Robots move in as waste firms struggle to find staff

BBC News

The dust at this busy recycling plant is pervasive and the steady noise of hoppers and conveyor belts makes this a challenging environment to work in. The facility in Rainham, east London is owned by Sharp Group, a family-run skip and waste management firm. Along the conveyor belts runs everything you could imagine, from shoes, to old VHS cassettes and blocks of concrete. The team here processes up to 280,000 tonnes of mixed recycling every year with 24 agency workers on its rapid conveyor belts. This is a hazardous industry.

River of waste 'visible for miles' dumped at mountain beauty spot

BBC News

River of waste'visible for miles' dumped at mountain beauty spot A farmer says she is devastated by a disgusting river of fly-tipped waste dumped down the side of a mountain. Katie Davies, whose family has owned land on Bwlch Mountain in Treorchy for 90 years, said the clean up could cost thousands of pounds and could also harm her sheep which graze on the land. Travel blogger Nathan Dixon, who captured drone footage showing the scale of the discarded waste, said the mess could be seen from three to five miles away, adding that it sticks out like a sore thumb. Rhondda Cynon Taf council said it always took action to hold those responsible for fly-tipping to account, while Natural Resources Wales (NRW) said fly-tipping was a serious crime. Davies, who runs small family business Nantymoel farm which produces Welsh beef and lamb, said the mess keeps me up at night.

Drones are helping to clear up Britain's beaches

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Scientists are recruiting members of the public to help clean up the shores of Great Britain. Plastic waste is scattered across the beaches of the UK and a computer programme is being developed to help spot the litter. The charity campaign needs human volunteers to help train an artificial intelligence algorithm that will automatically spot plastic in pictures taken by drones. Plastic Tide, the charity behind the project, hopes to harness cutting edge drone and algorithm technology to create an open source map of the plastic pollution problem. Peter Kohler, founder and director of The Plastic Tide, said: 'Marine creatures die each year through starvation due to eating plastic that stays in their stomach, making them feel full.

Making a load of rubbish!

Real World Visuals works with a range of specialist companies to complement our in-house creative team. Duncan Fraser (DF) is responsible for CGI (computer-generated imagery) at A Productions who partner on a number of Real World Visuals films. Chris Bates (CB) has been a Director and Cinematographer for a decade and in 2012 founded Skyhook, now a leading drone services provider which works across the UK and abroad. Data, concept and script in hand, Real World Visuals brought the talents of Duncan and Chris to help make piles of rubbish real and engaging. Chris: I thought this was a really interesting task from the start – to shoot the Bristol skyline from above and combine it with CGI material to show clearly how much waste Bristol produces. We do a lot of Industrial surveying and filming for TV, and this project touched on both areas.
