Erosion victim warns 'trauma tourists' to stay away
Erosion victim warns'trauma tourists' to stay away A woman who lost her home at the start of the year due to coastal erosion has warned visitors to stay away and don't gloat. Shelley Cowlin, whose home of 48 years in Thorpeness, Suffolk, was demolished in January, said tourists turning up to witness other people's suffering and even steal items from their gardens were sick. Now living in a holiday let, which she said did not feel like home, the 89-year-old called on so-called trauma tourists to leave villagers in peace. We don't want people relishing in glee at the tragedy of other people, she said. Following the demolition, Cowlin said there had been incidents of people claiming they were her gardener, or even her grandchildren, and pinching things.

They're sweets, but not as you know them - why freeze-dried candy is trending
What are freeze-dried sweets and why are they popular? When Savannah Louise West first tasted freeze-dried gummies, she was intrigued. I think the crunch is so satisfying, and I find it interesting to experience a candy I'm familiar with that has an entirely new texture, says the Toronto resident. Ms West is describing one of the main features of this spin-off candy that independent and major confectionary manufacturers have been releasing onto shelves, both online and offline, for the past three years. It's been largely a US phenomena, hence we'll use the US term candy, but for our UK readers, we're talking about sweets here.

Hidden markov model to predict tourists visited place
Demessance, Theo, Bi, Chongke, Djebali, Sonia, Guerard, Guillaume
Nowadays, social networks are becoming a popular way of analyzing tourist behavior, thanks to the digital traces left by travelers during their stays on these networks. The massive amount of data generated; by the propensity of tourists to share comments and photos during their trip; makes it possible to model their journeys and analyze their behavior. Predicting the next movement of tourists plays a key role in tourism marketing to understand demand and improve decision support. In this paper, we propose a method to understand and to learn tourists' movements based on social network data analysis to predict future movements. The method relies on a machine learning grammatical inference algorithm. A major contribution in this paper is to adapt the grammatical inference algorithm to the context of big data. Our method produces a hidden Markov model representing the movements of a group of tourists. The hidden Markov model is flexible and editable with new data. The capital city of France, Paris is selected to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed methodology.

Buckingham Palace Christmas market: why tourists flocked there – and found just locked gates and big puddles
The hot spot seemed the perfect place for Yuletide-loving royalists. But, as with the Eiffel Tower in Beijing and some of the most picturesque windmills in the Netherlands, there was much less to it than first met the eye ... Yes: broad paths lined with wooden huts, festooned with lights and Christmas trees, "a beautiful winter wonderland atmosphere" - all within the forecourt of the royal palace. It sounds almost too good to be true. But look at the picture! Where are all those lights hanging from?

South Korea set to decide whether to let Google Maps finally work properly
For tourists visiting South Korea, one of the world's most technologically advanced nations, navigating the country's urban heartlands can prove surprisingly frustrating for one simple reason: Google Maps just doesn't work effectively. But on 11 August that could change, as South Korean authorities are set to decide whether to finally grant Google's request to export the country's detailed mapping data to overseas servers. Such a move would open up functionality that allows the app to give detailed directions and show users the best routes to travel. It is a debate spanning nearly two decades which has evolved into a broader test of how democracies balance digital sovereignty with economic openness. Local industry groups are warning of market domination from foreign companies, while those who back Google's request argue restrictions harm tourism and innovation.

Point of Interest Recommendation: Pitfalls and Viable Solutions
Bellogín, Alejandro, Dietz, Linus W., Ricci, Francesco, Sánchez, Pablo
Point of interest (POI) recommendation can play a pivotal role in enriching tourists' experiences by suggesting context-dependent and preference-matching locations and activities, such as restaurants, landmarks, itineraries, and cultural attractions. Unlike some more common recommendation domains (e.g., music and video), POI recommendation is inherently high-stakes: users invest significant time, money, and effort to search, choose, and consume these suggested POIs. Despite the numerous research works in the area, several fundamental issues remain unresolved, hindering the real-world applicability of the proposed approaches. In this paper, we discuss the current status of the POI recommendation problem and the main challenges we have identified. The first contribution of this paper is a critical assessment of the current state of POI recommendation research and the identification of key shortcomings across three main dimensions: datasets, algorithms, and evaluation methodologies. We highlight persistent issues such as the lack of standardized benchmark datasets, flawed assumptions in the problem definition and model design, and inadequate treatment of biases in the user behavior and system performance. The second contribution is a structured research agenda that, starting from the identified issues, introduces important directions for future work related to multistakeholder design, context awareness, data collection, trustworthiness, novel interactions, and real-world evaluation.

Google used AI to 'reconceptualize' The Wizard of Oz for the Las Vegas Sphere
Google has used AI to revamp one of the most beloved films of all time for a 360-degree Sin City screen with the highest resolution in the world. The rerolled version of The Wizard of Oz will debut this August at The Sphere, the Las Vegas entertainment venue with a famously globular LED screen. Whether a technical marvel, dystopian nightmare fuel or some combination, the project will surely continue The Sphere's penchant for extravagant spectacles that persuade tourists to plunk down hundreds of dollars to sit for a few hours in one of its 17,600 seats. Sphere Entertainment, the company behind the venue, worked on the project with Google, Magnopus and Warner Bros. Discovery, which owns The Wizard of Oz rights. Google describes it as an "epic undertaking of creativity and technology," humbly likening it to the cinematic boundaries broken by the acclaimed Technicolor original.
