The iOS 11 Features We're Most Excited About

TIME - Tech

To highlight just two: iPhone owners will no longer have to dig through their photo gallery to send or edit a screenshot, and the iPad's multitasking sidebar can now be moved to the other side of the screen. Other changes are more than mere convenience-boosters, too. A few additions aim to change the way users interact with apps, while others make the iPad better-equipped to function as a laptop replacement. Here's a breakdown of the features we're most excited to see. Apple's popular voice assistant is getting a major makeover in iOS 11.

4 Promising Ways AI Is Helping Diversity In Recruitment

#artificialintelligence

The role that AI plays in diversity in recruitment is still being debated. Critics of AI are worried it will replicate human biases that already exist. Supporters believe AI can help us avoid unconscious bias and increase diversity in recruitment. I'm biased (of course), but I'm a supporter of using AI in recruiting. Here's why: knowing AI has the potential to replicate an existing bias means we can monitor for it.

Future of Website Designing & Development: Artificial Intelligence

#artificialintelligence

Internet is a fun place to be a part of. From an item as tiny as a pin to an item as big as an airplane (in-case you are a billionaire), you are just one click away from getting it delivered to you. The design of your website is important as it is your door to their interest. A user takes only 4 to 6 seconds to decide whether they are going to continue browsing your site or not. You need to take note that you are communicating with your prospective customers through your website.

American Smart Homes Survey: Trends & Statistics on Automation

Consumers also have the option of managing devices through smart home hubs such as those offered by Samsung SmartThings, Amazon Echo, and Google Home, which allow owners to monitor any type of connected device through a single interface. However, ReportLinker found that few respondents – just 9% – say they use such hubs. This could change, however, if it becomes more convenient to control home devices from your smartphone. Both Google and Apple have developed all-in-one apps that enable consumers to operate multiple smart devices right from a single app on a smartphone or tablet.

Slater and Gordon: Brits use dating apps in relationships

Daily Mail - Science & tech

It seems window shopping on Tinder is becoming as common as scrolling through Instagram, even among those who are off the market. According to new research, 35 per cent of British people still use dating apps when in a relationship. Despite the shocking stastistic, one in five of the 2,100 people surveyed by specialist law firm Slater and Gordon said this is just part and parcel of the modern day dating life and they'wouldn't mind' if their partner used a dating app. The younger generations seemed even more accepting with two thirds of 16-24 years old admitting they would happily forgive their other-half if they found them checking out other'options' online. Just under half of the men (46 per cent) who were surveyed admitted to using the modern dating tool while in a relationship.

New Google Street View Cameras Will Fuel AI Assistants

#artificialintelligence

Everyone's favorite creepy Google tool is about to help Google get even creepier. Wired reports that the cameras Google uses to create imagery on its Street View service have gotten their first upgrade in eight years. Now, the vehicles use eight cameras to capture sharper images of the roads, a rig better suited to 2017 than 2009. But perhaps the most important cameras on the vehicles are the two high-definition units facing perpendicular to the direction of travel. Those units record images of stores, road signs, and other objects at the side of the road in incredible detail--and information gleaned from the data will feed Google's ever-hungry machine-learning algorithms.

Tinder Date Gets Trapped In Window While Trying To Grab Her Poop

International Business Times

Fire fighters rescued a woman who got trapped in a window while she attempted to retrieve feces she allegedly tossed out of her Tinder date's window, according to reports. She apparently tried to discard the feces after it failed to flush down the toilet. Liam Smith from Bristol, England started an online fundraising page to cover the damages his date allegedly caused to his apartment window. The two apparently met through the dating app Tinder and had retired back to Smith's apartment after a trip to a local restaurant, according to Smith's fundraising page. Local firefighting squad Avon Fire and Rescue confirmed to local newspaper Bristol Post that they received a call on Aug. 7 to Smith's address.

The rise of AI

#artificialintelligence

From virtual assistants to driverless cars, technology imitating human intelligence is on the rise. But at what ethical cost and how do boards future-proof their organisations in the face of rapid change? Earlier this year, a Japanese insurance company made headlines for doing something that company executives and directors around the world have been anticipating - and fearing - for years. Fukoku Mutual Life Insurance made 34 of its staff redundant and replaced them with artificial intelligence (AI) system IBM Watson. Japanese newspaper The Mainichi reported the company will be using Watson to determine payout amounts and check customer cases against their insurance contracts. Other Japanese insurance companies have announced they are looking at or are already using AI for similar purposes and The Japan Times reported in April that the country's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry was planning to trial AI to help government workers write draft answers for questions put to Cabinet ministers.

Alexa will recommend third-party skills for things it can't do

Engadget

When Amazon's Alexa doesn't know how the answer to a question, the digital assistant typically just says so. I don't know that," Alexa may start to recommend third-party skills to help you out more effectively. In a video shot by Voicebot's Bret Kinsella, you can clearly hear Alexa recommending a non-Amazon skill to answer his question about Apple stock prices. According to Kinsella, after Alexa asked if he wanted to use a skill to answer his stock query, it went straight to a genera listing of prices instead of addressing the specific question he originally asked. It's clear from Kinsella's video that this new behavior is still hit-or-miss, but it does make a lot of sense. If Alexa can't figure out what you need, then surely there's a skill that might. Instead of having users find a skill that might have the answer, Alexa can do most of the heavy lifting in finding an appropriate one. As TechCrunch notes, Google Assistant can already recommend apps to users when the app developers tell Google what kind of actions it can handle. How this works with Alexa and when it will roll out to all users is still unclear, however. When reached for comment, Amazon said, "In limited scenarios, Alexa will suggest skills that may be helpful to answer a customer's question.
