Sim2Real Docs: Domain Randomization for Documents in Natural Scenes using Ray-traced Rendering

In the past, computer vision systems for digitized documents could rely on systematically captured, high-quality scans. Today, transactions involving digital documents are more likely to start as mobile phone photo uploads taken by non-professionals. As such, computer vision for document automation must now account for documents captured in natural scene contexts. An additional challenge is that task objectives for document processing can be highly use-case specific, which makes publicly-available datasets limited in their utility, while manual data labeling is also costly and poorly translates between use cases. To address these issues we created Sim2Real Docs - a framework for synthesizing datasets and performing domain randomization of documents in natural scenes. Sim2Real Docs enables programmatic 3D rendering of documents using Blender, an open source tool for 3D modeling and ray-traced rendering. By using rendering that simulates physical interactions of light, geometry, camera, and background, we synthesize datasets of documents in a natural scene context. Each render is paired with use-case specific ground truth data specifying latent characteristics of interest, producing unlimited fit-for-task training data. The role of machine learning models is then to solve the inverse problem posed by the rendering pipeline. Such models can be further iterated upon with real-world data by either fine tuning or making adjustments to domain randomization parameters.
Stochastic Planner-Actor-Critic for Unsupervised Deformable Image Registration

Large deformations of organs, caused by diverse shapes and nonlinear shape changes, pose a significant challenge for medical image registration. Traditional registration methods need to iteratively optimize an objective function via a specific deformation model along with meticulous parameter tuning, but which have limited capabilities in registering images with large deformations. While deep learning-based methods can learn the complex mapping from input images to their respective deformation field, it is regression-based and is prone to be stuck at local minima, particularly when large deformations are involved. To this end, we present Stochastic Planner-Actor-Critic (SPAC), a novel reinforcement learning-based framework that performs step-wise registration. The key notion is warping a moving image successively by each time step to finally align to a fixed image. Considering that it is challenging to handle high dimensional continuous action and state spaces in the conventional reinforcement learning (RL) framework, we introduce a new concept `Plan' to the standard Actor-Critic model, which is of low dimension and can facilitate the actor to generate a tractable high dimensional action. The entire framework is based on unsupervised training and operates in an end-to-end manner. We evaluate our method on several 2D and 3D medical image datasets, some of which contain large deformations. Our empirical results highlight that our work achieves consistent, significant gains and outperforms state-of-the-art methods.
Application of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Libraries: A Systematic Review

As the concept and implementation of cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and machine learning has become relevant, academics, researchers and information professionals involve research in this area. The objective of this systematic literature review is to provide a synthesis of empirical studies exploring application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in libraries. To achieve the objectives of the study, a systematic literature review was conducted based on the original guidelines proposed by Kitchenham et al. (2009). Data was collected from Web of Science, Scopus, LISA and LISTA databases. Following the rigorous/ established selection process, a total of thirty-two articles were finally selected, reviewed and analyzed to summarize on the application of AI and ML domain and techniques which are most often used in libraries. Findings show that the current state of the AI and ML research that is relevant with the LIS domain mainly focuses on theoretical works. However, some researchers also emphasized on implementation projects or case studies. This study will provide a panoramic view of AI and ML in libraries for researchers, practitioners and educators for furthering the more technology-oriented approaches, and anticipating future innovation pathways.
Discovery of Crime Event Sequences with Constricted Spatio-Temporal Sequential Patterns

In this article, we introduce a novel type of spatio-temporal sequential patterns called Constricted Spatio-Temporal Sequential (CSTS) patterns and thoroughly analyze their properties. We demonstrate that the set of CSTS patterns is a concise representation of all spatio-temporal sequential patterns that can be discovered in a given dataset. To measure significance of the discovered CSTS patterns we adapt the participation index measure. We also provide CSTS-Miner: an algorithm that discovers all participation index strong CSTS patterns in event data. We experimentally evaluate the proposed algorithms using two crime-related datasets: Pittsburgh Police Incident Blotter Dataset and Boston Crime Incident Reports Dataset. In the experiments, the CSTS-Miner algorithm is compared with the other four state-of-the-art algorithms: STS-Miner, CSTPM, STBFM and CST-SPMiner. As the results of experiments suggest, the proposed algorithm discovers much fewer patterns than the other selected algorithms. Finally, we provide the examples of interesting crime-related patterns discovered by the proposed CSTS-Miner algorithm.
An Automatic Approach for Generating Rich, Linked Geo-Metadata from Historical Map Images

Historical maps contain detailed geographic information difficult to find elsewhere covering long-periods of time (e.g., 125 years for the historical topographic maps in the US). However, these maps typically exist as scanned images without searchable metadata. Existing approaches making historical maps searchable rely on tedious manual work (including crowd-sourcing) to generate the metadata (e.g., geolocations and keywords). Optical character recognition (OCR) software could alleviate the required manual work, but the recognition results are individual words instead of location phrases (e.g., "Black" and "Mountain" vs. "Black Mountain"). This paper presents an end-to-end approach to address the real-world problem of finding and indexing historical map images. This approach automatically processes historical map images to extract their text content and generates a set of metadata that is linked to large external geospatial knowledge bases. The linked metadata in the RDF (Resource Description Framework) format support complex queries for finding and indexing historical maps, such as retrieving all historical maps covering mountain peaks higher than 1,000 meters in California. We have implemented the approach in a system called mapKurator. We have evaluated mapKurator using historical maps from several sources with various map styles, scales, and coverage. Our results show significant improvement over the state-of-the-art methods. The code has been made publicly available as modules of the Kartta Labs project at https://github.com/kartta-labs/Project.
A photosensor employing data-driven binning for ultrafast image recognition
Pixel binning is a technique, widely used in optical image acquisition and spectroscopy, in which adjacent detector elements of an image sensor are combined into larger pixels. This reduces the amount of data to be processed as well as the impact of noise, but comes at the cost of a loss of information. Here, we push the concept of binning to its limit by combining a large fraction of the sensor elements into a single superpixel that extends over the whole face of the chip. For a given pattern recognition task, its optimal shape is determined from training data using a machine learning algorithm. We demonstrate the classification of optically projected images from the MNIST dataset on a nanosecond timescale, with enhanced sensitivity and without loss of classification accuracy.
US-Rule: Discovering Utility-driven Sequential Rules

Utility-driven mining is an important task in data science and has many applications in real life. High utility sequential pattern mining (HUSPM) is one kind of utility-driven mining. HUSPM aims to discover all sequential patterns with high utility. However, the existing algorithms of HUSPM can not provide an accurate probability to deal with some scenarios for prediction or recommendation. High-utility sequential rule mining (HUSRM) was proposed to discover all sequential rules with high utility and high confidence. There is only one algorithm proposed for HUSRM, which is not enough efficient. In this paper, we propose a faster algorithm, called US-Rule, to efficiently mine high-utility sequential rules. It utilizes rule estimated utility co-occurrence pruning strategy (REUCP) to avoid meaningless computation. To improve the efficiency on dense and long sequence datasets, four tighter upper bounds (LEEU, REEU, LERSU, RERSU) and their corresponding pruning strategies (LEEUP, REEUP, LERSUP, RERSUP) are proposed. Besides, US-Rule proposes rule estimated utility recomputing pruning strategy (REURP) to deal with sparse datasets. At last, a large number of experiments on different datasets compared to the state-of-the-art algorithm demonstrate that US-Rule can achieve better performance in terms of execution time, memory consumption and scalability.
