Excuse Me, Is There AI in That?

The Atlantic - Technology

As soon as Apple announced its plans to inject generative AI into the iPhone, it was as good as official: The technology is now all but unavoidable. AI has already colonized web search, appearing in Google and Bing. OpenAI, the 80 billion start-up that has partnered with Apple and Microsoft, feels ubiquitous; the auto-generated products of its ChatGPTs and DALL-Es are everywhere. Rarely has a technology risen--or been forced--into prominence amid such controversy and consumer anxiety. Certainly, some Americans are excited about AI, though a majority said in a recent survey, for instance, that they are concerned AI will increase unemployment; in another, three out of four said they believe it will be abused to interfere with the upcoming presidential election.

AI Is Exposing Who Really Has Power in Silicon Valley

The Atlantic - Technology

Silicon Valley churns out new products all the time, but rarely does one receive the level of hype that has surrounded the release of GPT-4. The follow-up to ChatGPT can ace standardized tests, tell you why a meme is funny, and even help do your taxes. Since the San Francisco start-up OpenAI introduced the technology earlier this month, it has been branded as "remarkable but unsettling," and has led to grandiose statements about how "things will never be the same." But actually trying out these features for yourself--or at least the ones that have already been publicly released--does not come cheap. Unlike ChatGPT, which captivated the world because it was free, GPT-4 is currently only available to non-developers through a premium service that costs $20 a month.

As chatbot sophistication grows, AI debate intensifies

#artificialintelligence

California start-up OpenAI has released a chatbot capable of answering a variety of questions, but its impressive performance has reopened the debate on the risks linked to artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. The conversations with ChatGPT, posted on Twitter by fascinated users, show a kind of omniscient machine, capable of explaining scientific concepts and writing scenes for a play, university dissertations or even functional lines of computer code. "Its answer to the question'what to do if someone has a heart attack' was incredibly clear and relevant," Claude de Loupy, head of Syllabs, a French company specialized in automatic text generation, told AFP. "When you start asking very specific questions, ChatGPT's response can be off the mark," but its overall performance remains "really impressive," with a "high linguistic level," he said. OpenAI, cofounded in 2015 in San Francisco by billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk, who left the business in 2018, received $1 billion from Microsoft in 2019. The start-up is best known for its automated creation software: GPT-3 for text generation and DALL- E for image generation.

AI-based radiology may address the shortage of radiologists in India

#artificialintelligence

According to a report from Apollo Hospitals, there are only about 10,000 trained radiologists for the current population of India, and AI-based radiology reporting could be a saviour to address the shortage of radiologists. Synapsica, an AI-based radiology reporting start-up, has been using AI-powered technology that automates several aspects of radiology workflow, improves the quality of reports, and increases transparency between patients and doctors. Meenakshi Singh, Co-Founder and CEO of Synapsica, saw the effect of the shortage of radiologists in her hometown in UP and decided to use her AI chops to find a faster and more efficient method to reduce the workload of doctors and radiologists, to help patients get their diagnoses sooner. How is AI used in radiology workflow? Explaining how AI is used in radiology workflow, Meenakshi said, "Once a patient scan is taken, and the information reaches our secure cloud server, the AI engine automatically creates biomarkers of pathologies that are shared with the reporting radiologist in a viewer that presents the patient's scan. A layer of NLP on top of AI-generated bio-markers also pre-fills radiology reports with relevant clinical findings that can be edited by the radiologist, saving typing time. The AI engine also generates reporting instructions that automate tasks normally performed by back-office support personnel."

Artificial intelligence in care and health sector

#artificialintelligence

The DigiRehab start-up is keen to enable the elderly to lead self-determined lives for as long as possible. To this end, the start-up has come up with a customized digital exercise workout. Lars Jessen, Germany Manager of DigiRehab GmbH, said: "We want to strengthen their physical and mental health and increase their quality of life." The concept has been tried and tested in Denmark since 2017 and in Norway, Austria and Germany (Hamburg) for over two years. "Studies show that our exercise scheme has reduced the need for care by 74 per cent," said Jessen.

5 ways artificial intelligence could shape our lives

#artificialintelligence

LISBON (AFP) - Technology evangelists habitually brim with enthusiasm over artificial intelligence's potential to transform our lives, and the crowds at this year's Web Summit were no exception. Here are five uses for AI showcased at one of the world's largest technology conferences, which returned to Lisbon last week after the 2020 edition was called off due to the pandemic. When Iker Casillas learned of a start-up that uses AI to better detect irregular heart rhythms, he swiftly signed up as an investor. The Spanish football legend had suffered a heart attack in 2019, putting a brutal end to his career. Madrid-based company Idoven analyses data from home heart monitoring kits to track people's cardiac health - and crucially, to flag up looming problems.

Produce Your Start-Up with Machine Learning

Let me tell you a little-known fact. Look at companies that use a gaming mindset to help you grow and monetize your company. Snapchat or Uber might be the next big thing. They will likely look more like a gaming studio that uses the best user acquisition, retention, and revenue strategies from the gaming industry. The video game industry is more important than the movie and music industries.

AMSimp's teen founders predict weather with machine learning – IAM Network

#artificialintelligence

Our Start-up of the Week is AMSimp, an Irish duo creating open-source software that leverages machine learning to improve numerical weather predictions. Earlier this year, Dogpatch Labs hosted the Patch summer accelerator, which invited talented young people between the ages of 16 and 19 to receive mentorship from Irish entrepreneurs and tech veterans. The accelerator, which aimed to root out and prepare future entrepreneurs, scientists and engineers to help them create impactful companies, technology and research played an important role in the foundation of AMSimp. Co-founded by Conor Casey and Laura O'Sullivan, the start-up sees a great opportunity to improve the methods used to predict the weather. O'Sullivan, who is a self-taught machine learning developer has previously won prizes for exoplanet detection and cervical cancer screening research.

This start-up is using AI to suggest emojis, social content for SMBs

#artificialintelligence

There is no shortage of options for social media management tools; there are more than 300 listed on the marketing technology landscape. And HelloWoofy isn't on it yet, but the start-up is aiming to bring the assistance of automation to social content creation for small businesses. The company announced a new integration with social media management platform Hootsuite Friday. As with any martech solution, integrations are key to user growth and retention. HelloWoofy has scheduling features, too, but it doesn't have the massive user base of Hootsuite.
