What video game ephemera tell us about ourselves
I just finished writing a feature about the Video Game History Foundation in Oakland, California, and how it is preparing to share its digital archive of games magazines. From 30 January, you'll be able to visit the institute's website and explore a collection of about 1,500 publications from throughout the history of games, all scanned in high detail, all searchable for keywords. It's a magnificent resource for researchers and those who just want to find the first-ever review of Tetris or Pokémon. I can't wait to visit. While researching the article, I spoke to John O'Shea and Ann Wain from the National Videogame Museum in Sheffield, which is also collecting games mags and other printed ephemera.

Spider-man, Star Wars and Zelda battle for top honours in UK gaming
Welcome to the 2024 Bafta Game Awards, the UK video game industry's night of nights. As the stereotype goes, we gamers see very little of the sun, but it is beaming this afternoon as we set up for the BAFTA Game Awards red carpet. There are some truly incredible games in the running tonight, including heavyweights Baldur's Gate 3, Alan Wake 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, as well as some brilliant new faces behind breakout releases Dave the Diver, Dredge and Lethal Company. Shortly, we'll hear from our colleagues reporting live from the red carpet, where the game developers are looking very dapper, having swapped their jeans and sneakers for suits and frocks (well, some of them have). We are in for a great night, so stick with us as we take you all the way through to the end screen!
The 2024 Golden Globe winners, as predicted by AI - so do you agree with its suggestions?
After months of anticipation, the 2024 Golden Globes nominees were finally announced this week. From popstar Dua Lipa to actress Hannah Waddingham, plenty of British and Irish stars managed to earn themselves top nods. But while the stars will have to wait until 7 January to discover their fate, we let curiosity get the better of us and enlisted AI to help predict the results. MailOnline gave Google's Bard the list of nominees and asked it to guess the winners, based on past trends and current reviews. So, do you agree with its predictions?

'Spider-Man' modification scene turns into Pride flag battlefield
Shortly after the game's PC release, a modder going by the handle Mike Hawk (probably don't try saying it out loud) released a mod called "Non-Newtownian New York." According to its creator, the mod replaced "Newton's Prism's artifacts with the stars and stripes." This was a roundabout way of saying it turned Pride flags into United States flags. As many have pointed out, "Spider-Man" already includes a plethora of U.S. flags even without mods, and Spider-Man -- given his habit of standing up for the oppressed -- has frequently been associated with progressive causes.

Artificial Intelligence, Genuine Nightmares
I distinctly remember the moment I was first intrigued by the possibilities of AI Art. On December 13th, 2021 I was scrolling through Twitter and breaking up the endless parade of apocalyptic news stories, vicious wisecracks and obscure movie trivia fighting for space on my feed was a puzzling and bizarre comic-grotesquerie "Elon Musk Dying in Space," created by one @wagface. No malice towards Mr. Musk, but one thing I love about Twitter is how the rich and poor, the powerful and anonymous are all trapped together in the same canvas sack, and this was a striking example of an anonymous online wise-guy turning the tools of cutting edge technology against one of the world's most pre-eminent technologists. I was also totally baffled, "What, exactly, am I looking at?" The image's melted plastic, smeared pixel future-primitive aesthetic couldn't've been more appropriate towards the subject at hand, but how was this nightmare created and what else is it capable of creating?

10 Trends That Will Reshape the Marketing Industry in 2022
Digital marketing is constantly changing. The next five years will be more than just change -- they will be a complete transformation of how brands operate and what they stand for. The iOS14 update changed how data is used in marketing, but its impact is far from over. Advertisers are using omnichannel reporting to look at the bigger picture rather than results from a single channel. It also means first-party data will continue to rise in value and popularity as it allows brands to communicate directly with their audience without limitations.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales' Muscle Update Utilizes Machine Learning
Spider-Man: Miles Morales received a new update this week that added a new "Advanced Tech" suit and realistic simulated muscle deformation. Now a developer from Insomniac Games has revealed technical details on how the muscle deformation works. Even though Spider-Man: Miles Morales released last November in a complete, well-running, and well-polished state, Insomniac appears to be committed to adding new features and technical improvements to the game after launch. One of the largest updates came in December, when Insomniac released a new "Performance RT" mode that combined Ray Tracing and 60FPS, two features that had previously been separate options. This new PS5-exclusive update for Miles Morales adds realistic simulations for Miles' muscles deforming, as well as cloth simulations for the suit on top.
Insomniac may be using Sony AI machine learning for Spider-Man on PS5
Insomniac Games is using machine learning to enhance in-game visuals on the PlayStation 5, and the studio could be working alongside Sony's AI division on experimental new technology. Insomniac Games recently turned heads by confirming the PlayStation 5 can support machine learning. The team is using it in creative ways, starting with a new PS5 update for Spider-Man Miles Morales that significantly changes muscular appearance in the game. The new technique creates more realistic "muscle deformation," a term used in animation to describe how models are transformed and manipulated in 3D rigs. According to Lead Character Technical Director Josh DiCarlo, the technique is using machine learning inference, which means Insomniac is feeding the algorithm data in real-time that's running on the PlayStation 5. DiCarlo says this technique doesn't come at a graphical hit.
PS5 Capable Of Machine Learning, AI Upscaling According To Insomniac Games - PlayStation Universe
Spider-Man: Miles Morales developer Insomniac Games has revealed that the PS5 is capable of Machine Learning and AI Upscaling. The comments come via Insomniac Games' Josh DiCarlo during a series of tweets about the performance of the PS5 and its work on the Spider-Man franchise. DiCarlo revealed that its innards are "ML based," and that the studio is only just scratching the service on what Sony's new console is capable of achieving. Not sure how specific I can get with specs now for now, but you are correct in the assumption that all final deformations are resulting via ML interference at runtime on the PS5 hardware. There are no blend shapes, skin decamp, or tradition lyrics of the trade (nothing against them!) Imagine Spider-Man 2 built from the ground up by PS5 capabilities!
