Skeleton-based hand gesture recognition plays a crucial role in enabling intuitive human-computer interaction. Traditional methods have primarily relied on hand-crafted features--such as distances between joints or positional changes across frames--to alleviate issues from viewpoint variation or body proportion differences. However, these hand-crafted features often fail to capture the full spatio-temporal information in raw skeleton data, exhibit poor interpretability, and depend heavily on dataset-specific preprocessing, limiting generalization. In addition, normalization strategies in traditional methods, which rely on training data, can introduce domain gaps between training and testing environments, further hindering robustness in diverse real-world settings. To overcome these challenges, we exclude traditional hand-crafted features and propose Skeleton Kinematics Extraction Through Coordinated grapH (SKETCH), a novel framework that directly utilizes raw four-dimensional (time, x, y, and z) skeleton sequences and transforms them into intuitive visual graph representations.

Online hand gesture recognition using Continual Graph Transformers

Online continuous action recognition has emerged as a critical research area due to its practical implications in real-world applications, such as human-computer interaction, healthcare, and robotics. Among various modalities, skeleton-based approaches have gained significant popularity, demonstrating their effectiveness in capturing 3D temporal data while ensuring robustness to environmental variations. However, most existing works focus on segment-based recognition, making them unsuitable for real-time, continuous recognition scenarios. In this paper, we propose a novel online recognition system designed for real-time skeleton sequence streaming. Our approach leverages a hybrid architecture combining Spatial Graph Convolutional Networks (S-GCN) for spatial feature extraction and a Transformer-based Graph Encoder (TGE) for capturing temporal dependencies across frames. Additionally, we introduce a continual learning mechanism to enhance model adaptability to evolving data distributions, ensuring robust recognition in dynamic environments. We evaluate our method on the SHREC'21 benchmark dataset, demonstrating its superior performance in online hand gesture recognition. Our approach not only achieves state-of-the-art accuracy but also significantly reduces false positive rates, making it a compelling solution for real-time applications. The proposed system can be seamlessly integrated into various domains, including human-robot collaboration and assistive technologies, where natural and intuitive interaction is crucial.


FakET: Simulating Cryo-Electron Tomograms with Neural Style Transfer

Particle localization and -classification constitute two of the most fundamental problems in computational microscopy. In recent years, deep learning based approaches have been introduced for these tasks with great success. A key shortcoming of these supervised learning methods is their need for large training data sets, typically generated from particle models in conjunction with complex numerical forward models simulating the physics of transmission electron microscopes. Computer implementations of such forward models are computationally extremely demanding and limit the scope of their applicability. In this paper we propose a method for simulating the forward operator of an electron microscope based on additive noise and Neural Style Transfer techniques. We evaluate the method on localization and classification tasks using one of the established state-of-the-art architectures showing performance on par with the benchmark. In contrast to previous approaches, our method accelerates the data generation process by a factor of 750 while using 33 times less memory and scales well to typical transmission electron microscope detector sizes. It utilizes GPU acceleration and parallel processing. It can be used to adapt a synthetic training data set according to reference data from any transmission electron microscope. Unsupervised Learning of Robust Spectral Shape Matching

We propose a novel learning-based approach for robust 3D shape matching. Our method builds upon deep functional maps and can be trained in a fully unsupervised manner. Previous deep functional map methods mainly focus on predicting optimised functional maps alone, and then rely on off-the-shelf post-processing to obtain accurate point-wise maps during inference. However, this two-stage procedure for obtaining point-wise maps often yields sub-optimal performance. In contrast, building upon recent insights about the relation between functional maps and point-wise maps, we propose a novel unsupervised loss to couple the functional maps and point-wise maps, and thereby directly obtain point-wise maps without any post-processing. Our approach obtains accurate correspondences not only for near-isometric shapes, but also for more challenging non-isometric shapes and partial shapes, as well as shapes with different discretisation or topological noise. Using a total of nine diverse datasets, we extensively evaluate the performance and demonstrate that our method substantially outperforms previous state-of-the-art methods, even compared to recent supervised methods. Self-Supervised Learning for Multimodal Non-Rigid 3D Shape Matching

The matching of 3D shapes has been extensively studied for shapes represented as surface meshes, as well as for shapes represented as point clouds. While point clouds are a common representation of raw real-world 3D data (e.g. from laser scanners), meshes encode rich and expressive topological information, but their creation typically requires some form of (often manual) curation. In turn, methods that purely rely on point clouds are unable to meet the matching quality of mesh-based methods that utilise the additional topological structure. In this work we close this gap by introducing a self-supervised multimodal learning strategy that combines mesh-based functional map regularisation with a contrastive loss that couples mesh and point cloud data. Our shape matching approach allows to obtain intramodal correspondences for triangle meshes, complete point clouds, and partially observed point clouds, as well as correspondences across these data modalities. We demonstrate that our method achieves state-of-the-art results on several challenging benchmark datasets even in comparison to recent supervised methods, and that our method reaches previously unseen cross-dataset generalisation ability.


Sparse-TDA: Sparse Realization of Topological Data Analysis for Multi-Way Classification

Topological data analysis (TDA) has emerged as one of the most promising techniques to reconstruct the unknown shapes of high-dimensional spaces from observed data samples. TDA, thus, yields key shape descriptors in the form of persistent topological features that can be used for any supervised or unsupervised learning task, including multi-way classification. Sparse sampling, on the other hand, provides a highly efficient technique to reconstruct signals in the spatial-temporal domain from just a few carefully-chosen samples. Here, we present a new method, referred to as the Sparse-TDA algorithm, that combines favorable aspects of the two techniques. This combination is realized by selecting an optimal set of sparse pixel samples from the persistent features generated by a vector-based TDA algorithm. These sparse samples are selected from a low-rank matrix representation of persistent features using QR pivoting. We show that the Sparse-TDA method demonstrates promising performance on three benchmark problems related to human posture recognition and image texture classification.
