CiteME: Can Language Models Accurately Cite Scientific Claims?
Thousands of new scientific papers are published each month. Such information overload complicates researcher efforts to stay current with the state-of-the-art as well as to verify and correctly attribute claims. We pose the following research question: Given a text excerpt referencing a paper, could an LM act as a research assistant to correctly identify the referenced paper? We advance efforts to answer this question by building a benchmark that evaluates the abilities of LMs in citation attribution. Our benchmark, CiteME, consists of text excerpts from recent machine learning papers, each referencing a single other paper.
Palatable Conceptions of Disembodied Being: Terra Incognita in the Space of Possible Minds
Is it possible to articulate a conception of consciousness that is compatible with the exotic characteristics of contemporary, disembodied AI systems, and that can stand up to philosophical scrutiny? How would subjective time and selfhood show up for an entity that conformed to such a conception? Trying to answer these questions, even metaphorically, stretches the language of consciousness to breaking point. Ultimately, the attempt yields something like emptiness, in the Buddhist sense, and helps to undermine our dualistic inclinations towards subjectivity and selfhood.

A Data-driven Investigation of Euphemistic Language: Comparing the usage of "slave" and "servant" in 19th century US newspapers
This study investigates the usage of "slave" and "servant" in the 19th century US newspapers using computational methods. While both terms were used to refer to enslaved African Americans, they were used in distinct ways. In the Chronicling America corpus, we included possible OCR errors by using FastText embedding and excluded text reprints to consider text reprint culture in the 19th century. Word2vec embedding was used to find semantically close words to "slave" and "servant" and log-odds ratio was calculated to identify over-represented discourse words in the Southern and Northern newspapers. We found that "slave" is associated with socio-economic, legal, and administrative words, however, "servant" is linked to religious words in the Northern newspapers while Southern newspapers associated "servant" with domestic and familial words. We further found that slave discourse words in Southern newspapers are more prevalent in Northern newspapers while servant discourse words from each side are prevalent in their own region. This study contributes to the understanding of how newspapers created different discourses around enslaved African Americans in the 19th century US.

Sensemaking in Novel Environments: How Human Cognition Can Inform Artificial Agents

One of the most vital cognitive skills to possess is the ability to make sense of objects, events, and situations in the world. In the current paper, we offer an approach for creating artificially intelligent agents with the capacity for sensemaking in novel environments. Objectives: to present several key ideas: (1) a novel unified conceptual framework for sensemaking (which includes the existence of sign relations embedded within and across frames); (2) interaction among various content-addressable, distributed-knowledge structures via shared attributes (whose net response would represent a synthesized object, event, or situation serving as a sign for sensemaking in a novel environment). Findings: we suggest that attributes across memories can be shared and recombined in novel ways to create synthesized signs, which can denote certain outcomes in novel environments (i.e., sensemaking).

AI for Just Work: Constructing Diverse Imaginations of AI beyond "Replacing Humans"

The AI community usually focuses on "how" to develop AI techniques, but lacks thorough open discussions on "why" we develop AI. Lacking critical reflections on the general visions and purposes of AI may make the community vulnerable to manipulation. In this position paper, we explore the "why" question of AI. We denote answers to the "why" question the imaginations of AI, which depict our general visions, frames, and mindsets for the prospects of AI. We identify that the prevailing vision in the AI community is largely a monoculture that emphasizes objectives such as replacing humans and improving productivity. Our critical examination of this mainstream imagination highlights its underpinning and potentially unjust assumptions. We then call to diversify our collective imaginations of AI, embedding ethical assumptions from the outset in the imaginations of AI. To facilitate the community's pursuit of diverse imaginations, we demonstrate one process for constructing a new imagination of "AI for just work," and showcase its application in the medical image synthesis task to make it more ethical. We hope this work will help the AI community to open dialogues with civil society on the visions and purposes of AI, and inspire more technical works and advocacy in pursuit of diverse and ethical imaginations to restore the value of AI for the public good.

Dubito Ergo Sum: Exploring AI Ethics

We paraphrase Descartes' famous dictum in the area of AI ethics where the "I doubt and therefore I am" is suggested as a necessary aspect of morality. Therefore AI, which cannot doubt itself, cannot possess moral agency. Of course, this is not the end of the story. We explore various aspects of the human mind that substantially differ from AI, which includes the sensory grounding of our knowing, the act of understanding, and the significance of being able to doubt ourselves. The foundation of our argument is the discipline of ethics, one of the oldest and largest knowledge projects of human history, yet, we seem only to be beginning to get a grasp of it. After a couple of thousand years of studying the ethics of humans, we (humans) arrived at a point where moral psychology suggests that our moral decisions are intuitive, and all the models from ethics become relevant only when we explain ourselves. This recognition has a major impact on what and how we can do regarding AI ethics. We do not offer a solution, we explore some ideas and leave the problem open, but we hope somewhat better understood than before our study.

The Shady Light of Art Automation
Generative artificial intelligence (generative AI) has entered the mainstream culture and become a subject of extensive academic investigation. However, the character and background of its impact on art require subtler scrutiny and more nuanced contextualization. This paper summarizes a broader study of the roles that AI's conceptual and ideological substrata play in influencing art notions. The focus is on divergent but coalescing and often questionable ideas, values, and political views that generative AI and other art-related AI technologies propagate from the computer science and AI/tech industry to the contemporary art and culture. The paper maps the main areas of this complex relationship and concisely critiques their key aspects.

Computational methods for Dynamic Answer Set Programming
In our daily lives and industrial settings, we often encounter dynamic problems that require reasoning over time and metric constraints. These include tasks such as scheduling, routing, and production sequencing. Dynamic logics have traditionally addressed these needs but often lack the flexibility and integration required for comprehensive problem modeling. This research aims to extend Answer Set Programming (ASP), a powerful declarative problem-solving approach, to handle dynamic domains effectively. By integrating concepts from dynamic, temporal, and metric logics into ASP, we seek to develop robust systems capable of modeling complex dynamic problems and performing efficient reasoning tasks, thereby enhancing ASPs applicability in industrial contexts.

Transportability from Multiple Environments with Limited Experiments: Completeness Results
This paper addresses the problem of mz-transportability, that is, transferring causal knowledge collected in several heterogeneous domains to a target domain in which only passive observations and limited experimental data can be collected. The paper first establishes a necessary and sufficient condition for deciding the feasibility of mz-transportability, i.e., whether causal effects in the target domain are estimable from the information available. It further proves that a previously established algorithm for computing transport formula is in fact complete, that is, failure of the algorithm implies non-existence of a transport formula. Finally, the paper shows that the do-calculus is complete for the mz-transportability class.

A Methodology for Studying Linguistic and Cultural Change in China, 1900-1950
This paper presents a quantitative approach to studying linguistic and cultural change in China during the first half of the twentieth century, a period that remains understudied in computational humanities research. The dramatic changes in Chinese language and culture during this time call for greater reflection on the tools and methods used for text analysis. This preliminary study offers a framework for analyzing Chinese texts from the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, demonstrating how established methods such as word counts and word embeddings can provide new historical insights into the complex negotiations between Western modernity and Chinese cultural discourse.
