Of course, it can do many things beyond confounding educators and delighting students. It can, for instance, write computer code. And, I discovered, give travel planning advice. To see how useful its travel suggestions might be, I began by asking what there is to see in Uturoa, the main town on the French Polynesian island of Raiatea.

AI Weekly: Google shifts from mobile-first to AI-first world

"An important shift from a mobile first world to an AI first world," declared Google CEO Sundar Pichai, summarizing the Google I/O 2017 keynote yesterday. His description of the changes underway at his company apply to nearly every business today. Almost all of Google's announcements touched on AI in one way or another. From introducing a second generation of TPU chips to accelerate deep learning for such applications as cancer research and DNA sequencing, to a broad effort to get Google Home on as many screens and devices as possible. The company also shared that it's speech recognition technology was now better than 95 percent accurate.


The Little Hack That Could: The Story of Spotify's "Discover Weekly" Recommendation Engine

"Empower bottom-up innovation and amazing things will happen." He was responsible for one of those amazing things: a way to help Spotify users discover new music called Discover Weekly. This tool launched about a year ago; it now has 40 million users and is helping to build the careers of new artists. Newett joined Spotify in 2013, initially working on a team developing a web page with personalized information, news about artists, album releases, and local concerts, along with a recommender system that offered suggestions of albums a user might find appealing. The recommendation feature, Newett recalled, seemed like a good idea, but wasn't heavily used.

It is very cool to see the myriad ways in which people bring their favorite fictional characters to life, and I have complete respect for the time, dedication and imagination that it takes to cosplay. If any of you are planning on participating, we would love to see pictures and hear about any events you attended! Additionally, and I really, REALLY shouldn't have to say this (or get shouty about it) but don't post things on Public Access if you haven't written them. We do not, ever, in any-freaking-way tolerate plagiarism -- and yes, rephrasing someone else's article word-for-word counts as plagiarism.


Don't believe the hype about human music curators

There's a myth going around that music geeks are essential to good music curation. Just look at BuzzFeed writer Reggie Ugwu's glowing feature on the "small teams of anonymous, hardcore music fans [racing] to solve the record industry's toughest problem." Indeed, Pandora, Apple, Spotify, Tidal, Google Play, and the rest bend over backwards to make clear how much they rely on music experts, and there seems to be no worse slander than saying a competitor is dependent on algorithms. But do you really need a human to pick your music? In a world when we increasingly trust AI to pick our movies, dating options, email replies, scheduling, and much more?

Steven Pinker believes there's some interesting gender psychology at play when it comes to the robopocalypse. Could artificial intelligence become evil or are alpha male scientists just projecting?

This week has been AI week here at Engadget, which means we've been examining the variety of ways that artificial intelligence is changing our technological landscape and our society as a whole -- from meeting the bots that play Doom to looking at how AI could change the future of combat, policing and our roles in the workplace to asking why digital assistants often default to female voices and personalities, we've been all-AI, all week. It's been pretty fun, actually. Over in the community section, a quick heads up to our commenters: We've rolled out a "Censor" feature in comment threads which allows us to remove a comment that violates our community guidelines without removing the replies and responses to that comment. So far we've only had to use this feature a handful of times -- largely due to name-calling or cursing -- but this at least gives us the ability to keep a conversation even if the person who started it was a bad actor. Also, if you're registering to be a Public Access member (which you can do here, hint, hint), please be aware that you must answer the specific registrations questions that are asked and please do not answer with joke replies.
