle to Assist Multiple Agents Sequentially

This paper considers planning a path for a single underwater cooperative navigation aid (CNA) vehicle to sequentially aid a set of N agents to minimize average navigation uncertainty. Both the CNA and agents are modeled as constant-velocity vehicles. The agents travel along known nominal trajectories and the CNA plans a path to sequentially intercept them. Navigation aiding is modeled by a scalar discrete time Kalman filter. During path planning, the CNA considers surfacing to reduce its own navigation uncertainty. A greedy planning algorithm is proposed that uses a heuristic to schedule agents to the CNA that is based on the optimal time-to-aid, the overall navigation uncertainty reduction, and the transit time. The approach is compared to an optimal (exhaustive enumeration) algorithm through a Monte Carlo experiment with randomized agent trajectories and initial navigation uncertainty.
