Chats with AI

#artificialintelligence

A lazy Sunday project, here is a meandering log of my interactions with an intelligent chat application created on Character.AI which simulates the experience of a WWI adventure game. We select chat bot personalities to engage from a visual catalog. They range from games to talking with historical figures like Freud or Socrates or contemporary personalities like Elon Musk and Tony Stark. They include psychologists, motivation and relationship coaches, anime and pokemon characters, language tutors, etc. Users can also build their own personalized chat bots with custom prompts and example text to tilt the AI different directions. The underlying technology is based on large language models, (LLMs) which are spreading across the web like wildfire. LLMs generate text that rivals humans for many tasks and can carry on conversations while remembering the context of the discussion. This tech is still in its infancy.

AI predicts a Dodgers World Series win after a COVID-shortened season

Engadget

Major League Baseball is entering uncharted waters with the start of its COVID-abridged season today. Nobody's really sure if the 60-game season will even be able to get through the World Series without disruption by the pandemic's spread. However, one crowd-sourced AI system already has a pretty good guess as to who will be taking home the Commissioner's Trophy. The folks at Unanimous AI have been making high profile predictions like these since 2016, when their UNU platform correctly figured 11 of 15 winners for that year's Academy Awards. In 2017, the company followed up by correctly guessing the Kentucky Derby's top four finishers -- in order, no less -- and in 2019, correctly figured that the Houston Astros would make it to the series (though nobody could have seen the Nat's miraculous postseason run coming). "The fundamental core of our system is a technology that captures input from groups of people by connecting them together in real time using AI algorithms modeled after swarms," Dr. Louis Rosenberg, Unanimous' founder and chief scientist, told Engadget.

AI bot predicts World Series winners

#artificialintelligence

America has been glued to their TV screens since the MLB playoffs began on October 1. As the field has whittled down to just four teams, odds makers are eager to figure out which team has the edge. Researchers at DataRobot thought it would be a fun exercise to pull all of the MLB data from the last few decades and have their AI figure out who will win the 2019 World Series. SEE: Artificial intelligence: A business leader's guide (free PDF) (TechRepublic Premium) At the start of the playoffs, the AI predicted the Los Angeles Dodgers were most likely to win the pennant, followed closely by the Houston Astros. In the American League, DataRobot's AI said the Houston Astros had a 40% probability of winning the American League, followed by the New York Yankees at 25% and Minnesota Twins at 18%.

Price May Cut Back Video Games, Pitches Saturday at Toronto

U.S. News

FILE - In this May 3, 2018 file photo Boston Red Sox starting pitcher David Price throws to a Texas Rangers batter during the first inning of a baseball game in Arlington, Texas. Price has been sent back to Boston for medical tests after experiencing a tingling sensation in his pitching hand again. Price was scratched from his scheduled start Wednesday, May 9, 2018 against the rival New York Yankees. Red Sox manager Alex Cora says Price felt tingling in his hand Sunday while throwing a bullpen that was cut short, the same symptoms that forced him out of an early-season game against the Yankees in Boston.

Ancient History and Short-Term Memories in World Series Game 1

The New Yorker

Last night's broadcast of Game 1 of the World Series, on Fox, opened with a video featuring eighty-, ninety-, and hundred-year-old fans of the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians talking about the years they've spent watching their favorite team lose. "I'm damn sick and tired of waiting," a particularly charming hundred-and-four-year-old woman in an Indians T-shirt said. As is well known by this point, the Cubs have not won a World Series since 1908, when the Yankees were still known as the Highlanders and the Dodgers were the Superbas, and they had not even participated in one since 1945, two years before Jackie Robinson integrated baseball. The Indians, meanwhile, have not won a title since 1948, when the ageless Negro League folk hero Satchel Paige was on the roster, and they hadn't reached the Series since the mid-nineties, when they suffered two heartbreaking defeats, in 1995 and 1997. It seemed, then, that this intro would set a schmaltzy tone for the undoubtedly historic series to come.

Predicting Employee Satisfaction and Turnover Rates with Machine Learning

Every startup business faces one crucial initial challenge: Capturing and retaining good employees. Without that key element, success can be very elusive. For Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate, for instance, only 58 % of new companies are still in business after four years. In Retail, only 48% are still on their feet after four years. And with Information startups, only 37% are still running after four years.
