AI 50 2021: America's Most Promising Artificial Intelligence Companies
The Covid-19 pandemic was devastating for many industries, but it only accelerated the use of artificial intelligence across the U.S. economy. Amid the crisis, companies scrambled to create new services for remote workers and students, beef up online shopping and dining options, make customer call centers more efficient and speed development of important new drugs. Even as applications of machine learning and perception platforms become commonplace, a thick layer of hype and fuzzy jargon clings to AI-enabled software.That makes it tough to identify the most compelling companies in the space--especially those finding new ways to use AI that create value by making humans more efficient, not redundant. With this in mind, Forbes has partnered with venture firms Sequoia Capital and Meritech Capital to create our third annual AI 50, a list of private, promising North American companies that are using artificial intelligence in ways that are fundamental to their operations. To be considered, businesses must be privately-held and utilizing machine learning (where systems learn from data to improve on tasks), natural language processing (which enables programs to "understand" written or spoken language) or computer vision (which relates to how machines "see"). AI companies incubated at, largely funded through or acquired by large tech, manufacturing or industrial firms aren't eligible for consideration. Our list was compiled through a submission process open to any AI company in the U.S. and Canada. The application asked companies to provide details on their technology, business model, customers and financials like funding, valuation and revenue history (companies had the option to submit information confidentially, to encourage greater transparency). Forbes received several hundred entries, of which nearly 400 qualified for consideration. From there, our data partners applied an algorithm to identify 100 companies with the highest quantitative scores--and that also made diversity a priority. Next, a panel of expert AI judges evaluated the finalists to find the 50 most compelling companies (they were precluded from judging companies in which they have a vested interest). Among trends this year are what Sequoia Capital's Konstantine Buhler calls AI workbench companies--building of platforms tailored to different enterprises, including Dataiku, DataRobot Domino Data and Databricks.
Improving Paraphrase Detection with the Adversarial Paraphrasing Task

If two sentences have the same meaning, it should follow that they are equivalent in their inferential properties, i.e., each sentence should textually entail the other. However, many paraphrase datasets currently in widespread use rely on a sense of paraphrase based on word overlap and syntax. Can we teach them instead to identify paraphrases in a way that draws on the inferential properties of the sentences, and is not over-reliant on lexical and syntactic similarities of a sentence pair? We apply the adversarial paradigm to this question, and introduce a new adversarial method of dataset creation for paraphrase identification: the Adversarial Paraphrasing Task (APT), which asks participants to generate semantically equivalent (in the sense of mutually implicative) but lexically and syntactically disparate paraphrases. These sentence pairs can then be used both to test paraphrase identification models (which get barely random accuracy) and then improve their performance. To accelerate dataset generation, we explore automation of APT using T5, and show that the resulting dataset also improves accuracy. We discuss implications for paraphrase detection and release our dataset in the hope of making paraphrase detection models better able to detect sentence-level meaning equivalence.
NG+ : A Multi-Step Matrix-Product Natural Gradient Method for Deep Learning

In this paper, a novel second-order method called NG+ is proposed. By following the rule ``the shape of the gradient equals the shape of the parameter", we define a generalized fisher information matrix (GFIM) using the products of gradients in the matrix form rather than the traditional vectorization. Then, our generalized natural gradient direction is simply the inverse of the GFIM multiplies the gradient in the matrix form. Moreover, the GFIM and its inverse keeps the same for multiple steps so that the computational cost can be controlled and is comparable with the first-order methods. A global convergence is established under some mild conditions and a regret bound is also given for the online learning setting. Numerical results on image classification with ResNet50, quantum chemistry modeling with Schnet, neural machine translation with Transformer and recommendation system with DLRM illustrate that GN+ is competitive with the state-of-the-art methods.
An Empirical Survey of Data Augmentation for Limited Data Learning in NLP

NLP has achieved great progress in the past decade through the use of neural models and large labeled datasets. The dependence on abundant data prevents NLP models from being applied to low-resource settings or novel tasks where significant time, money, or expertise is required to label massive amounts of textual data. Recently, data augmentation methods have been explored as a means of improving data efficiency in NLP. To date, there has been no systematic empirical overview of data augmentation for NLP in the limited labeled data setting, making it difficult to understand which methods work in which settings. In this paper, we provide an empirical survey of recent progress on data augmentation for NLP in the limited labeled data setting, summarizing the landscape of methods (including token-level augmentations, sentence-level augmentations, adversarial augmentations, and hidden-space augmentations) and carrying out experiments on 11 datasets covering topics/news classification, inference tasks, paraphrasing tasks, and single-sentence tasks. Based on the results, we draw several conclusions to help practitioners choose appropriate augmentations in different settings and discuss the current challenges and future directions for limited data learning in NLP.
Common Sense Beyond English: Evaluating and Improving Multilingual Language Models for Commonsense Reasoning

