Towards Network Data Analytics in 5G Systems and Beyond
Romero, Marcos Lima, Suyama, Ricardo
Data has become a critical asset in the digital economy, yet it remains underutilized by Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), unlike Over-the-Top (OTT) players that lead global market valuations. To move beyond the commoditization of connectivity and deliver greater value to customers, data analytics emerges as a strategic enabler. Using data efficiently is essential for unlocking new service opportunities, optimizing operational efficiency, and mitigating operational and business risks. Since Release 15, the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has introduced the Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) to provide powerful insights and predictions using data collected across mobile networks, supporting both user-centric and network-oriented use cases. However, academic research has largely focused on a limited set of methods and use cases, driven by the availability of datasets, restricting broader exploration. This study analyzes trends and gaps in more than 70 articles and proposes two novel use cases to promote the adoption of NWDAF and explore its potential for monetization.

Reliable Vertical Federated Learning in 5G Core Network Architecture
Mestoukirdi, Mohamad, Khanfouci, Mourad
--This work proposes a new algorithm to mitigate model generalization loss in V ertical Federated Learning (VFL) operating under client reliability constraints within 5G Core Networks (CNs). Recently studied and endorsed by 3GPP, VFL enables collaborative and load-balanced model training and inference across the CN. However, the performance of VFL significantly degrades when the Network Data Analytics Functions (NWDAFs) - which serve as primary clients for VFL model training and inference - experience reliability issues stemming from resource constraints and operational overhead. Unlike edge environments, CN environments adopt fundamentally different data management strategies, characterized by more centralized data orchestration capabilities. This presents opportunities to implement better distributed solutions that take full advantage of the CN data handling flexibility. Leveraging this flexibility, we propose a method that optimizes the vertical feature split among clients while centrally defining their local models based on reliability metrics. Our empirical evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm, showing improved performance over traditional baseline methods. In the realm of 5G networks, there is a growing emphasis on integrating machine learning frameworks into daily operations for both edge devices and operators, driven by the proven advantages these frameworks can offer over traditional model-based methods. Among these, Federated Learning (FL) [1] has gained prominence due to its distributed and privacy-preserving framework during both training and inference.

Towards Cognitive Service Delivery on B5G through AIaaS Architecture
Moreira, Larissa F. Rodrigues, Moreira, Rodrigo, Silva, Flávio de Oliveira, Backes, André R.
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is pivotal in advancing mobile network systems by facilitating smart capabilities and automation. The transition from 4G to 5G has substantial implications for AI in consolidating a network predominantly geared towards business verticals. In this context, 3GPP has specified and introduced the Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) entity at the network's core to provide insights based on AI algorithms to benefit network orchestration. This paper proposes a framework for evolving NWDAF that presents the interfaces necessary to further empower the core network with AI capabilities B5G and 6G. In addition, we identify a set of research directions for realizing a distributed e-NWDAF.

Attacks Against Mobility Prediction in 5G Networks
Atiiq, Syafiq Al, Yuan, Yachao, Gehrmann, Christian, Sternby, Jakob, Barriga, Luis
The $5^{th}$ generation of mobile networks introduces a new Network Function (NF) that was not present in previous generations, namely the Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF). Its primary objective is to provide advanced analytics services to various entities within the network and also towards external application services in the 5G ecosystem. One of the key use cases of NWDAF is mobility trajectory prediction, which aims to accurately support efficient mobility management of User Equipment (UE) in the network by allocating ``just in time'' necessary network resources. In this paper, we show that there are potential mobility attacks that can compromise the accuracy of these predictions. In a semi-realistic scenario with 10,000 subscribers, we demonstrate that an adversary equipped with the ability to hijack cellular mobile devices and clone them can significantly reduce the prediction accuracy from 75\% to 40\% using just 100 adversarial UEs. While a defense mechanism largely depends on the attack and the mobility types in a particular area, we prove that a basic KMeans clustering is effective in distinguishing legitimate and adversarial UEs.

Hierarchical Network Data Analytics Framework for B5G Network Automation: Design and Implementation
5G introduced modularized network functions (NFs) to support emerging services in a more flexible and elastic manner. To mitigate the complexity in such modularized NF management, automated network operation and management are indispensable, and thus the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) has introduced a network data analytics function (NWDAF). However, a conventional NWDAF needs to conduct both inference and training tasks, and thus it is difficult to provide the analytics results to NFs in a timely manner for an increased number of analytics requests. In this article, we propose a hierarchical network data analytics framework (H-NDAF) where inference tasks are distributed to multiple leaf NWDAFs and training tasks are conducted at the root NWDAF. Extensive simulation results using open-source software (i.e., free5GC) demonstrate that H-NDAF can provide sufficiently accurate analytics and faster analytics provision time compared to the conventional NWDAF.

An NWDAF Approach to 5G Core Network Signaling Traffic: Analysis and Characterization
Manias, Dimitrios Michael, Chouman, Ali, Shami, Abdallah
Data-driven approaches and paradigms have become promising solutions to efficient network performances through optimization. These approaches focus on state-of-the-art machine learning techniques that can address the needs of 5G networks and the networks of tomorrow, such as proactive load balancing. In contrast to model-based approaches, data-driven approaches do not need accurate models to tackle the target problem, and their associated architectures provide a flexibility of available system parameters that improve the feasibility of learning-based algorithms in mobile wireless networks. The work presented in this paper focuses on demonstrating a working system prototype of the 5G Core (5GC) network and the Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) used to bring the benefits of data-driven techniques to fruition. Analyses of the network-generated data explore core intra-network interactions through unsupervised learning, clustering, and evaluate these results as insights for future opportunities and works.

3GPP Preps Machine Learning in 5G Core Light Reading
Zero Touch & Carrier Automation Congress -- The 3GPP standards group is developing a machine learning function that could allow 5G operators to monitor the status of a network slice or third-party application performance. The network data analytics function (NWDAF) forms a part of the 3GPP's 5G standardization efforts and could become a central point for analytics in the 5G core network, said Serge Manning, a senior technology strategist at Sprint Corp. (NYSE: S). Speaking here in Madrid, Manning said the NWDAF was still in the "early stages" of standardization but could become "an interesting place for innovation." The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) froze the specifications for a 5G new radio standard at the end of 2017 and is due to freeze another set of 5G specifications, covering some of the core network and non-radio features, in June this year as part of its "Release 15" update. Manning says that Release 15 considers the network slice selection function (NSSF) and the policy control function (PCF) as potential "consumers" of the NWDAF.
