Metaheuristic Enhanced with Feature-Based Guidance and Diversity Management for Solving the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem

We propose a metaheuristic algorithm enhanced with feature-based guidance that is designed to solve the Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem (CVRP). To formulate the proposed guidance, we developed and explained a supervised Machine Learning (ML) model, that is used to formulate the guidance and control the diversity of the solution during the optimization process. We propose a metaheuristic algorithm combining neighborhood search and a novel mechanism of hybrid split and path relinking to implement the proposed guidance. The proposed guidance has proven to give a statistically significant improvement to the proposed metaheuristic algorithm when solving CVRP. Moreover, the proposed guided metaheuristic is also capable of producing competitive solutions among state-of-the-art metaheuristic algorithms.


Creating user stereotypes for persona development from qualitative data through semi-automatic subspace clustering

Personas are models of users that incorporate motivations, wishes, and objectives; These models are employed in user-centred design to help design better user experiences and have recently been employed in adaptive systems to help tailor the personalized user experience. Designing with personas involves the production of descriptions of fictitious users, which are often based on data from real users. The majority of data-driven persona development performed today is based on qualitative data from a limited set of interviewees and transformed into personas using labour-intensive manual techniques. In this study, we propose a method that employs the modelling of user stereotypes to automate part of the persona creation process and addresses the drawbacks of the existing semi-automated methods for persona development. The description of the method is accompanied by an empirical comparison with a manual technique and a semi-automated alternative (multiple correspondence analysis). The results of the comparison show that manual techniques differ between human persona designers leading to different results. The proposed algorithm provides similar results based on parameter input, but was more rigorous and will find optimal clusters, while lowering the labour associated with finding the clusters in the dataset. The output of the method also represents the largest variances in the dataset identified by the multiple correspondence analysis.

Nine years ago a fireworks accident left Dennis Aabo Sørensen so severely wounded, doctors were forced to amputate his left hand. But now, for the first time since the accident, the 36-year-old has been able to experience what the world around him feels like through his missing limb. Scientists have developed a bionic finger that can be connected to the nerves left in his arm, allowing him to experience textures as they really feel. Dennis Aabo Sørensen (pictured) has become the first amputee to trial a new bionic fingertip that has allowed him to feel and distinguish different textures. The technology could lead to new prosthetic arms that can restore the sense of touch to amputees.
