OpenAI's Sora Is Plagued by Sexist, Racist, and Ableist Biases

WIRED

Despite recent leaps forward in image quality, the biases found in videos generated by AI tools, like OpenAI's Sora, are as conspicuous as ever. A WIRED investigation, which included a review of hundreds of AI-generated videos, has found that Sora's model perpetuates sexist, racist, and ableist stereotypes in its results. In Sora's world, everyone is good-looking. Pilots, CEOs, and college professors are men, while flight attendants, receptionists, and childcare workers are women. Disabled people are wheelchair users, interracial relationships are tricky to generate, and fat people don't run.

iPhone voice recognition controversy: 'Racist' converts to 'Trump'

FOX News

Kevin O'Leary joins "The Brian Kilmeade Show" to discuss working with Frank McCourt to buy TikTok and the dangers of DeepSeek. Have you ever stumbled upon a video on social media that made you question the technology you use every day? That's exactly what happened to me recently, and it led me down a rabbit hole of unexpected discoveries about my iPhone's voice-to-text feature. It all began when I came across a TikTok video claiming that when using Apple's voice-to-text feature, saying the word "racist" would initially result in the word "Trump" being typed before quickly correcting itself. Intrigued and somewhat skeptical, I felt compelled to investigate this claim myself.

'Racist' AI scientist blasted for 'fixing' black Ariel in 'The Little Mermaid'

#artificialintelligence

Twitter decided two users could not be part of their world after an artificial intelligence scientist "whitewashed" actress Halle Bailey in "The Little Mermaid" trailer. In addition to suspending their respective accounts, the AI guy has been blased by other users on the site for digitally replacing Bailey -- who is black -- with a fake white actress. The viral tweet circulated days after the new Disney film's trailer reportedly received over 1.5 million dislikes on YouTube from "racist" viewers who are upset that the previously white-skinned, red-headed Ariel is now a black woman. Twitter user @TenGazillioinIQ took that to the next level and "fixed" the clip by using AI to make the live-action fish woman white. "Credits to our member Artificial Intelligence scientist @TenGazillioinIQ," the tweet -- made by another user, @vandalibm, read, according to screenshots taken by DailyMail before the account was suspended.

How to Stop Robots From Becoming Racist

WIRED

In the 1940s, sociologists Kenneth and Mamie Clark placed white and Black dolls in front of young children and asked them to do things like pick the doll that "looks bad" or "is a nice color." The doll test was invented to better understand the evil consequences of separate and unequal treatment on the self-esteem of Black children in the United States. Lawyers from the NAACP used the results to successfully argue in favor of the desegregation of US schools. Now AI researchers say robots may need to undergo similar tests to ensure they treat all people fairly. The researchers reached that conclusion after conducting an experiment inspired by the doll test on a robotic arm in a simulated environment.

The AI That Draws What You Type Is Very Racist, Shocking No One

#artificialintelligence

Some AI experts say that the core of this problem is not a lack of mitigations, but the increasing use of large language models (LLMs), a type of AI template that includes hundreds of billions of parameters, allowing engineers to teach machine learning systems to perform a variety of tasks with relatively little training. AI researchers have criticized large models like GPT-3 for producing horrifying results that reinforce racist and sexist stereotypes, arguing that the massive nature of these models is inherently risky and makes auditing the systems virtually impossible. Before being fired from Google, AI ethicist Timnit Gebru co-authored a paper which warned of the dangers of LLMs, specifically noting their ability to harm marginalized groups.

Can Algorithms be Racist?

#artificialintelligence

As artificial intelligence (A.I.) continues to rapidly integrate within everyday life, there are a few ethical dilemmas that have arisen synchronously and their impact on use cases have become the subject of much debate (Kilbertus et al., 2017; Hardt et al., 2016; Pazzanese, 2020). One such predicament that this paper hinges on has to do with inclusivity and marginalization (Bender et al., 2021). How are notions of participation affected by training data that reinforce hegemonic power in the formation of algorithmic models? Accordingly, this article will seek to spotlight ethical challenges within A.I. via a grounded interpretivist viewpoint gained by qualitatively investigating the literature in order to discuss bias amplifications. As outlined by Bender et al., (2021), there are several juristic and social dilemmas regarding the growth and utilization of language models.

Uber Drivers Say a 'Racist' Algorithm Is Putting Them Out of Work

TIME - Tech

Abiodun Ogunyemi has been an Uber Eats delivery driver since February 2020. But since March he has been unable to work due to what a union supporting drivers claims is a racially-biased algorithm. Ogunyemi, who is Black, had submitted a photograph of himself to confirm his identity on the app, but when the software failed to recognize him, he was blocked from accessing his account for "improper use of the Uber application." Ogunyemi is one of dozens of Uber drivers who have been prevented from working due to what they say is "racist" facial verification technology. Uber uses Microsoft Face API software on its app to verify drivers' identification, asking drivers to submit new photos on a regular basis.

Black Google Researcher Claims She Was Fired Because She Discovered AI Is Racist

#artificialintelligence

A well-known artificial intelligence researcher at Google tweeted Wednesday that she was fired over an email expressing dismay with management over the censorship of new research. Timnit Gebru, a technical co-lead of Google's Ethical A.I. team, who researches algorithmic bias and data mining, has been an outspoken advocate for diversity in technology, claimed, in a series of tweets, she was fired for refusing to retract a research paper that outlines how A.I. discriminates against minorities and also due to a complaint in an email to colleagues. Expressing her frustrations in an email to an internal company group named Google Brain Women and Allies - Gebru criticized Google's hiring of minorities and not doing enough to promote "responsible A.I." The email was shared by Platformer's Casey Newton: I had stopped writing here as you may know, after all the micro and macro aggressions and harassments I received after posting my stories here (and then of course it started being moderated). Recently however, I was contributing to a document that Katherine and Daphne were writing where they were dismayed by the fact that after all this talk, this org seems to have hired 14% or so women this year. Samy has hired 39% from what I understand but he has zero incentive to do this.
