Going Beyond Google: Are Search Engines Ready for JavaScript Crawling & Indexing?
I recently published the results of my JavaScript SEO experiment where I checked which JavaScript frameworks are properly crawled and indexed by Google. The results were shocking; it turns out Google has a number of problems when crawling and indexing JavaScript-rich websites. Google managed to index only a few out of multiple JavaScript frameworks tested. And as I proved, indexing content doesn't always mean crawling JavaScript-generated links. If Google is having problems with JavaScript crawling and indexing, how are Google's smaller competitors dealing with this problem?
Google's exact match close variants expand again: Now include same meaning variations - Search Engine Land
Google's exact match keyword targeting used to mean one thing: the keyword had to match exactly whatever query the searcher used. Then close variants came into the mix, and that definition has steadily morphed over the past few years. First, the inclusion of plurals, misspellings and other similar variants came in 2014, and then, in 2017, different word order and function words took hold. Now phase three is here. On Thursday, Google announced another change to what are considered close variants of an exact match keyword to include variations that share the same meaning as the keyword, including implied words and paraphrases.
Google now builds its own AMP stories for search - Search Engine Land
Google is now using artificial intelligence to "intelligently construct" AMP stories for search. These new AMP stories appear in knowledge panels in search results for actors, athletes, musicians and other famous people. Google said on Monday, "Starting today with stories about notable people -- like celebrities and athletes -- providing a glimpse into facts and important moments from their lives in a rich, visual format. This format lets you easily tap to the articles for more information and provides a new way to discover content from the web." The issue is, when I try this on mobile Safari or mobile Chrome on my iPhone, the stories do not let you interact with them. They do work when in the Google search app on iOS.
Measuring the quality of popular keyword research tools - Search Engine Land
Ever wondered how the results of some popular keyword research tools stack up against the information Google Search Console provides? This article looks at comparing data from Google Search Console (GSC) search analytics against notable keyword research tools and what you can extract from Google. As a bonus, you can get related searches and people also search data results from Google search results by using the code at the end of this article. This article is not meant to be a scientific analysis, as it only includes data from seven websites. To be sure, we were gathering somewhat comprehensive data: we selected websites from the US and the UK plus different verticals.
How to Make Bomb YouTube Content That's Worth Watching, Rewatching & Sharing
Let's begin by driving this point home-- hard. No matter how awesome you are at search engine optimization (SEO), no matter how large your network is, no matter how much you invest in pay-per-click (PPC) ads, YOUR VIDEO CONTENT IS NOT GOING TO RANK IF NO ONE WANTS TO WATCH IT. If you want to get more subscribers, views and show up in YouTube search, Google's featured snippets or anywhere on the internet-- you have to provide and strategically push relevant, informative, entertaining, bomb-ass content. Your video content should not be about your company. No one cares about your company. They care about themselves-- and you need to care about them, too.
Predicting Destinations by Nearest Neighbor Search on Training Vessel Routes
Roลca, Valentin, Onica, Emanuel, Diac, Paul, Amariei, Ciprian
The DEBS Grand Challenge 2018 is set in the context of maritime route prediction. Vessel routes are modeled as streams of Automatic Identification System (AIS) data points selected from real-world tracking data. The challenge requires to correctly estimate the destination ports and arrival times of vessel trips, as early as possible. Our proposed solution partitions the training vessel routes by reported destination port and uses a nearest neighbor search to find the training routes that are closer to the query AIS point. Particular improvements have been included as well, such as a way to avoid changing the predicted ports frequently within one query route and automating the parameters tuning by the use of a genetic algorithm. This leads to significant improvements on the final score.
Reuse and Adaptation for Entity Resolution through Transfer Learning

Entity resolution (ER) is one of the fundamental problems in data integration, where machine learning (ML) based classifiers often provide the state-of-the-art results. Considerable human effort goes into feature engineering and training data creation. In this paper, we investigate a new problem: Given a dataset D_T for ER with limited or no training data, is it possible to train a good ML classifier on D_T by reusing and adapting the training data of dataset D_S from same or related domain? Our major contributions include (1) a distributed representation based approach to encode each tuple from diverse datasets into a standard feature space; (2) identification of common scenarios where the reuse of training data can be beneficial; and (3) five algorithms for handling each of the aforementioned scenarios. We have performed comprehensive experiments on 12 datasets from 5 different domains (publications, movies, songs, restaurants, and books). Our experiments show that our algorithms provide significant benefits such as providing superior performance for a fixed training data size.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai bound for Washington as Trump takes aim at search engine
Google CEO Sundar Pichai delivers the keynote address at the Google I/O 2018 Conference at Shoreline Amphitheater on May 8, 2018, in Mountain View, Calif. Google's two day developer conference runs through May 9, 2018. SAN FRANCISCO -- Rebuked by lawmakers and slammed by President Trump, Google is on the political hot seat -- and its CEO is headed to Capitol Hill to make peace. Earlier this month, Sundar Pichai didn't show up to a congressional hearing on state-sponsored election interference; top execs from Facebook and Twitter did. In a public scolding, the Senate Intelligence Committee left an open chair to spotlight Pichai's absence.
20 Reasons Why Your Search Ranking & Traffic Might Drop - Search Engine Journal
Every business I know of wants to increase sales and make more money. In today's technical and online environment, the only way to be successful is to have a steady flow of traffic to your website. Because Google is a major source of traffic, ranking high in the search results is critical. You need to set up your website correctly to bring in qualified leads that can then be converted into paying customers. If you rank better in organic search, then you should get more website traffic from search engines. But when your website experiences a significant drop in organic search rankings, you will lose traffic, business, and revenue.
Ex-Google employee warns of 'disturbing' plans to launch Chinese search engine
A former employee of Google has warned of the web giant's'disturbing' plans for a search engine in China which could help Beijing monitor its citizens online. Jack Poulson wrote in a letter to the US Senate's commerce committee that the proposed Dragonfly website was'tailored to the censorship and surveillance demands of the Chinese government'. In his letter he also claimed that discussion of the plans among Google employees had been'increasingly stifled'. Mr Poulson was a senior research scientist at Google until he resigned last month in protest at the Dragonfly proposals. A former employee of Google has warned of the web giant's'disturbing' plans for a search engine in China which could help Beijing monitor its citizens online While China is home to the world's largest number of internet users, a 2015 report by US think tank Freedom House found that the country had the most restrictive online use policies of 65 nations it studied, ranking below Iran and Syria.
