Vinci's smart headphones play music, no phone required

Engadget

It was inevitable that voice-controlled headphones would one day land on our heads. With Siri and Alexa answering our questions and cueing up music for our ears, it was only a matter of time until something like the Vinci smart headphones appeared. Available for pre-order on Kickstarter, it can play music, act as an activity tracker, get directions, read back text messages and more wirelessly via WiFi or a 3G connection. And that's without being connected to a smartphone. Over time, too, the company says that Vinci will learn about your behaviors and begin telling you when things like your usual bus will be late or suggestion songs via AI.

Hyundai adds Amazon's Alexa to its Blue Link connected cars

Engadget

If you own a 2016 Hyundai, you won't have to -- at least if you have an Amazon Echo at home. The car-maker has baked Amazon's Alexa virtual assistant into its Blue Link connected car app. This means you can start your car, and set the temperature (among other things) from the warm embrace of your comforter using just your voice starting today. Hyundai isn't the first to think about connecting its cars to Amazon's smarthome kit. Back at CES in January, Ford announced it'd be integrating Alexa with its SYNC platform.

The 4 levels of bots: How to stop worrying and love AI

#artificialintelligence

It's been hard to ignore bots and virtual assistants lately. Google is integrating its Google Assistant into its smartphones, home devices, and Allo messaging service. Amazon's smart-home Echo device is becoming an "unlikely hit" among American households, selling an estimated 3 million devices since its launch in 2014. And, of course, every day sees a new article about a new bot service, smart messaging service, or digital virtual assistant. In the coverage of bots and AI, however, everything seems to bleed together -- AI, chatbots, personal assistants, voice control, and self-driving cars.

Amazon Echo Dot (2nd generation) review: This is the Echo most people should buy

PCWorld

When I reviewed the Amazon Echo 13 months ago, I predicted that people would want one in every room. The Echo can control your home's lighting, play music, estimate your commute time, operate a timer, answer trivia questions, read books and news bulletins to you, tell you which movies are at your local theater, and so much more. You can order a pizza from Dominoes, a ride from Uber, or virtually anything from Amazon. You'd want one in every room so you didn't need to walk to the room it was in to use it, or yell "Alexa!" from across the house to get its attention. I'm sure Amazon loved my idea, but it was never going to happen on a broad scale at $180 a pop.

The Inside Story Behind Tinder's New Gender Options

TIME - Tech

Since the popular dating app Tinder launched in 2012, new users have been given two options to describe themselves when they sign up: male or female. But that seemingly simple question presented a conundrum for people like Liz Busillo, a graphic designer in Philadelphia who identifies as agender--meaning Busillo identifies as neither a man, nor a woman. "I figured, I present in a way that's very feminine, so I'll just put down female and clarify in my profile," says Busillo, who uses the singular pronoun they. What ensued was a slew of negative interactions, mostly with straight men, including aggression, harassment, and someone reporting their profile for being "fake." Many other transgender and gender non-conforming Tinder users have reported similar experiences on a platform where gender was presumed to be as straightforward as swiping left or right.
