Promising Indian AI startups to watch in 2023
The Artificial intelligence (AI) suite of technologies that include machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, image recognition, and natural language processing (NLP), to name a few, is undoubtedly transforming our individual lives and business models. The AI market in India, too, is showing a lot of promise. A joint study conducted by Microsoft and the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) expects this market to grow 20% in the next five years with a major part of this growth being attributed to private companies, and industry bodies in this domain. While we acknowledge that the list is not exhaustive, we have compiled a list of a few such entities that have stood out in 2022. Founded in 2015, Staqu is a Gurugram-headquartered AI startup.
When AI Comes to Police's Rescue
In the first week of September, the Uttar Pradesh STF was conferred with FICCI Smart Policing Award 2021, among more than 190 entries from 19 state police forces, four CAPFs and other central police forces. The STF branch of the UP police won it for their application of the JARVIS tool. Indigenously developed by a Gurugram-based AI research startup, StaqU, the JARVIS-SIAN tool was launched in 2021 by IPS Amitabh Yash. Founded in 2015, StaqU uses state-of-the-art image recognition, text-processing & summarisation, classification, and language-independent proprietary speaker identification. Kitchens in the cloud: AI is restoring consumer trust in the food delivery business - Microsoft Stories India
Before COVID-19 struck India, Rajesh Agrawal and his wife, Meenakshi, would often get food from restaurants delivered to their home. A weekly treat of chicken tikka masala or lamb biryani would be a break from the vegetarian dishes they cook at home. It's been nearly a year since the Agrawals stopped ordering in food from their favorite restaurants. "There's no way to tell how clean and hygienic the restaurant kitchens are really," Mr. Agrawal says. "Sure, the government has released processes for restaurants during the pandemic. But we can't be certain that they're following those, can we?"
Artificial Intelligence-led advancements seeping into different industries
Cutting-edge automation, smart features and productivity hacks; the advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is here to disrupt conventional norms. While users may remain oblivious to the sheer extent and scale of automation seeping into our daily lives, we can all take a whiff of the changing times. The writing on the wall is clear! AI is here to make our everyday lived experiences smarter and more efficient. "AI will be the best or worst thing ever for humanity," says the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. Musk has been one of the most vociferous about the impact of artificial intelligence or AI on human life, voicing both concern and hope of what it can do to the future of the human race. "I have exposure to the most cutting-edge AI, and I think people should be really concerned by it," Musk said at the National Governors Association. "AI is a fundamental risk to the existence of human civilization in a way that car accidents, airplane crashes, faulty drugs or bad food were not -- they were harmful to a set of individuals within society, of course, but they were not harmful to society as a whole." While Musk has his concerns about robots taking up human jobs and becoming far more intelligent than humans, the fact remains that AI as a technology was the most talked about in 2017 in the Indian startup ecosystem.

How Artificial Intelligence is transforming start-ups, small firms
Artificial Intelligence (AI) -- the technology that tries to mimic human behaviour and thought processes -- has decisively broken the size barrier. No more is it the preserve of big tech firms, as small and medium outfits and start-ups are increasingly using it to great effect. For instance, last month travel-search marketplace ixigo launched an AI-powered chatbot -- ixibaba -- for its users. The chatbot (an automated response system that gives users the feeling of chatting with another human) helps travellers find the cheapest travel deals, hotels, vacation destinations and things to do in a city. "Now AI is better positioned for an uptake, especially in domain-specific contexts, as a lot of Big Data is available. AI, one part of which is machine learning, is the next big thing," said Aloke Bajpai, co-founder and CEO at ixigo.
