Microsoft Commits $40M to Exploration of "AI for Human Good" Use Cases - AI Trends
Microsoft is embarking on a five-year, $40m programme to explore how artificial intelligence (AI) can be used to bolster the response of non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to humanitarian disasters. The AI for Humanitarian Action programme will focus on using AI technologies to assist select NGOs throughout the world working on projects in four key areas. These include NGOs and humanitarian organisations involved in responding to natural disasters, child protection incidents, refugee crisis situations and human rights abuses, who Microsoft will support by offering grants and investments. "While global relief organisations scramble to respond to these events, their work by definition is often reactive and difficult to scale. We believe that technology, like artificial intelligence combined with cloud, can be a game changer, helping save more lives, alleviate suffering and restore human dignity by changing the way frontline relief organisations anticipate, predict and better target response efforts," said Microsoft president, Brad Smith, in a blog post announcing the initiative's launch.
How to Apply Industrial Machine Learning
The concept of machine learning is becoming better understood as we increasingly interact with it every day. From Netflix and Amazon recommendations, to Siri and Cortana voice recognition to Google Maps travel time calculations, we're all becoming more familiar with machine leaning technologies--even if we don't quite realize it yet. Applying machine learning in industry, however, is a different story. Though several companies are doing it, it's not nearly as ubiquitous as the consumer-oriented applications mentioned above. And that's what made a presentation by Kathy Applebaum and Kevin McClusky of Inductive Automation during the Ignition Community Conference 2018 so interesting.

Microsoft's Windows 10 October 2018 Update, officially released October 2, doesn't offer the standout, marquee features you might have come to expect from earlier releases. But as our review demonstrates, a few new features highlight a longer list of under-the-hood, day-to-day improvements. Our review is based on the final Windows 10 Insider Builds, which led up to the official October 2018 Update. Microsoft doesn't appear to have added anything with the announcement, but we'll check and update this story to reflect any last-minute changes. We've assigned a review score, but, as always, pay less attention to the number than to how the October 2018 Update will affect you.
Google Assistant has bigger images and new interactive elements
While Google Assistant can respond to voice commands, you still probably interact with it by touch on your phone. In fact, the tech giant noticed that nearly half of Assistant interactions use voice and touch, which is why it gave the high-tech helper a makeover with much bigger images and more visuals. If you use the Assistant on your phone to control smart devices, you'll now see new controls, including sliders to adjust your lights' brightness or your speakers' volume. You can now also tweak and personalize any text you ask Assistant to compose and send, thanks to its new interactive messaging interface. Developers can customize what they want you to see within Assistant, as well -- Starbucks, for instance, now displays items on its menu.
How Artificial Intelligence Renders Humanity Useless [INFOGRAPHIC]
Artificial intelligence (also known as AI) is becoming part of our lives increasingly every day. You might use a home assistant like Alexa, Siri on your iPhone, or work in a job that uses elements of AI, chances are you would have encountered it before, whether you realise it or not. In short, AI is software that can learn, adapt and think, similar to the human brain. Get our free ebook on how the Soviet Union became Putin's Russia. But unlike the human brain, AI isn't affected by feelings like boredom, pressure, and fatigue. And that's how it beats humanity -- by remaining untouched by outside influences.
Google preps for Pixel 3, smart display launch with a visual Assistant makeover
In case you haven't heard, Google is holding its annual Pixel event in New York City on Tuesday, and to prepare, it's spending this week getting its apps and services in order. After giving Maps an update with group planning and a new commuter tab, Google is now training its sights on the most important piece of its ecosystem: Google Assistant. While Google Assistant is primarily driven by voice, this update is all about how Assistant looks. Google is calling it "the first major makeover for the Google Assistant on phones," and it brings a sense of unity to our handsets and the smart displays that have been cropping up. In the update rolling out to phones, Google is adding sliders, buttons, pictures, and other visual elements to amp up the Assistant experience.
Philips Hue now supports iOS 12's Siri Shortcuts
With the launch of iOS 12, iPhone owners were introduced to Siri's new Shortcuts feature that makes suggestions based on a user's routines. Numerous third-party apps -- such as Pandora, Evernote and even Google News -- already offer such integration, but one of the most eagerly anticipated platforms, Philips Hue, has been missing. Now, that wait is over -- Philips Hue users with the latest version of the app received Shortcuts support today. The update means that users can activate lighting scenes by using recorded personal phrases. In addition, Siri now learns when certain scenes are used and "suggests them for quick activation on the phone's lock screen, Siri search or Siri watch-face," Philips wrote in its App Store description.
