FDA-approved robot assistant gives surgeons force feedback
Surgeons are trained to accurately operate on you when you need it, but robotic assistants could help them get to hard-to-reach areas and boost their accuracy even more. Senhance, the robotic surgical assistant that has just earned the FDA's approval, was designed to accomplish both of those. The machine can help surgeons carry out minimally invasive surgery -- in fact, the FDA has approved its use because after a pilot test involving 150 patients, the agency has concluded that Senhance is as accurate as the da Vinci robot when it came to gynecological and colorectal procedures. According to TransEnterix, the company that developed the machine, it's the first surgical assistant for the abdominal area to get the FDA's approval since 2000. The company claims it's also the first one with eye tracking and force feedback.

And opposed to the common perception the ultimate goal is not necessarily to create a human-like robot that will replace human workforce: AI is the imitation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems โ and these processes include learning, reasoning or self-correction (SearchCIO). Coming back to Masayoshi's vision at the MWC to emphasize the forecasted enhancement in AI capabilities: He elaborates that the human brain consist of around 30 billion connected neurons โ with transistors in chips as the technological equivalent surpassing 30 billion in 2018. More widely known digital assistants include Amazon's Alexa or Google Home, which continue to implement additional skills to be applied in more and more use cases. But even though the before mentioned AI virtual digital assistants are a first step into that direction, telcos need to come up with a strong strategy and knowledge base to understand and utilize AI.
Taechyon's 'Septaer' Breaks the Mold of the Talking AI Speaker Gold Rush - Cerebral-Overload
Septaer is designed to be viewed from any side with its omni-directional display technology and has large high-end speakers to let users control room ambiance and environmental lighting according to a user's mood. Septaer will offer the current smart speaker AI capabilities of an Alexa, Google Home or Cortana, as well as Septaer-to-Septaer full room video conferencing, entertainment and sharing of user-created interactive characters and content. "Instead of everyone staring at a TV or phone screen, users will be facing each other when interacting with the Septaer instead of looking away from each other. Modern games can be played as the centerpiece of the table like traditional board games. Other flat-screen devices seem to pull attention away from family interaction. I am hoping families facing each other interacting with a single device viewable from all sides will bring families closer together," said Steve Favis, CTO of Taechyon Robotics Corporation.
Top Google Scientist Says We Need To Emphasize Humanity While
One of the biggest companies focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) is Google, a company many only associate with the popular search engine. The company's has been developing AI over the years, which can be seen in some of its current products: Google Assistant, which came to Android smartphones in February; AI assisting the aforementioned search engine helping with job searches; and the Google Home smart speaker. The AI may not be as smart as a first grader yet, but it has the potential to reach a point where it's smarter than the average person interacting with it. To reach that point, however, AI may need to become more human-like. At least, that's what Google Cloud Chief Scientist and Director of the Stanford Artificial Intelligence and Vision Labs Fei-Fei Li believes.

Are you a veteran of L.A.'s current dating scene? Even in the New Los Angeles, with Lyft and Uber giving us cheaper rides and two-thirds of voters passing Measure M, dating without a car is still playing the game with a serious handicap. "I don't mind that you don't drive," a woman I'd been dating for six months told me last year as she drove us to dinner at Broken Spanish for my birthday. L.A. Affairs chronicles the current dating scene in and around Los Angeles.
Have a High-Tech Halloween With Your Own Haunted Smart Home
The holiday season is in full swing, which means we're all whipping out our decorations and decking our homes out for the festivities ahead. That means it's time to get your spook on. Between monstrous masks that evoke the horror icons who haunt our nightmares (thanks, Chucky), and our favorite home decor (like dangling skeletons and that cobweb gunk you can never seem to fully scrape off), you've got plenty of ways to make your house the scariest on the block. But it's 2017, and you don't need to pull out all your decorations just to get in the Halloween spirit. We're living in the future, and all you need is a smart speaker like Google Home or Amazon Echo and a few connected devices to transform any pad into a creepy crypt fit for the damned.
Comparing Alexa, Google Assistant, Cortana and Siri smart speakers
The smart home assistant race has been building to a fever pitch over the course of the last couple of years. Things really came to head this past two weeks, when Amazon, Google and Sonos all held big events highlighting their latest smart speaker plays, making the already busy field a heck of a lot more crowded.

With this in mind, how might artificial intelligence (AI) affect the world of retirement accounts, specifically defined contribution (DC) plans? With fee transparency, few surviving providers, and robos directing consumers to the most suitable investment products and strategies, the employer's role in retirement funds will probably diminish. In turn, true personal pension accounts, akin to bank accounts, will likely emerge at the expense of company-run plans. He has over a decade of experience in roles spanning product development, consulting, and strategy across the DC landscape.
