Siri disappoints again, this time with apps

#artificialintelligence

Apple in 2016 opened up Siri to bring the personal assistant to apps, but few developers have signed on. While Apple says Siri works with YouTube, the results are wanting: Ask Siri to play a specific YouTube playlist, it tells you it can't find that playlist in your Apple Music. Slow uptake by app developers risks further denting Siri's credibility, already bruised by the growth of Alexa and the ambitious advance of rival Google Assistant on Android phones and the Google Home speaker. On Apple's Siri web page, the company lists under 100 possibilities to use Siri, from setting calendar appointments, searching photos on Pinterest and booking rides on Lyft.

Amazon's Alexa lands on the HTC U11, and it works like it should

Engadget

As promised, HTC is finally making it possible for owners of its U11 smartphone to install Amazon's Alexa. Starting today, those in the US who need yet another voice interface can download the HTC Alexa app from the Google Play Store -- we're told localized versions of Alexa are coming to other countries in the coming weeks. For those keeping count, that brings the U11's virtual assistant count to three: Google Assistant is also on-board, along with HTC's non-chatty Sense Companion. Unsurprisingly, the company doesn't think three assistants are overkill. VP of product planing Nigel Newby-House sees these three options as complementary, and on some level, he's got a point.

Don't allow Siri to become your new BFF

#artificialintelligence

Everyone, from tech powerhouses to startups to Hollywood, has pondered this existential question. If you take a look at AI products coming out of Silicon Valley, you'd assume consumers don't just want Siri to tell them the weather, they want Siri to be their friend.

10 Powerful Examples Of Artificial Intelligence In Use Today

#artificialintelligence

The machines haven't taken over. However, they are seeping their way into our lives, affecting how we live, work and entertain ourselves. From voice-powered personal assistants like Siri and Alexa, to more underlying and fundamental technologies such as behavioral algorithms, suggestive searches and autonomously-powered self-driving vehicles boasting powerful predictive capabilities, there are several examples and applications of artificial intellgience in use today. However, the technology is still in its infancy. What many companies are calling A.I. today, aren't necessarily so.

An Amazon Echo Can't Call the Police--But Maybe It Should

WIRED

Despite what you may have heard, an Amazon Echo did not call the police earlier this week, when it heard a husband threatening his wife with a gun in New Mexico. On Monday, news reports took Bernalillo County authorities' version of those events credulously, heralding the home assistant as a hero. The alleged act also raised an important question: Do you really want to live in a world where Alexa listens to your conversations, and calls the cops if she thinks things are getting out of hand? The good news is that you don't live in that world. Amazon's Alexa can't, and did not, call 911.

Imitation of Intelligence : Exploring Artificial Intelligence! - Home

What is the difference between "calculate" and "compute"? But this is something out of curiosity about the crux of what we are going to go through. So, the calculation involves an arithmetic process. Computation is involved in the implementation of non-arithmetic steps of the algorithm which actually brings things up to the calculation. You got the idea where I am going with this right?

We're all cyborgs, and AI assistants will make us more human

#artificialintelligence

In the classic 1980s dystopian sci-fi movieRoboCop, mortally wounded Detroit police officer Alex Murphy is reborn as a cyborg when his brain is implanted in a fully mechanical body. He comes back better and stronger than ever, so good at his job that later in the film, his fellow human officers go on strike to protest robots taking their jobs. Being part man and part machine, Murphy melds the street smarts and instincts of a human officer with the strength, stamina, and durability of a machine to become a more effective cop. We're not particularly close to having the technology that would make that kind of robot-human hybrid possible, but what if I told you we'realreadycyborgs? It's true. Humans have been using technology to augment our biology for millennia, and AI is going to accelerate this trend.

ING Direct prepares to unleash banking chatbots on social media

#artificialintelligence

Customers of ING Direct may soon be able to ask their "digital assistant" to check their bank balance, or tell a "chatbot" on Twitter to freeze a credit card that has gone missing. As banks grapple with the mobile revolution, the online bank is preparing for what some in the technology world think could be an even bigger change: the rise of artificial intelligence. By the end of this year, it expects to be capable of unleashing chatbots on Twitter, Facebook, and Google's Assistant, which is the tech giant's answer to Apple's digital assistant, Siri. While many banks are active on social media, and other Australian banks are also working with chatbots, ING says its new wave of bots are different because they will be able to talk to customers in in everyday, jargon-free language. Recently appointed chief information officer, Ani Paul, said customers would be able to ask the chatbot questions such as "How much money do I have in my account," or "Am I broke yet?"

Artificial intelligence turns critical for banks facing nimble fintech rivals - The Financial Technologist

#artificialintelligence

When Swedbank customers face a problem, they reach out to Nina, the bank's virtual assistant. Visitors to Mizuho Bank are greeted by Pepper, a humanoid robot standing four feet tall. Santander allows payments to be activated by voice, and JP Morgan Chase now uses machine learning to review commercial loan agreements in seconds, a task that used to take 3,60,000 manhours every year. Wherever you look in the world of financial services, you will find some form of artificial intelligence (AI) at work. AI technologies such as machine learning and speech recognition are quietly working behind the scenes to improve lending decisions and prevent fraud.

Huawei will combine CPU, GPU and AI functions in a chip launching later this year

#artificialintelligence

Huawei is gearing up to launch an application processor that combines CPU (central processing unit), GPU (graphics processing unit) and AI (artificial intelligence) functions, according to a report from DigiTimes. Huawei Consumer Business Group CEO Richard Yu discussed the plans during the 2017 China Internet Conference in Beijing which started earlier this week. Yu stated that the new processor would debut in the second half of the year, though he didn't go into specifics about what the AI component of the chip would allow for (CPU and GPU have been being built into the same SoC since 2010). Yu did mention, however, that Huawei's EMUI interface supported "deep machine learning and smart computing capability," said DigiTimes. Which CPU and GPU will feature in this new chip is an interesting question.
