IBM's Hypertaste is an artificial tongue that can classify liquids
AI that can generate new flavor combinations from scratch is nothing novel, but what about models that can taste those flavors like a human? In a recently published paper ("A portable potentiometric electronic tongue leveraging smartphone and cloud platforms") and an accompanying blog post, researchers at IBM's Zurich-based R&D division detailed Hypertaste, an artificial tongue designed to fingerprint beverages and other liquids "less fit for ingestion." Such a system could be used to guarantee supply chain safety for food and drinks, proposed IBM research staff member Patrick Ruch, who noted that there's currently little to verify that packages contain what's on the label apart from conducting costly experiments. Suppliers acting in bad faith could insert lower-quality products into the supply chain, while counterfeiters could fake a real product by adding the few chemical compounds which are most likely to be tested for in a lab. "There are many substances out there that we would like to'taste' without actually putting them in our mouth. Consider a government agency interested in an on-the-fly water quality check of a lake or river at a remote location, a manufacturer wanting to verify the origin of raw materials, or a food producer trying to identify counterfeit wines or whiskeys," wrote Ruch.
How Google is Communist China's collaborator
On Wednesday, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin declared that Google's work in China is not a security concern. As he told CNBC, "I don't see any area -- again the president and I did diligence on this issue -- and we're not aware of any areas where Google is working with the Chinese government in any way that raises concerns." Google's most disturbing Chinese initiatives involve the co-development of technology. Cooperation of this sort is so injurious to the United States that it should be criminalized, by emergency presidential order. Artificial intelligence is going to have a big impact on adjusters, actuaries and insurance agents, but it won't necessarily kill their jobs, an AI expert suggests. But lower-skilled jobs may be in jeopardy. "Jobs at call centres are going to disappear slowly with chatbots," predicts Eli Fathi, co-founder and CEO of Ottawa-based MindBridge Analytics Inc., which makes financial analysis products that use AI. Fathi is a recently-announced finalist in EY Canada's Entrepreneur Of The Year award program. It's a technology that will replace humans in some cases."

AI diagnoses lung cancers in 20 seconds
Russian researchers from the Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University (SPbPU) and radiologists from St. Petersburg Clinical Research for Specialized Types of Medical Care developed AI software that can distinguish and subsequently mark lung cancers on a CT scan within 20 seconds. The AI software, dubbed Doctor AI-zimov, can detect lung nodules as small as 2 millimeters on CT scans, according to a prepared statement issued by SPbPU. "Initially, we set up an algorithm to search for nodules starting from 6 millimeters, because radiologists themselves start the treatment of tumors of this size. But the system is so smart that it was able to find nodules of even smaller size," said lead researcher Lev Utkin, PhD, of the SPbPU Research Laboratory of Neural Network Technologies and Artificial Intelligence in St. Petersburg, Russia. Utkin and colleagues trained the software on 1,000 CT scans sourced from the Lung Image Database Consortium.
