The Morning After: How to buy a monitor

Engadget

Going to the movies was a thing we used to do -- and may do again in the future. However, if you're going to an AMC theater anywhere in the world, you won't find any Universal films. The theater chain declared war once NBCUniversal execs told The Wall Street Journal that they plan on continuing a premium VOD release strategy even after the coronavirus pandemic subsides and theaters reopen. The folks at Universal figure they can do that because Trolls World Tour made a reported $95 million since its straight-to-digital rental debut earlier this month. Warner Bros. has lined up a similar strategy for Scoob! next month, and AMC is clearly trying to scare off others from moving in that direction.

Quibi: New billion-dollar streaming service launches with 175 shows featuring world's most famous celebrities โ€“ but leaves some early users confused

The Independent - Tech

Quibi, a new streaming service featuring many of the world's biggest celebrities, has finally launched โ€“ and prompted confusion among those who are the first to use it. The company has launched in the hope of being a version of streaming services like Netflix but with a focus on mobile phones. The hype before it launched has included ads during the Super Bowl and shows starring celebrities from Reece Witherspoon to Liam Hemsworth. The launch came with 175 new shows, ranging from scripted drama to real-life celebrity stories, all of which are short and made to be watched with the phone pointed up vertically rather than the usual landscape view. It has raised $1.75 billion to fund the shows and the app itself on the strength of that idea.

Sonos Radio update brings new free live stations to smart speakers, with guest presenters including Thom Yorke and David Byrne

The Independent - Tech

Sonos has launched a new radio service, allowing people to stream music for free. It is the first time that Sonos has offered a music service of its own on its smart speakers, which until now have played music from other streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music. The new radio service sits alongside those streaming platforms, which will continue to work in the same way as before. It is available now through a software update that can be installed using the Sonos app. It integrates traditional radio programming on news, music and sport from other radio stations, taken from partners such as TuneIn.

Netflix subscribers more than double โ€“ but that could stop when lockdown is lifted, company warns

The Independent - Tech

Netflix more than doubled estimates for how many people would join the service โ€“ but that could stop when the coronavirus lockdown is lifted, it warned. The company saw huge growth as people were forced to stay at home and watch popular series such as Tiger King, which has become one of its most popular shows ever. But it could have a more difficult second half of the year if lockdowns begin to lift and people go back out into the world and stop watching so much TV, Netflix said. The world's largest streaming service gained 15.8 million paying customers from January through March, bringing its global total to 182.9 million. Netflix had predicted it would add 7 million during the period.

iPhone SE review: Affordable and mighty powerful phone is a blockbuster hit

The Independent - Tech

The new iPhone SE has landed and it qualifies as about the best-value phone Apple has yet made. With a price of ยฃ419, it very nearly matches the lowest debut price for an iPhone, too. That was the original iPhone SE which launched in March 2016 for ยฃ359. This is the first time Apple has recycled a phone's name. The original SE (the two letters don't stand for anything, by the way) matched the chassis of the iPhone 5s with a much newer, more powerful processor โ€“ the chip from the iPhone 6s.

Instagram update brings food orders so you can buy dinner straight from stories

The Independent - Tech

Instagram will let people order food through the app with a range of new features. It will allow people to buy takeaways and delivery straight from stories โ€“ meaning that if someone sees something they want to eat within the app, they can simply click to have it brought to their doorstep. The company says it made the change to support local businesses through the lockdown, and allow restaurants to promote themselves as sales fall. The Facebook-owned photo and video-sharing app said a new Action button could be added to a business or restaurant's profile, or a Food Order sticker could be added to their Instagram Stories. People who tap on either prompt will be able to make a purchase through the business's website.

Piracy surges as people search for free films and TV shows to watch online in lockdown

The Independent - Tech

Online piracy has surged in popularity since countries around the world began enforcing lockdown measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, new figures have revealed. Traffic to illegal streaming and download sites rose by nearly 60 per cent between February and March, as people sought ways to watch films and TV shows for free. Piracy tracking firm Muso registered more than 300 million visits to piracy sites in the UK, and more than 1 billion in the US. "Piracy or unlicensed consumption trends are closely linked to paid-for or licensed content," said Muso CEO Andy Chatterley. "Just as Netflix has seen large subscriber gains, we have seen a significant spike in visits to film piracy sites."

Piracy app launches child-friendly mode amid lockdown streaming surge

The Independent - Tech

A popular app dubbed the "Netflix of piracy" has launched a child-friendly mode that filters out inappropriate content, as online pirates seek to profit from a recent surge in streaming. The new feature in Popcorn Time appears to be borrowed from similar parental controls on legitimate streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. Much of the content hosted on Popcorn Time is also taken from its legal counterparts, offering users a free but illegal way to watch streams and torrents of films and TV shows. "The applications provide a free alternative to subscription-based video streaming services such as Netflix," the app states on its website. "Popcorn Time is constantly searching all over the web for the best torrents from the most important sites... If the movie or TV show is out there, Popcorn Time will find the best version possible and start streaming it right away."

Virgin Media outage: Company says it has fixed problem that took internet and TV service down for hours

The Independent - Tech

Virgin Media says it has fixed an issue that took people's internet and TV service offline for hours. The issue meant that connectivity repeatedly dropped out over Monday evening and into the early hours of Tuesday morning, leaving customers without their usual service. Now it says the problem has been fixed โ€“ and noted that it was not the result of increased usage owing to the coronavirus lockdown. "An intermittent broadband issue that started yesterday evening was fixed in the early hours of this morning," a spokesperson said. "This was not caused by increased usage or a lack of capacity. We know how frustrating this was for customers and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience caused."

Stressed firms look for better ways to source products

BBC News

Maxime Firth's business is complicated to manage, even in good times. His company, Onduline, turns recycled fibres into roofing material, after dousing them with bitumen to make them waterproof, and sells products in 100 countries. Its eight production plants span from Nizhny Novgorod in Russia and Penang in Malaysia, to Juiz de Fora in Brazil. Further complicating his supply chain, Mr Firth's business is strongly seasonal. People install roofs in the summer, so products are made from January to March, to sell from April to September.
