CES 2026 proved the PC industry is hosed this year
And expect higher prices for just about everything that uses RAM. An AMD executive predicts that PC builders will likely make piecemeal upgrades this year, instead of building entirely new systems. And new AI supercomputers from NVIDIA and AMD are gobbling up the RAM market. At CES 2026, it was hard not to notice the dire year ahead for the computing industry, one that will likely lead to higher prices and more limited availability for consumer goods across the board. Really, though, the show just confirmed what was apparent since RAM prices skyrocketed over the last few months, driven by demand from AI datacenters.

Travis Kelce shouts out Pat McAfee after nixing 'falsely claimed' report with 'AI stuff'
Fox News Flash top sports headlines are here. Check out what's clicking on Foxnews.com. Pat McAfee initially praised Travis Kelce for making a 3.3 million donation for the homeless, but the tight end admitted that the report was not true. The Daily Mail recently issued that report, which led to McAfee telling his audience on his show last week that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end was "making the world a better place." But on his own podcast, Kelce said the report was not true. "I got to make a little statement in the'don't believe everything you read, kids' category realm that you see online," Kelce began.
McAfee's AI deepfake detector will tell you if that video's a fake
Software developers of all stripes are looking to take advantage of the new AI capabilities of the hardware NPUs found in Copilot PCs. McAfee thinks it has one: a deepfake detector. The McAfee Deepfake Detector sounds like a potentially handy tool for fighting disinformation, if it works as advertised: It lurks in the background of your PC, quietly eyeing any video that you see. If it's AI-generated, the McAfee service will issue an identifying warning. It's not part of McAfee's generally-available antimalware solution, McAfee Total Protection -- at least not yet.
McAfee Ultimate review: Comprehensive security that needs more polish
McAfee Ultimate offers strong antivirus protection and a vast array of online protections, but its apps, services, and tools could use more polish. Its scans also can tangibly decrease performance on mid-range and budget PCs. As attractive as this comprehensive all-in-one package is, it's currently a hard sell. Among the top-tier antivirus software plans, McAfee's version is an especially loaded offering--and less common in how it bundles together an extraordinary number of online protections. Many rivals have a premium antivirus suite, then offer services like a VPN, password manager, and identity protection and recovery as separate subscriptions. This simplifies how much you have to think about, of course, but there's just one problem--this security suite lacks the polish you'd expect of such a premium product. Antivirus, link screening, and firewall protection are just the start.

The Full Nerd: AMD execs dive deep into AI-infused PCs, Threadripper 7000
Next year will likely be the first year of the AI PC, and chipmakers are racing to be the ones powering it. This week, AMD launched its Ryzen 8040 series of mobile CPUs alongside new Instinct hardware for the datacenter. AMD explained it all in a special episode of The Full Nerd podcast. First up: Jason Banta, AMD's client CPU chief, who spoke to Adam Patrick Murray and myself about the Ryzen 8000 series of mobile chips and how they'll enable local chatbot and AI-powered features. Pay attention to the release of the Ryzen AI Software, which "quantizes" a ChatGPT-esque large language model AI into a format that can be used on a Ryzen CPU.
Why AMD thinks Ryzen AI will be just as vital as CPUs and GPUs
A top AMD executive says that the company is thinking about deeper integration of AI across the Ryzen product line, but one ingredient is missing: client applications and operating systems that actually take advantage of them. AMD launched the Ryzen 7000 series in January, which includes the Ryzen 7040HS. In early May, AMD announced the Ryzen 7040U, a lower-power version of the 7040HS. Both are the first chips to include Ryzen AI "XDNA" hardware, among the first occurrences of AI logic for PCs. So far, however, AI remains a service that (aside from Stable Diffusion and some others) exclusively runs in the cloud.
AI is fuelling a rise in online voice scams, study warns
AI technology is fuelling an explosion in voice cloning scams, experts have warned. Fraudsters can now mimic a victim's voice using just a three second snippet of audio, often stolen from social media profiles. It is then used to phone a friend or family member convincing them they are in trouble and urgently need money. One in four Britons say they or someone they know has been targeted by the scam, according to cybersecurity specialists McAfee. It is so believable the majority of those affected admitted they have lost money as a result, with the cost for around a third of victims over £1,000.

McAfee 2023 Threat Predictions
McAfee reports that artificial intelligence-generated videos and images have been used more often in 2022 than in previous years to conduct fraud, as more applications offer the tool to users who don't have any prior knowledge of AI. Also, victims might not know AI technology is now widely available and can be used against them in different scam schemes. In addition to fraudulent use of video AI, AI used for fake voice has also risen, often used in vishing fraud to make phone calls seem more realistic and without leaking the fraudster's real voice. All of the progress made in AI-generated content also provides benefits to cyber criminals interested in running influence campaigns to manipulate public opinion via fake videos.
