Daily Mail - Science & tech

A horrific rape and incest video game has sparked fury by encouraging players to be'women's worst nightmare'. The game, titled'No Mercy', centres around a protagonist who rapes his family members including his aunt and his own mother. Players of the vile game are instructed to'never take no for an answer' in their ambition to'subdue' and'own' women. Despite its horrendous themes, the game does not have an official age rating and was available for sale on Steam, the most popular digital game store. The game's developer, Zerat Games, published the game on Steam in March where children as young as 13 can make an account.

AI-created child sexual abuse images 'threaten to overwhelm internet'

The Guardian

The "worst nightmares" about artificial intelligence-generated child sexual abuse images are coming true and threaten to overwhelm the internet, a safety watchdog has warned. The Internet Watch Foundation (IWF) said it had found nearly 3,000 AI-made abuse images that broke UK law. The UK-based organisation said existing images of real-life abuse victims were being built into AI models, which then produce new depictions of them. It added that the technology was also being used to create images of celebrities who have been "de-aged" and then depicted as children in sexual abuse scenarios. Other examples of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) included using AI tools to "nudify" pictures of clothed children found online.

All Those Professors Warning About ChatGPT? My Class Is Their Worst Nightmare.

Slate

At the end of June, I started teaching a course that was designed by ChatGPT, uses ChatGPT, and is even assessed by ChatGPT. The course itself is also about ChatGPT. The idea for it came to me earlier this year when I saw news about job opportunities for "prompt engineers," who could purportedly make more than $300,000 per year. As a professor who teaches about advanced technology transitions, my academic ears pricked up. Was there a skillset here we should be teaching our students? And if so, how should we go about it?

Joan Is Awful: Black Mirror episode is every striking actor's worst nightmare

The Guardian

With the most recent season of Black Mirror, you sensed that Charlie Brooker was keen to move away from his reputation as a prophet. Time and time again since his series hit the air, it has managed to correctly predict the future in all sorts of horrible ways. But this season felt like it was deliberately skewing away from reality precisely to avoid this happening again. After all, unless a hapless demon destroys Earth – or unless Britney Spears literally turns into a werewolf – then Brooker is probably in much safer territory. Reader, it has happened already.

I've worked my entire professional life with personal computers, and most of that time has been spent helping other people use them. I have been the voice on the other end of the 800 number who has to tell you that you should turn it off and turn it back on again. So I've learned a thing or two about the place that computers have in people's lives.

New AI system can create your worst nightmare! Latest News & Updates at Daily News & Analysis

#artificialintelligence

Scientists have created a "Nightmare Machine" - an artificial intelligence system that can understand what makes certain images frightening, and tranform harmless-looking images into stuff of nightmares. The primary reason for building Nightmare Machine was to explore the common fear inspired by intelligent computers, said researchers including Pinar Yanardag from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab. They wanted to confront the anxiety inspired by AI, and simultaneously test if a computer is capable of understanding and visualising what makes people afraid. The designers used "deep learning" - a system that mimics the neural connections in a human brain - to teach a computer what makes for a frightening visual, according to Manuel Cebrian, a principal research scientist at CSIRO in Australia. "Deep-learning algorithms perform remarkably well in several tasks considered difficult or impossible," Cebrian said.

Apple's worst nightmare?

Google has made a strong phone debut, according to the first round of reviews. Strong enough to take on the market-leading iPhone. The 5-inch Pixel and 5.5-inch Pixel XL are the company's first pure Google-branded smartphones, with the tagline "made by Google." To date, Google has released phones under the Nexus brand, which tended to emphasize the phone's manufacturer, such as LG and Huawei, not Google. Wall Street Journal: "The Google Pixel is now the best Android smartphone you can buy," the Journal said in its review.
