Smart time to learn more about artificial intelligence
As Innovation Lead for Precision Medicine at Innovate UK I am sometimes asked about the best STEM subjects to study, usually by parents wanting to help their children select the best university courses. Something they're really interested in, I have tended to say, but now add that something involving AI (Artificial Intelligence) might be a very wise choice. AI's nothing new, but now seems on the verge of making a big impact in clinical settings, reflected in our competition applications in the area of precision medicine. There are many ways AI can play a role in the medical arena, where being able to find patterns and associations in large data sets is fundamental to developing new technologies and services. These large data sets include disparate patient information, such as the increasing levels of genetic information we will have about patients, and linking it to phenotypic information (observable physical properties e.g.
Waymo's self-driving vehicles have racked up 10 million miles
Autonomous vehicle company Waymo has just completed 10 million miles of testing on public roads -- and by the end of the month it'll have clocked up seven billion miles in its virtual world. In a press release, Waymo CEO John Krafcik said that while the company has made "great strides" in its history so far, "the next 10 million will focus on turning our advanced technology into a service that people will use and love." According to Krafcik, Waymo now plans to concentrate on capability, comfort and convenience. Its engineers are reportedly working on new in-house sensing systems, which will help vehicles navigate complex weather conditions, such as rain and snow. Krafcik says the company is working on striking the balance between caution and assertiveness, and cited merging lanes in fast-moving traffic as an example of the challenges it faces.
AI, ML, and Big Data Developers Survey, 2018 Edition - ResearchAndMarkets.com
Artificial intelligence is permeating software development in many ways and many industries, which necessitates a thorough knowledge of how developers are doing this. Big Data, often related, is also becoming a reality for more and more companies; this report provides valuable insight into developer opinions on these topics. Having to transition from existing legacy systems is the top barrier to incorporation of artificial intelligence or machine learning into organizations today, cited by 18% of developers actively working with AI or ML in the researcher's recently released AI, ML and Big Data Development Survey. However, the quality of existing tools was cited by almost the same number (17.4%). Other factors, such as budget or the cost of materials, regulatory or governance issues, and corporate policy restrictions were also cited by nearly as many AI developers as the top two barriers.
Tieto joins European AI Alliance to shape the era of artificial intelligence
Tieto announced today that it is one of the first Nordic companies to join the European AI Alliance, a newly-formed forum for artificial intelligence (AI) stakeholders to come together to push European competitiveness on AI research and development and its impacts on industry and society. The AI Alliance, established by the European Commission, brings together a diverse set of leading AI actors, including companies, consumer organizations, trade unions and other representatives of civil society bodies across Europe to share best practices. The AI Alliance aims to directly contribute to the European debate on AI and impact the Commission's AI policy-making. To achieve that, the AI Alliance works in close collaboration with the High-Level Expert Group on Artificial Intelligence (AI HLEG), a group the Commission has also established, with 52 members from academia, business and civil society such as Bayer, BMW, Bosch, Fraunhofer Institute, Google, IBM, Nokia, Siemens, Telenor and University of Oxford. The AI HLEG advises the Commission on AI's opportunities and challenges, and supports it in the implementation of the European strategy on AI.

Why it's time to learn more about deep learning
Deep learning is a subset of machine learning, and chances are you've already used it whether you know it or not. While you most likely have heard the terms deep learning, machine learning, and AI, you might not be as familiar with real-world deep learning solutions. As you might suspect, the terms are interrelated. If it isn't already, deep learning should be on your radar. It is a subset of machine learning, and both fall under the umbrella of artificial intelligence, which refers to systems built to carry out tasks that normally require human input.

Active Machine Learning Now Available in the VenioOne Platform
Venio Systems, the fastest growing eDiscovery technology provider, is excited to announce the availability of VenioOne Continuous Active Learning (CAL) in its latest release of VenioOne. After months of testing and incorporating feedback from our partners, as well as a hands on workshop for clients and partners held during ILTACON, VenioOne CAL is ready! VenioOne CAL is available to be added in the VenioOne platform for a one-time annual fee with no additional per document or gigabyte charges. While traditional technology assisted review (TAR) has been around for at least a decade, CAL, or TAR 2.0 as it is sometimes called, has only been around for the last several years and gotten serious attention in the last couple. At a time when the legal community is focused on the potential for artificial intelligence (AI) in the practice of law, the time for CAL to boost the speed of document reviews has finally arrived.
