Drive smarter and safer with these Android Auto tips
Most of the infotainment systems that come with cars are terrible. Voice recognition feels like it's from the 1980s, and the navigation scheme would fail most usability tests. Android Auto was supposed to fix that. Problem is, automakers have been driving in the slow lane when it comes to actually building it into their cars. So Google opted to take matters into its own hands and update Android Auto to operate in a standalone mode that lets you run it on your phone.
Will robots and AI leave your staff out of a job?
It's a startling figure but it's nevertheless one that every business needs to be aware of. Up to 30 per cent of existing British jobs are susceptible to automation from robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) by the early 2030s, according to research undertaken by accountants and business advisors PwC. But PwC maintains that, in many cases, the nature of jobs will change rather than disappear. The likelihood of automation appears highest in sectors such as transport, manufacturing, and wholesale and retail and lower in education, health and social work. What's more, men are at greater potential risk of job automation than women and education will be the key differentiating factor for individual workers.

People on Media: Jointly Identifying Credible News and Trustworthy Citizen Journalists in Online Communities
Mukherjee, Subhabrata, Weikum, Gerhard
Media seems to have become more partisan, often providing a biased coverage of news catering to the interest of specific groups. It is therefore essential to identify credible information content that provides an objective narrative of an event. News communities such as digg, reddit, or newstrust offer recommendations, reviews, quality ratings, and further insights on journalistic works. However, there is a complex interaction between different factors in such online communities: fairness and style of reporting, language clarity and objectivity, topical perspectives (like political viewpoint), expertise and bias of community members, and more. This paper presents a model to systematically analyze the different interactions in a news community between users, news, and sources. We develop a probabilistic graphical model that leverages this joint interaction to identify 1) highly credible news articles, 2) trustworthy news sources, and 3) expert users who perform the role of "citizen journalists" in the community. Our method extends CRF models to incorporate real-valued ratings, as some communities have very fine-grained scales that cannot be easily discretized without losing information. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is the first full-fledged analysis of credibility, trust, and expertise in news communities.
This Skier Created the Ultimate Low-Budget Selfie Drone
Nicolas Vuignier is perpetually reinventing the wheel. As a professional skier and filmmaker, he is in two professions in which ingenuity thrives. Last year, he tied his iPhone to a string and spun it around as he skied, creating impressive 360-degree footage. Now, Vuignier has returned with a new device that allows for yet another unique shot. The camera, based on a Kickstarter project called AER, is essentially a Nerf football with a GoPro taped to the back.
[P] Self-driving AI in GTA V - Just using a ConvNet with decent results update โข r/MachineLearning
I've been working on a tutorial series for creating self-driving cars in Grand Theft Auto 5 for a bit now. The most recent creation is the result of day or so worth of collecting training data, and about 4 days of actual training of the model. It's currently a 30-layer convolutional neural network, it works purely on a frame-by-frame basis with no preprocessing other than an image resize and grayscale. It makes actions based on the current frame's pixel data, with no memory of what it's been doing. I plan to eventually incorporate some form of memory with something like recurrent layers, but...baby steps at a time!
Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling go back to the future in dystopian new 'Blade Runner 2049' trailer
"The key to the future is finally unearthed," Jared Leto somberly intones in the moody new trailer for "Blade Runner 2049," teasing mysteries yet to be revealed in the upcoming sequel to Ridley Scott's 1982 dystopian sci-fi film. Fans will have to hold out five more months to learn what those mysteries may be when the film hits theaters on Oct. 6. But with the new trailer and a live-streamed Q&A Monday morning featuring stars Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling and director, Denis Villeneuve Warner Bros. pulled the curtain back a bit more on one of the year's most anticipated films. Set three decades after the events of the original movie, "Blade Runner 2049" centers on a young LAPD blade runner named Officer K (Gosling), who is tasked with hunting down renegade androids called "replicants." K uncovers a secret that leads him on a quest to find Ford's Rick Deckard, a blade runner who has been missing for 30 years.
iTWire - AI must be implemented with care, says innovation expert
Aaron Reich, senior director of technology innovation at Avanade, told iTWire in an interview that what was powerful about AI and its cognitive computing capability was that it was more than just direct language translation. "Machines today can understand intent and nuances, making translation much more natural than in the past," he said. "However, it's not just about the tool; it's also about how it is embedded in an organisation's culture." Reich (below) is part of the innovation and incubation team at Avanade, a global professional services company providing IT consulting and services focused on the Microsoft platform. For the past few years he has been responsible for growth of Avanade's Windows Azure business.
Blade Runner 2049' trailer teases the replicant dilemma
If you're still debating whether a Blade Runner sequel was a good idea, you might want to see it anyway. Unlike the teaser we got back in December, Blade Runner 2049's first real trailer has more than vanity footage of Rick Deckard's return. Though it's edited to suggest Ryan Gosling's android hunter is about to ask the veteran Blade Runner the series' most haunting question, we'll have to wait until the film premiers on October 6th to see whether Harrison Ford was a robot all along. The trailer opens heavy on the nostalgia, leaning on Vangelis' synth tones from the original film's iconic score. There's a lot of imagery to chew through while we wait to see if director Denis Villenueve (Arrival) pulls off a miracle following up on arguably the top science fiction film of all time.
