The plan, developed decades ago for medical emergencies in space, has never before been implemented during an ISS mission, agency officials said Thursday. Under the program, the returning astronauts will seal themselves inside the capsule, undock from the ISS, perform a controlled departure and reenter Earth's atmosphere for a parachute-assisted splashdown in the Pacific Ocean off the California coast.

NASA's stranded astronaut leaves the ISS for first time in months... but there's a catch

Daily Mail - Science & tech

One of NASA's stranded astronauts has finally left the International Space Station (ISS) after being stuck inside for eight months - but she's not headed home. Sunita Williams had a much-needed change of scenery Thursday during her first spacewalk since arriving on the ISS on June 6. Williams, the station's commander, had to tackle some overdue outdoor repair work alongside NASA's Nick Hague. The pair emerged as the orbiting lab sailed 260 miles above Turkmenistan in Central Asia. The spacewalk is expected to take six and a half hours, concluding at around 1pm ET.

Their tasks include repairing equipment that governs station orientation, patch light filters on the NICER X-ray telescope, and replacing a reflector device on an international docking adapter. Additionally, the pair will check access areas and connector tools that will be used for future maintenance work on the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, a particle physics experiment module mounted on the ISS. Ms Williams will conduct a second spacewalk on 23 January with Mr Wilmore. Together, they will remove a radio frequency group antenna assembly (a collection of components designed to transmit and receive radio waves) and collect surface samples for microorganism analysis. They will also prepare a backup elbow joint for the Canadarm2 robotic arm by positioning the joint in the optimal configuration for a quick replacement if needed.

When science fiction becomes reality! Dune-inspired spacesuit transforms astronauts' urine into drinking water within minutes

Daily Mail - Science & tech

The idea of drinking your own urine might sound like a survival technique promoted by Bear Grylls. But it could soon become a reality for astronauts, thanks to a new Dune-inspired spacesuit. The spacesuit is the brainchild of researchers from Cornell University and features a futuristic device that can recycle urine into drinking water. While the suit is still a prototype, it could be a godsend for astronauts, who are currently forced to relieve themselves inside their spacesuits during long spacewalks. 'The design includes a vacuum-based external catheter leading to a combined forward-reverse osmosis unit, providing a continuous supply of potable water with multiple safety mechanisms to ensure astronaut wellbeing,' said Sofia Etlin, first author of the study.

On this day in history, June 3, 1965, Ed White becomes first American to walk in space: 'Just tremendous'

FOX News

The meeting is expected to help the agency's independent study team determine how to evaluate these mysterious sightings going forward. Astronaut Ed White became the first American to walk in space on this day in history, June 3, 1965. White, an engineer, a Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, a test pilot and NASA astronaut, made the spacewalk -- technically known as "Extravehicular Activity" or "EVA" -- while serving as the pilot on the Gemini 4 mission. Command pilot James McDivitt was the other member of the crew, and took pictures of White outside the vehicle. ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY, JUNE 2, 1953, QUEEN ELIZABETH II IS CROWNED IN LONDON'S WESTMINSTER ABBEY White spent about 20 minutes floating outside the Gemini 4 capsule, nearly double the time initially allowed by NASA for the spacewalk.

NASA astronauts bring more power to International Space Station by installing new roll-out solar array

FOX News

Steve Bowen and Woody Hoburg's venture will add power capacity to the ISS lab. NASA astronauts Woody Hoburg and Steve Bowen on Thursday upgraded the International Space Station's power supply by installing a new roll-out solar array. Hoburg and Bowen, flight engineers on Expedition 69, completed their spacewalk just before 2:30 p.m. EDT, after 5 hours and 35 minutes. Their main objective, per NASA, was to install an ISS Roll-Out Array, or IROSA, to augment power generation for the 1B power channel on the station's starboard truss structure. Arrays are collections of solar panels wired together to capture sunlight and produce power for the space station.

Crew Members Aboard China Space Station Complete 1st Spacewalk

International Business Times

Crew members aboard China's orbiting space station completed their first spacewalk as part of their six-month mission. The seven-hour extra-vehicular activity was completed at 12:16 a.m. Fei Junlong and Zhang Lu, who are members of the Shenzhou-15 mission, completed several tasks like installing extension pumps outside the Mengtian laboratory module during the spacewalk while fellow crew member Deng Qingming supported them from inside the Tiangong space station, according to AP News. Fei and Zhang safely returned to the Wentian lab module following the extravehicular activity, according to China.org.cn. The three crew members are expected to make several such spacewalks while aboard the Tiangong station, which is the second permanently inhabited space outpost after Nasa's International Space Station.

Russian space capsule leak likely due to micrometeorite strike, official says

FOX News

Former NASA astronaut Mike Massimino explains NASA's DART mission and why they intentionally crashed a spacecraft into an asteroid A coolant leak detected from the aft end of the Russian space capsule docked to the International Space Station was likely caused by a micrometeorite strike, according to a Russian space official. Sergei Krikalev, a veteran cosmonaut who serves as the director of crewed space flight programs at Roscosmos, said Thursday that a meteorite striking one of the radiators of the Soyuz MS-22 capsule could have caused the coolant to escape. Krikalev said in a statement that the malfunction could affect the performance of the capsule's coolant system and the temperature in the equipment section of the capsule. Roscosmos and NASA have both said that the incident had not posed any danger to the station's crew. "There have been no other changes in parameters on the Soyuz spacecraft and the station, so there is no threat for the crew," he said.

Chinese astronauts go on spacewalk from new station

Associated Press

Two Chinese astronauts went on a spacewalk Saturday from a new space station that is due to be completed later this year. Cai Xuzhe and Chen Dong's installed pumps, a handle to open the hatch door from outside in an emergency, and a foot-stop to fix an astronaut's feet to a robotic arm, state media said. China is building its own space station after being excluded by the U.S. from the International Space Station because its military runs the country's space program. American officials see a host of strategic challenges from China's space ambitions, in an echo of the U.S.-Soviet rivalry that prompted the race to the moon in the 1960s. The latest spacewalk was the second during a six-month mission that will oversee the completion of the space station.