Commonsense reasoning research has so far been limited to English. We aim to evaluate and improve popular multilingual language models (ML-LMs) to help advance commonsense reasoning (CSR) beyond English. We collect the Mickey Corpus, consisting of 561k sentences in 11 different languages, which can be used for analyzing and improving ML-LMs. We propose Mickey Probe, a language-agnostic probing task for fairly evaluating the common sense of popular ML-LMs across different languages. In addition, we also create two new datasets, X-CSQA and X-CODAH, by translating their English versions to 15 other languages, so that we can evaluate popular ML-LMs for cross-lingual commonsense reasoning. To improve the performance beyond English, we propose a simple yet effective method -- multilingual contrastive pre-training (MCP). It significantly enhances sentence representations, yielding a large performance gain on both benchmarks.
To Beam Or Not To Beam: That is a Question of Cooperation for Language GANs

Due to the discrete nature of words, language GANs require to be optimized from rewards provided by discriminator networks, via reinforcement learning methods. This is a much harder setting than for continuous tasks, which enjoy gradient flows from discriminators to generators, usually leading to dramatic learning instabilities. However, we claim that this can be solved by making discriminator and generator networks cooperate to produce output sequences during training. These cooperative outputs, inherently built to obtain higher discrimination scores, not only provide denser rewards for training, but also form a more compact artificial set for discriminator training, hence improving its accuracy and stability. In this paper, we show that our SelfGAN framework, built on this cooperative principle, outperforms Teacher Forcing and obtains state-of-the-art results on two challenging tasks, Summarization and Question Generation.
XtremeDistilTransformers: Task Transfer for Task-agnostic Distillation

While deep and large pre-trained models are the state-of-the-art for various natural language processing tasks, their huge size poses significant challenges for practical uses in resource constrained settings. Recent works in knowledge distillation propose task-agnostic as well as task-specific methods to compress these models, with task-specific ones often yielding higher compression rate. In this work, we develop a new task-agnostic distillation framework XtremeDistilTransformers that leverages the advantage of task-specific methods for learning a small universal model that can be applied to arbitrary tasks and languages. To this end, we study the transferability of several source tasks, augmentation resources and model architecture for distillation. We evaluate our model performance on multiple tasks, including the General Language Understanding Evaluation (GLUE) benchmark, SQuAD question answering dataset and a massive multi-lingual NER dataset with 41 languages. We release three distilled task-agnostic checkpoints with 13MM, 22MM and 33MM parameters obtaining SOTA performance in several tasks.
Vivaldi adds mail, calendar, RSS and translation tools to its privacy-focused browser
Vivaldi has released a major update for its eponymous web browser for privacy-minded power users. Version 4.0 bring with it a translation tool, along with beta versions of Vivaldi Mail, Calendar, and Feed Reader. The update is available now on Windows, Mac and Linux and Android devices. Vivaldi built its translation feature into its browser. The tool is powered by Lingvanex, a Cyprus-based company that makes translator's for a wider range of platforms including voice calls and smartwatches. As part of its focus on privacy, Vivaldi says that all your translation activity will be kept away from third-parties on its servers in Iceland.
Bayesian Attention Belief Networks

Attention-based neural networks have achieved state-of-the-art results on a wide range of tasks. Most such models use deterministic attention while stochastic attention is less explored due to the optimization difficulties or complicated model design. This paper introduces Bayesian attention belief networks, which construct a decoder network by modeling unnormalized attention weights with a hierarchy of gamma distributions, and an encoder network by stacking Weibull distributions with a deterministic-upward-stochastic-downward structure to approximate the posterior. The resulting auto-encoding networks can be optimized in a differentiable way with a variational lower bound. It is simple to convert any models with deterministic attention, including pretrained ones, to the proposed Bayesian attention belief networks. On a variety of language understanding tasks, we show that our method outperforms deterministic attention and state-of-the-art stochastic attention in accuracy, uncertainty estimation, generalization across domains, and robustness to adversarial attacks. We further demonstrate the general applicability of our method on neural machine translation and visual question answering, showing great potential of incorporating our method into various attention-related tasks.
Order-Agnostic Cross Entropy for Non-Autoregressive Machine Translation

We propose a new training objective named order-agnostic cross entropy (OaXE) for fully non-autoregressive translation (NAT) models. OaXE improves the standard cross-entropy loss to ameliorate the effect of word reordering, which is a common source of the critical multimodality problem in NAT. Concretely, OaXE removes the penalty for word order errors, and computes the cross entropy loss based on the best possible alignment between model predictions and target tokens. Since the log loss is very sensitive to invalid references, we leverage cross entropy initialization and loss truncation to ensure the model focuses on a good part of the search space. Extensive experiments on major WMT benchmarks show that OaXE substantially improves translation performance, setting new state of the art for fully NAT models. Further analyses show that OaXE alleviates the multimodality problem by reducing token repetitions and increasing prediction confidence.
